Presented by Brian K. Goodman, Assistant Professor of English, ASU
ABOUT THIS LECTURE: In 1985, the American novelist Philip Roth received a package in the mail from a Prague-based dissident named Rita Klímová. The package contained the manuscript of her English-language translation of Jiří Weil’s 1949 novel Life with a Star, the most important Czech novel about Jewish life during the Nazi occupation of Prague during the Second World War. In this talk, Goodman reveals the incredible story of how this forgotten classic finally made it into wider circulation at the end of the Cold War era.
ABOUT THIS SERIES: How has the legacy of the Cold War shaped contemporary Jewish literature between the United States, Germany and Israel? Join us as we explore how experiences and memories from the Cold War era continue to impact the dynamic present and future of Jewish writing across multiple languages. This lecture is part 1 of the 3-part series.
