Can I find Halal food easily in Albania?
Is Albania a Muslim country?
Many of our subscribers are from Malaysia and Pakistan, both predominantly Muslim. So we have been getting such questions since we arrived in Albania. If you search for Albania on Google, you will see that the main religion is Islam (60% of population). So many assumed that it would be easy to find Halal food. But many are also confused with so many locals offering us raki, a local alcoholic drink everywhere we go as a sign of their hospitality. Why are many people drinking alcohol even if they are Muslim? How about Halal food? Is it hard to find? Check out our vlog!

I was in Korça recently and these are the options a friend of mine mentioned for restaurants that offer halal meat: •Restaurant Sahati •Bujtina Sidheri •Vila Cofiel •Secret restaurant pizza bar •Restauntan frogs Zhabkat- she said the chicken is halal, but apparently they also offer pork🙄 so make sure to ask beforehand •Bar restaurant Manat- in Boboshtice, it's a touristic village near Korça For every city you visit in Albania you have to ask the Muslims living there for recommendations, because most of the restaurants don't mention that they offer halal food.

I have to correct you about Albania declaring to be the first secular country in 1992. That's not the case. The truth is that Albania was the first atheist country by law in 1967. Halal is not merely applied to "Way of Slaughtering the animal" This term also applied to *Muslims* Human intentions for example Halal Earnings: Gained or earned without cheating or stealing. The four areas of cheese and diary products which derive the most questioning are: 1) Enzymes 2) Rennet 3) Whey 4) Rind Choose Cheese with vegetarian rennet and microbial enzymes so you are not choosing anything any type of non-halal animal products, next make sure the Rind doesn't have any lard. wine, beer or other type of alcohol wiped on or bathed in it. @@AlexSDU If you look on Google Maps and search for "halal" several restaurants will actually come up. Most are Indian cuisine (not sure I especially want to eat there, why go to Japan to eat Indian cuisine - I find plenty of that here, unless it's with Japanese friends.. 😁 ) but there are some which are more interesting. There's a couple of Cocoichibanya outlets in Tokyo (they're the famous Curry Rice chain) that are halal (the signage is green rather than the usual orange). Also I've been told if you order the vegetarian option at the ordinary Cocoichibanya restaurants, the food is cooked separately, with separate vessels and utensils, and served with different plates and eating utensils (apparently some vegetarians are as strict about this as many muslims are). There are also halal ramen shops (including one that serves the tiny bowls that you have to eat 30 or 40 of). There are also a lot of doner kebab stalls, most of these seem to be muslim owned and halal. But otherwise I suppose it's a matter of eating fish and vegetarian food. I'm looking forward to eating nama shirasu (raw whitebait) in Kamakura and buying ikura (raw salmon roe) and uni (sea urchin roe) in supermarkets. I suppose one doesn't visit Japan MAINLY to eat halal food - as I tell people, if you want halal Japanese food (and authentic halal Japanese food to boot), come to KL - there's plenty here 😁 .

I would stay away from most convenience store prepared foods and sandwiches. The fish and vegetarian types of onigiri should be OK, as would be the boiled eggs (also the case in Thailand.. As an Albanian myself (from Kosovo born and raised in CH) I noticed that many dishes - although it's the same name and looks the same as in Kosovo - are not halal and even prepared with pork. It's easier to find halal in Switzerland than in Tirana. Sometimes they fry with pork fat or use wine. In Kosovo it's not the case and as long as you eat local (not imported) in most cases it's halal although they don't put the sign "halal" since it's the norm. Although imported meat can be halal depending on the country of origine and certification. There are also some predominantly christian towns in Kosovo but that's no problem since we have huge respect for one another and they get out of their way to make you have something you can eat (e.g. fish or seafood). As for travellers I have the following advice: It's always a good idea to look for stores and restaurants around the mosques. Usually there are numerous halal butchers who know where their meat comes from and they check how it's prepared and certify it. They're controlled by the mosque authorities.

I didn't eat much in Albania because of Halal restrictions as I wasn't able to find many easily accessible places. When I asked local Albanians they weren't very helpful either and quite rude. Another great vlog today! Used to travel to Europe before and it's not easy to find Halal restaurants especially in Germany (except London with great choice of Halal eateries). Even Turkish restaurants offer non Halal meat. So one of my solution was to eat at Indian restaurant as there are options for vegetarian meals and fish/seafood (can skip chicken and of course there's no beef served). Plus I can get rice & curry, and feel at home. Additionally, I can have omelette as side dish. Alcoholic beverages served in the restaurants is not really a main concern since we are travelling away from home with limited choice of food outlets. As long as we don't consume alcohol, it's not really a big problem. Nice new hair Ivana!

In the Netherlands I was surprised at how common halal food was. The first time I went into a grocery store I found, hanging on the rack, halal lunch meat. Muslim immigrants (from Turkey and North Africa) seem to dominate the fast food sector - they run a lot of food stalls and restaurants, and butcher shops (a lot of non-muslims actually buy halal meat as a result). There was even a bakery I found. If you go to immigrant neighborhoods (e.g. the area around the Dappermarkt) prices were about half what they were at other places. The major supermarkets - notably Albert Heijn - have a small halal meat section, and they also sell hummus and babaghanouj (which I ate a lot). I imagine it's pretty similar in Germany - pretty much all the döner kebab shops I've seen on KZfaq (check Andong's channel) have "halal" signs.

