In todays video you will see the Jetta Bigger Turbo| 1999-2005 Jetta K04 Swap MK4 Jetta Build Ep 1.
The 1999-2005 Jetta is a super popular car. Its great for a few reason. The VW mk4 is a 4 door with a turbo and this one I'm working on has a 6 speed manual. It has been lowered and this months I am putting a K04 turbo under the hood. Much like the EVO, IS300, s14, and the Mazda Speed we have a turbo under the hood and it needs to be swapped out for a bigger unit! I watched a few That Dude In Blue Volkswagen reviews and test drives on KZfaq and I'm a fan! For this VW build we have a small walkaround showing what parts I purchased for the car as well as explain the key items needed for the swap. Between exhaust, turbo, intake, ecm, and down pipe. These items are the basic things you need to install your K04.

@@davesworld2132 I hope so too, and I hope they are encouraged to do it on their own (meaning you don't always have to have a shop do it) because as a guy who doesn't have a garage or the accoutrements of a larger location, sometimes I feel that I CANT tackle it in my own. But experience and necessity have proven that you CAN do any of this in your driveway, everything else just makes it easier! Having videos like this that takes some of the mystery out of the selection process clarifies the 'what" so that we can focus on the "how". Sometimes I feel like we only have "X" amount if energy to commit to a project and can't both figure out the optimal solution and how to do it. You clearly make the decision process much more clear on what the focus should be on without simply stating "do this". I personally have let that decision process hinder me from progressing because I don't want to get done and "wish I woulda known" afterwards so I end up in neverending evaluation. Well, as long as the vehicle is still functioning. Sorry for the long post but I guess I felt the need to explain that I'm not just a "fanboy" but rather what I'm getting from the video. But also a fanboy....damnit

@@bigdogchrisl To be honest with you I enjoy responses like this because it shows me that what I’m doing is what I was trying to accomplish. There is a big disconnect between people who want to do things on their own and people who “know” What they are doing because nowadays no one wants to help. I hope at least inspiration comes from the contact I create because we live in a world where being a Person who works with their hands is almost a dying breed

@@davesworld2132 And looked down on! "My time is worth more than that". And ok, while I get that your "real job" or primary job may be more financially viable today, figuring out how things work and actually fixing them AND/while improving them is applicable to almost everything you do! Welding is a great example of something that is fairly straightforward to do but takes YEARS to do well. Doesn't mean you should be afraid to go out and create some ugly welds, remember it takes time, patience and the opportunity for both to get great. Most of the time great isn't necessary, good enough is. Just the simple encouragement and tips is sometimes all thsts needed.

I did a K04 swap on my 2001 Wolfsburg after my K03-S starting leaking oil like the GLI in your video. I'm not sure how far along you are in the process of replacing the turbo but I noticed you didn't mention about upgrading the Turbo Inlet Pipe. Those things make a world of difference!

Hello I have a video goin up today showing the intercooler pipe being removed and then another showing the inlet pipe modification. I called it a snout. Was that the wrong name for it?

Quality video 👍. You’re probably aware of this but the stock rods in the 1.8t can only handle about 300hp... not sure if that’s possible with a highly tuned k04 or not. Look forward to watching this progress.

Hey what’s up. Thank you for commenting I really appreciate that. I think with this upgrade We are under 300 luckily. In the future I would love to get this car back in the shop and do an intercooler and methanol to see what kind of horsepower we can get out of it

It's actually about how much torque the conrods can handle. The torque spike at the low end of revs, will kill the rods.

@@Sanch3Zzz true, just be easy on the torque and let the horsepower ride on the top end. factory tunes on small displacement turbo engines actually do just that in some cases, instead of trying to use so much torque in the beginning (since its small displacement in a four door which would normally be how it is.)

Do you need to buy a manifold, bigger injectors and an intercooler for a k04 swap or can I just buy a 3 inch downpipe and the k04 and have it work?

Hello so far I did not need bigger injectors or a different intake manifold/intercooler. If you watch the whole build series you’ll see what I did along the way it is important however to make sure you have the correct tune in the ECM. But you just need the downpipe and the turbo. Depending on which turbo you by you may or may not need a new elbow to adapt to the OEM intercooler and the OEM intake tube. I also have another video showing how to adapt these things. Also the stock downpipe will work if you get the correct turbo.

You shouldnt need a 4 bar FPR, or new injectors or all that kind of crrap. The turbo will run, but not efficient. The k03 are meant to peak at 3k RPM, and then taper off to redline. The k04 can keep its boost much better so you shouldnt need to taper it. I just highly suggest getting a tune, or even do it yourself.

Yeah seriously, you dont need bigger injectors adjustable fpr for a k04 swap. Its not a big turbo. If you get a tune the tune will learn with upgrades. This is way over kill. swap a k04 and get a tuned ecu. And get the k04 intake. It bolts right up to the stock exhaust too as long as its a k04-001, thats the direct swap for ko3s.Pretty sinple.

Thank you very much I appreciate you watching them. It should work however I would need to see which exhaust manifold you have to confirm this. I do have an exhaust manifold video look at the manifold that I switch out to and see if it matches yours

the K04 in your link is not the same you used. I think the one you used is a rotor master.

Yes it’s held up perfect so far.. By the way this is one of my first videos that I ever shot so the editing wasn’t the best and my camera skills were awful but if you watch the rest of the video series I have a lot better more high-end footage on this build

@@dustinmittel348 All cars always feel like they could use an extra gear lol you could simply just change your gear ratio and your differential and that’ll stretch the transmission gears out. But you can also change the transmission to a six speed if you have the budget

Just watch the guy take one of those motors bone stock high mileage over 220k and with a big turbo a downpipe ID 2000 injectors and a standalone ECU upgrade we're talking bone stock motor 566 horsepower and over 500 foot pounds of torque when we were thinking the connecting rod could snap around 350 torque... And the guy at Co Motorsports ain't Even done tuning it yet crazy numbers for a 1.8T

That was one of my biggest holdups was finding someone who can tune. In my area unless you have a V-8 no one touches the car LOL

Hello. The car has about 100,000 miles on it. I have another video coming out showing how bad the play was inside the K03. Also my apologies my microphone was giving me issues in the beginning when I was filming this video

@@davesworld2132 Cool. I have a Turbo S with the K03s and 131k miles. No oil usage, no external leaks, no smoke. The catch can only really catches crank case condensation and other water from the engine breather system. I'm only going to replace the turbo when it fails. Hopefully mine will last quite a bit.

@@EthanCommins888 nice. Condensation is normal I am going to try and rig up a system where I can pull that condensation into the turbo to burn it off. This will help reduce crank case pressurization. I've had that happen on a few of my supercharged cars.

@@davesworld2132 Delete the Sai pump and all of those emissions components from under the hood to clear up space and remove any vacuum leaks. Urotuning has a kit for that. I run Royal Purple HPS 5W30 with Risoline Nanoprime and have no issues. If the engine has some sludge than I'd check the oil pickup for blockage.

@@EthanCommins888 cool I just started looking into that delete kit. I didn’t notice from the turbo being bad the car was running awful and the spark plugs were coded in a thick black buildup. I have a feeling the oil is going to look just as bad

Debatable. They make about 5 different versions of the K04. If you watch the series you see that by the end of the install this turbo produces over 25psi of peak boost over the factory K03
