After three brutal combat tours in Vietnam I went out on the road looking for the boy that got lost somewhere back there. Aqualung was released. The sound wrapped around me and somehow kept me safe. I disagree. Image was big a deal then too. Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust came just the year after. Glam was just getting started. T Rex? Rolling Stones? And have you seen Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin from then? These guys got away with looking like schlubby forest sprites in spite of it all because they killed. Perhaps if a band of equal awesomeness was around now they’d have to clean up a bit. But different era, and yeah, there definitely was more great music then as shown by the short list I tossed out. But there was plenty of crap sold on image, it’s just been forgotten the half century since this came out.

Let's not kid ourselves. Sure, back then they didn't have Autotune, but they did still had analogue means to make their instruments and voice sound better. Live recordings from that era used plenty of studio trickery to make them sound better. Also, if Tull had had Autotune back then, they would have used it, for sure. Ian Anderson was always experimenting with studio equipment and of course would have used it given the opportunity. Using modern equipment or computers doesn't make the music less real. They're just tools. What is done with them is what matters.

I totally agree. I was in a band that toured with them back in 1975. I would sit backstage every night and watch their show. Different perspective than when I got comped tickets and sat out front where you could see all the lighting and special effects! My biggest "almost" was getting asked to play with them when Barrie (the drummer) was going to leave. He changed his mind and I got a circus magazine write up mentioning that a few months later. It is on my website www.jimllewellyn.com if you're interested.

This song is a lyrical masterpiece. The old guy is just living out his last days. Despised by society for being downtrodden. His time in the park is harmless. Remembers better days of what was and is now gone. Misunderstood. Getting free meals at the Salvation Army. New day. Rinse and repeat.

I believe that was the first Jethro Tull live video I've watched where he didn't have a flute in his hands. I sort of got the full Maniacal Minstrel effect and it was joy to watch.

My first concert was Jethro Tull in 1970 at the now destroyed Houston Coliseum and the backup band was some unheard group called YES. The rest is history.

To all the teenagers out there, this is what rock music talent is all about! Jethro Tull had the most unique sound, way ahead of their time. Nowadays the music is shit!
