THE CLAMP

This video is part one. In it I show how I size up one ring and another down. Both rings are white gold.
I'll be posting the clean up in the next video and also setting a diamond in one of the rings separately.
As usual, if you have questions, please feel free to ask.

The final soldering of the ring connection while temporarily squeezing the two ends together with pliers will result in signficant tensile stress across the soldered joint i.e. after the pliers are removed. This residual tensile stress could lead to the joint cracking apart sometime in the future due to a various factors (e.g. thermal shock, mechanical impact, aging effects, etc). If this were my ring, I would have preferred the two ends of the ring to have been brought together (by plastic deformation) before the soldering effort was performed (i.e. so that the pliers would not be required). This approach would minimize/eliminate tensile stress across the soldered joint, resulting in a more reliable, durable ring.

In the 60s and 70s we never let her ring go out of the shop with tension on it like that it would either snap or be out of round

People don't ever let a jeweler set your ring with tension on it like this it's just a way to make it easy on him and hard inexpensive on you later when it snaps apart