Though I must say, it's mostly not halal (especially the "satebabi" - I saw ads for "satebabi" flavored potato chips on TV once). I'll have to say it's funny to see stuff spelled with the old Dutch spelling - it took me a few seconds to figure out what "Tjap tjai" was. And "Bami" in Holland is "Bakmi" in Indonesia. I actually did find a halal Indonesian food restaurant near where I lived, but it was relatively expensive so I only ate there once. I brought a bunch of Malaysian food packets with me (mainly those ready-to-cook spice pouches - asam pedas, curry, fried rice), I ended up giving a lot of it away. There was stuff I really liked from Dutch supermarkets, especially the little rectangular cans of sardines, which were cheap if you bought the generic branded version. They're really expensive here. I also miss access to cheap sparkling water (in Holland, it's the same price as regular bottled water).

Lots of options for travellers when halal restaurants are hard to find. All seafood is halal, so we can eat as much tuna sandwiches, grilled fish, seafood pasta, fish and chips etc as we want. All vegetables are also halal, in addition to fruits. So bread, coffee, strawberries, watermelon, tea, lentils, potatoes etc can be freely consumed. Lastly, dairy and milk products are usually halal unless they have forbidden admixtures such as animal derived substances such as gelatin, fat, rennin, crushed insect colouring etc. So while yogurt and fresh milk is ok, food like cheese and chocolate bars may not be so should be ascertained first before consumption. Lastly, for small animals we can slaughter them ourselves like a chicken. If you have a big family you can also slaughter a large animal yourself like a cow or a goat.

@nata687
@nata687 3 жыл бұрын
Steve, Ivana, I have never commented on any food / travel vlog video channel I watch or subscribe to and this is my first comment. First off, hats off to you for trying to find halal food and help fellow travelers from Muslim regions/countries. Not sure if I saw someone else answer this but apart from vegetarian stuff being halal (sans alcohol), all seafood is also considered halal. So if you find a great seafood restaurant serving traditional Albanian cooking, that would also be great. Lastly, do you plan to visit Kosovo? Kosovo might have much better options on halal food. Kosovo, I believe is ethnic Albanian, but with higher percentage of Muslim population and hopefully more practicing.
@liljanasufaj4130
@liljanasufaj4130 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely Kosova has much more option on Halal food. Albanians of Kosova lived in ex - Yugoslavia without being deprived of religion, but in Albania if you were following any religion you ended up in prison. So, the whole new generations grew up without any knowledge of any religion( not only Muslim one)....... So, the concept of Halal food is new to Albanians of Albania. They know only this: If you don't eat pork or drink alcohol you are allright. I am a Muslim Albanian myself and for the first time in my life I learned Halal food when I came to live in London. Still Albanians of Albania don't know the true meaning of Halal food....

Dear Steve and Ivana, thank you very much for putting up genuine effort to find and understand the concept of halal food to help your viewers/followers find halal food. I am glad you are enjoying Albania because the country has loads to offer. I am Bosnian and practicing muslim and I travelled a lot. I lived in Malaysia for 5 years. I have seen few of your videos. Thank you for sharing good vibes and being open for different and other! If you focus you can easily find halal food in Albania. However, often some muslims make it a big issue and we make it utterly complicated for ourselves but for others to understand as well. Overarching principle for the halal is that the food has to be good and healthy. Halal/allowed is opposite of Haram/forbidden and forbidden are only few things such as: pork and any derivatives from it(lard, gelatin...), blood, dead animals, carnivore animals, insects and reptiles. Any intoxicants (drinks or drugs) are also not halal. Beyond that, everything is halal but to the limits anything that is not healthy i.e. will bring problems to one's body or mind is not allowed/halal. Yes, there is a way to properly dispatch the animal in order to bleed properly and it should not be slaughtered for any other diety but only one God. Utensils you mentioned should only be clean and nothing else. Albania is a lost gem of Europe that is still not spoiled and over-commercialized. People are so lovely and forthcoming so that I really enjoy going back there. A lots fresh produce all over the place and I argue that even the fast food joints in Albania are still very healthy. So, practicing muslims can easily find their way out in Albania. Enjoy Albania! I hope your next destination will be Bosnia. PS If you miss Malaysian food you should check this outlet in Tirana: facebook.com/spicesofmalaysia.al/ Cheers and keep up the good work!

I’m from Uk , Muslim population here is less than 7%. But wherever you go you will easily find halal food places plenty. I think all countries should follow this Trend and make it easier so that those countries will attract lot of travellers from many Muslim countries. As a Muslim I say this with surety first thing when we plan a trip overseas is checking if there is are mosques around and the availability of halal food. If these two has no answer then we will always look for an alternative travel destination. In making halal food widely available in a country like Albania is no brainier for their tourism industry. Take Singapore as an example. It’s not a Muslim country but it says it’s a Muslim friendly country and even prayer facilities around the country are widely available.
