Huh today I learnt what I had was a lateral grip and not a tripod grip. I actually developed the callus mentioned in the video but it's mostly gone away after working at a computer for years and not handwriting a lot. xD I use fountain pens now mainly.

Never knew there was a name for the grip I had. Apparently I have a lateral grip and I rest my pen on the joint of my ring finger (with a permanent callus). My dad tried getting me to use a tripod grip as a kid, but that was a nonstarter 😅.

I have an extremely awkward grip style- I was a lefty as a child until a car accident, so I had to go right handed since I was four or so. I hold my writing utensil with my middle finger and the inside part of my thumb. My ring and pinky basically drag against the paper as I write and draw. It looks very weird, but it's how I have been writing for over 25 years

@@Ink2Screen I just realized the same thing. I was taught the tripod grip but I've always held my pen in the lateral grip style but also very close to the tip of the pen. Unfortunately, I still have a major callus on my middle finger.

I appreciate that is just grip types and no metion of any "correct grip" because the amount of times teachers have scolded me for not writing correctly is stupid, and now I know why some of those pens weren't really a good fit for me and made my hand cramp

Yes same here! Back in elementary school teachers were always saying I was holding my pen or pencil wrong, so I'd try to hold it the "right" way and then they would complain that my writing was messy! Well my writing was very neat before they'd made me change my grip, jeez! 😑 Luckily no one cared how I held my pen once I got past elementary school. Nice to have my grip type shown in this video though 🙂

If you live in vietname then having a tripod grip will be helpful during elementary school. With a tradition of Oriental brush calligraphy, and modern Latin alphabet with dots and small accents for tones, writing neatly is still considered as having good virtues (focus, discipline, perseverance, etc.) In public schools, elementary students first learn to write cursive with pencil, then switch to fountain pens. Student notebooks are periodically collected to check for proper note taking (which is more like copying what the teachers wrote in the write format). Elementary teachers uses fountain pens in red ink to manually write practice writing sheets for students and must write beautiful cursive in chalk on a blackboard.

I have a lateral grip and you were right about the calluses! I have a reasonable sized one on my ring finger and it used to annoy my mum when I held my pen the way I did! I am also a heavy handed writer and draw a lot so that probably didn’t help hahaha! Nice video btw! 🤍🤍🤍

Team lateral grip! 🙌😹 Also, small hands. Didn't think I had a death grip, though the size of the callus on my index / middle finger suggests otherwise. I use a wide variety of fountain pens and tend to switch up my grip slightly for different ones. Love the Zebra Sarasa MarkOn pen for planners.

I had no idea what a “death grip” is but it’s definitely my style - and it’s absolutely not a surprise that Dr Grip has been my favorite pens ever since I tried them like 5 years ago. I switch between gel and normal and don’t really notice a big difference between the two, but they’re both really good. I tend to like the gel because it’s a bit less scratchy, and I like the normal for work where glossy ink is not recommended. I’m also a lefty with a strong overwrite so I will have to try that pilot acroball next!

Shout out to all the people who thought I was weird because I had a lateral grip and not a tripod grip in school lol Edit: I have arthritis in my hands and as a result, I generally use pens with a reinforced tripod shape to them (like a Lamy all star/ safari) or a squishy grip (like a thick uni alpha gel) to try and push myself to have a more comfortable grip, though I grew up with a lateral one and I switch back to it when I'm not concentrating. I generally stick to fountain pens, though I use gel pens like energels/ uni alphagels with a sarasa refill in exams to write more quickly, and only alpha gels or Dr Grips with 2B or softer- I have one refilled with HB for exams, but it's rare now that I'm at university

I have been a lateral grip since childhood, and I happen to have arthritis in my hips and ankles, but not my hands! In fact, even though I'm a professional artist and gamer in my spare time, I never have hand pain. So I'm surprised to hear your story! I feel for you with the arthritis situation, I wish you the best~

Tripod. In German schools using a fountain pen from about grade 3 up is mandatory. I still got a callous, because we were writing so much and I gripped the pen too tight. Today I still use a lot of different fountain pens but also like Energels. Because here fountain pens are mandatory for school kids, they take quite a few measures to train too much pressure etc out of the kids. For example by placing a piece of craft foam under the paper they write on. I know because my daughter would press really hard and get cramps. Personally I think it's a good thing to have kids use fountain pens. Nothing quite compares to that experience

In addition to the factors mentioned in the video, I think a pen's weight is very important. I've had a "death grip" all my life; in addition to the barrel width (as mentioned in the video), a pen's weight really contributes to that. If a pen is too light, I tend to use a very firm grip. If it's too heavy, it becomes tiring to use. For me, the sweet spot is right about 20 grams.I'm glad JetPens lists weights on its website.

