Look at all the recurrences of the number 40 and they always represent: a cleansing and re-emergence to a new level (Jonah and the whale, Noah's ark, Jesus' trip into the desert), what you might call a purification. I think it is clear that you "must be 40" means you go into the study "pure," for the purpose of raising your awareness to a new level of understanding. Am I right? Am I wrong? I don't care. What I do know is that I have personally experienced tremendous growth studying Kaballah and re-reading the red ink in the New Testament especially as well as the stories in the OLD that obviously have a much deeper meaning than a man in the belly of a whale or building an ark for a coming deluge.