I have small hands and a death grip apparently. I recently started using fountain pens after growing up with only cheap ballpoints and I was shocked to find that the bigger barrel fountain pens were actually more comfortable to hold 😯

I'm a professional artist and writer with a lateral grip! They tried to train it out of me in elementary school, but it wasn't possible. Its just my natural style, and I can't imagine my art style having developed how it has without it. ♥ Honestly, I've never been too picky about pens. Thin pens make my "writers callous" more prominent, but large/thick pens are uncomfortable for me too hold. So I tend towards thin gel pens with a bit of grip cushion. ☺

I have a lateral grip and my teachers had always tried to make me change my grip but without it I write wonky and I have developed my art style with it. I use the alpha gel pen with pentel energel refills.

My grip changes as I write. I start with a tripod grip at the start, move into an upright/low hold grip as I move down the page. As a south paw I find it hard to see what I'm writing and crank my neck to the side to get a better view. I'm also a perfectionist and use a death grip. My favorite pens are the Dr. Grip 4+1, the sarasa clip, and my mark on frankinpen with an energel refill. I find smooth ink with a smaller tip size grips the paper and makes clear marks. I also exclusively use Japanese paper, like the kokyo campus paper with the slide binder. It just elevates the experience over all.

I have a tripod grip and always had problems with ball point pens until I bought a Muji. Even the smallest tips glide without any scratichiness or skipping! I also favor the Kawecco for fountain pens, as I grab the pen very close to the tip and while I love Lamys, I always ended up having stained fingers!

Lateral low semi-death grip for me. The Uni Jetstream Alpha Gel is pretty decent but I'm still below the grip portion. I stuck an Energel refill in it to ease up on the death grip tendency and it's pretty much as much of a dream pen as I can get. If only the gel was a TAD lower it would be sheer perfection. But now I know why I like the Sarasa pens so much. I really never noticed the grip portion!

I've got a quad grip, but I live for the pentel energel. It works best for my handwriting style, and I have pretty bad carpal tunnel so I can write longer with them while maintaining more legible handwriting before the claw hand sets in because of the ink. I used to HATE sarasa pens but I use them to write in Korean/Chinese because I like how sharp they make characters look, but I won't use them for writing in English, so I am slowly warming up to them...

I have small hands and a lateral grip, and I've loved using the Pilot airblanc 0.3 mm mechanical pencil for six years now. I use them for almost everything at school and they really work for me, since I've never really liked pens with large grips or wide diameters. I also like the color options and think the design suits my personality. My advice for picking a pen/pencil that works for you, your needs, and your grip is to just try out a few of them and see which ones you keep using and which ones you put down after some time. It's very personal, but you'll find the perfect pen/pencil for you!

I have a death-lateral-low grip 😅 Unfortunately the grip is too high on the uni jet stream alpha gel pens, which means my fingers have a tendency to end up at the border of the plastic nose cone and the grip. As I am not a fan of the Sarasa, my go to is the Uniball Signo rt1 I'm gonna check out the dr grip ball point, as the grip seems to extend pretty far down 🤔 (White body pen 3:09)

I have the same type of grip and hate Dr. Grip because the "cushion" is HARD. I use the Uniball Signo 207 and LOVE it - the grip is amazing and I can actually write for a while without pain. I actually have a couple of them with different tip sizes because it's the only pen I'll use. I use the Pentel Energel ink refills in them.

I looked into it but the grip seems too high for my low grip though :/ I can relax my death grip more than I can control where my fingers should hold the pencil :/ Softness or hardness only matter to me when the pencil/pen grips are metal. I CANNOT use metal pencils like the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette Mechanical Pencil cause the grip hurts my middle finger (lateral grip issue + deathgrip issue) So, a pen like the Dr. probably wouldn't bother me as much so long as it has no metal and the grip is low.

Yeah, I have the same grip! It was so bad when I had to write for 12 hours a day that I not only made a callus on my finger, but also damaged my nail bed. My nail grows flat on that side. 😬

It's so funny because as a left handed person, I have already been using the pilot acroball pen. I find it super comfortable to use and it's my preferred pen when writing. I clicked here because i was curious to see what pen I would be recommended, but now I feel more validated than ever haha [timestamp @ 2:26 ] also, nice to know what type of grip i have. My favorite pen is the Pilot Easy Touch. Runner up is Pilot Dr Grip Center of Gravity. (I use a tripod grip.)

I have a slightly modified tripod grip that I had no idea was unusual. I put my index finger on top, therefore I don’t hold triangular grips properly. And I had no idea that resting your pen on your middle finger was called a lateral grip. I use fountain pens to combat my death grip. I have trouble with applying force in general because my brain has issues locating my body in space. It’s like my hand doesn’t know the pen is there properly unless I grip it tightly, like I can’t control it. Plus arthritis in fingers. 😂 These sorts of videos are so helpful. Hands are such complex things.

If you have a low + quadrupod grip, (besides Zebra Sarasa) I also recommend Uni Ball One, Pilot juice, as well the Muji knock type gel pens! My Zebra Sarasa pen body currently holds a Uni Jetstream ink and I absolutely love this combo! I think as long as the surface of the grip section connecting to the cone is smooth and not too angular, it’ll perfect pen for low + quad 🤗

I never have to write for long so I’ve gravitated to “I like how this pen writes” rather than any “I like how this pen feels”. Right now I’m using an energel for general note taking, a pigma micron for fine stuff and sketches (after years of being a steadtler guy), and a couple of brush pens for practicing kanji (kuretake’s fudegokochi and mannen mouhitsu).

I have a lateral grip and the Alpha gel mechanical pencils are the best, most comfortable ones in my hand ever! I was about to say oh I have a quadropod grip!! But definitely a lateral. I rest the pen on the joint of my ring finger and I have such a noticeable callous. I don’t think it’ll ever go away. I just couldn’t learn to write the way I was taught.

I have a lateral/ low grip with a callous on my ring finger and on the palm side of my thumb right above the joint crease. Not sure if i have death grip - my hands don't get cramps but my callouses get sore after writing a lot. I love the body of the Sarasa and wish I could fit the ink barrel of 0.38 uni-ball signo dx and 0.4 Pilot Hi-tec-c inside it. I've tried 😅 Those specific pens hurt so much to use but I love the ink flow on the first and the needle-tip on the second.

The real death grip is the 85 Euro shipping cost to the EU x_x Especially since I can't really find any similar site that has even has a fraction of the choice you do. I can only guess how much of a pain negotiating shipping prices is, especially if you're not sure how much shipping you will actually end up doing. I for one would order all the things. tbh, I have been known to just make my own adaptive things: thicker barrels or better grips on pens, paintbrushes, crochet hooks, etc. I've also made some of my own braces + splints because those were way expensive for a rural family, but I had pictures, sometimes satellite tv, tape, and cardboard. humans are smart! 85 euros or some domestic air-dry clay around a pen that already pretty much works, to make the barrel easier to hold. also, i've discovered that like many people with 'death grips' part of the issue is poor porprioception. hold the pen tightly because any looser and my brain doesn't know 'how loose,' so my handwriting will be far worse. it takes (ongoing reminders to myself) to try *slightly* loosening my grip. my hand won't ache as much when i'm done. maybe you'll find some kind of techniques that work for you if the death grip style is causing you physical pain. i got most of the help... again, on youtube. >D way cheaper than some physical therapist an hour away!

I usually have a callous on my right middle finger, but I would use all of those pens. I don't care about hand cramps either, I just shake my hand and rub it, then keep writing. I suppose I mostly have tripod writing due to using my thumb, index finger, and middle finger. I can write with the pen between my forefinger and middle finger, though. Plus, I practice with my left hand too. My mom was left handed but never wrote over handed. She always turned her paper to an angle and would write like a right handed person. She had beautiful hand writing, too.

Seems I'm a combo of the tripod and low grip. I guess maybe this is why I loves me some Zebra Sarasa's and feel comfortable with the Pentel EnerGel. Lol, I feel like I've just been algorithmed. Well done JetPens...well done.

Tripod grip and now the mystery to why I dislike ballpoint pens and my Dr. Grip has been solved lol this video is great. Admittedly some grips I see while watching 👀 KZfaq boggle my mind. Not because I feel they're incorrect but because I can't conceive how they can even control the pen to write!! I love how this video honors all grip styles and makes suggestions for pen types 👏

i owned sarasa pen since a year ago and it changed me. it just makes sense but idk why??? now i know i have low grip so that's why writing with it feels so comfortable. i have written more in my journal since having one!

yup can confirm lateral grip gives callus. I’ve had a callus on the lowest joint of my middle finger since… either preschool or early elementary years. Didn’t know what a callus was at the time so I attempted to make it smaller using a nail cutter LMAO I found energel pens quite comfortable for long writing sessions. Sarasa vintages are alright but I have to rest if i’m writing a lot and fast, but regular sarasa are fine though not as “comfy” as energel.

I am a tripod, low gripper and I'm trying to break a long lasting habit of that low grip. It's difficult to stay alerted to avoid bad grip all the time but I'm trying my best 🤗

Lateral, almost death-gripper here, and I swear by Pentel EnerGels since I started using them in 2018. Although I would love to try the Pilot Dr. Grip, it looks ultra-comfy 🤩

As someone with a basic tripod grip, I have to shift to an uncomfortable grip for me to use ballpoints. I prefer using a gel pen, like the Pentel Energel, or a fountain pen.

I do just use any pen! Work has those awful standard bic pens, so I bought a (sorry, JetPens, not from your website) narwhalco wallet pen. It's tiny, it fits in my pocket, it doesn't explode, and it's a ballpoint pen for when I need to use carbon copy papers. At home, I will use pens from JetPens like my pilot energels, my frixion multi-pens, "precise v5"s, and I recently picked up a "disposable" fountain pen I've been meaning to try.

I'm a low grip writer and ironically I just bought the zebra sarasa gel pen so that is perfect! I might have to get more :D I just bought one to try it out but I really like having a lot of control as I write very very small.

Most tripod grips rest the pen on middle finder, but not me. Instead, I grip with the tips of my thumb, index, and middle finger. According to a number of professional artists, especially in Japan, this is a common technique used to provide more flexibility. If mastered correctly, this tripod grip can be handled with a very light touch, even with heavier pens. This technique also allows me to roll my pen while in my hand more easily, which can be very helpful when using pencils. There are other various grip techniques for artists, but those tend to be better for using pencils and brushes.

I have average man-sized hands and I use the classic tripod grip with a high hold (fingers relatively far from the tip/nib), so most pens are comfortable for me, but a few surprised me. The Pilot Vanishing Point/Capless gets a lot of hate, but I find it very comfortable. The indentation on the clip is right where my fingers go and it helps to keep the pen aligned perfectly. The Lamy Safari always looked clumsy and crude to me, but I was surprised at how comfortable and natural that ugly grip feels. Like the Capless, it forces you to hold the pen correctly. But the biggest surprise is that my most comfortable pen is the Pilot Custom Urushi. It's just under the size of a telephone pole, but it's somehow perfectly sized and balanced for me. Unexpectedly, the Custom Urushi is even more comfortable that its "little" brother, the Custom 845 Urushi, and the 845 is no slouch! The ones I don't find comfortable are the thick multi-pens, like the Pilot Feed GP4, the Pilot Dr Grip 4+1, and the Uni Jetstream 4&1. That grip thickness works for a fountain pen because it glides lightly on the page, but with ballpoints and rollerballs, you have to apply pressure and a thick grip puts the fingers at an awkward angle for pressing downward. Very short pens, like the Sailor Pro Gear Slim or the 1911S, are also very unpleasant to me. They force me to post the pen to get a reasonable length and I'm not a fan of posting. One exception to this is the Pilot Prera. It's so light that posting improves the balance instead of throwing it off. Ironically, one pen that I now find uncomfortable because if its ridiculously thin grip is the one that got me started down the fountain pen rabbit hole: the Pilot Metropolitan.

Hi. I like JetPens’ videos, too. I’ve ordered from them a few times and always had a positive purchase. I wanted to mention there is a man who teaches very realistic pencil drawing on a KZfaq channel called “Rix Can Do It.” He also does reviews of different drawing pencils. I don’t draw, but I love writing with soft graphite pencils so his videos are interesting to me. Just FYI.

my grip is a quadropod lateral low grip… i get terrible calluses on my right ring finger’s knuckle, but my grip is still comfy and i cant write any other way 😂😂

suggestion: add grip-to-tipend measurements. that, I think, will be good because I find it a key factor sometimes. (example: I can't write with the graphgear 1000 because the tip end is too far, while the pilot S3, which has the tip end closer to the grip, works for me)

I like a scratchy roller ball or ball point pen. I write heavy handed. It is getting hard to find these kind of pens because the trend is low viscosity ink which feels like I don’t have any control over the pen and paper contact. Basically I’m good with a “dryer” ink almost like a pen that about to run out.

Overwriter with a lateral death grip. xd I recently decided to changed it because I have actually broken pens in the past from how "death-grippy" my death grip is. I am now trying out a "modified tripod grasp", with the pencil between my index and middle fingers (Taylor Swift is known for hers apparently). Super comfortable, but foreign and my handwriting is completely different. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

I have a lateral + quadrupod + low grip 😅 It sucks because I tend to write a bit harder so I grip my pen/pencil harder but there is no grip where I'm holding my pen/pencil, it's just plastic (due to low grip). So after writing for a while it starts to become painful since I have a lateral grip and there is nothing to cushion my finger, only the plastic. However I've found that for me it helps to wear a digital art glove. (A glove that goes over just your pinky and ring fingers.)
