Jewish prayer/amidah standing prayer/with hishtaHawa (prostration)

The amidah (standing prayer), also called shmonei esrei (18, the number of blessings in it) is performed three times a day: arvit/maariv (evening), shaHarith (morning) and minHah (in afternoon).
I am praying here utilizing hishtaHawa/prostration. In more ancient times this was the way to pray for a Jew, as attested to by Rambam in his work Misheh Torah. The rise of Islam, whose prayers are done in this same way, was largely responsible for the discontinuation of this way of praying in Jewish tradition, as distancing the community from identification with the neighbors has been a long standing Jewish tradition stemming from the mitzvah to not learn how the neighbors worship their deities and say, “I will worship God in this way.”
It’s really a shame that the practice became virtually unknown to the Jewish world, being kept alive mostly by tehmanim, Jews from Yemen.
It involves five kneelings with the touching (or near touching) of the head to the ground, and one prostration at the end. This practice helps one to integrate the movement of the body with the intention of the heart and the words of the lips, body/mind/spirit, assisting one in reaching achdut, oneness…or at least pointing in that direction.
May this video be a blessing, and may you find peace in the light of the Infinite.

Muslims , please respect this brother for what he is. I am Muslim and I have much admiration for this brother for his work and devotion. He's attempting to build a bridge of tolerance between all the children of Abraham( pdu). No need to try and convert him to Islam or act as if he's lacking in faith because he's not Muslim. Jews were praying like this way prior to Islam , so show more acknowledgement. It doesn't take anything away from Islam to admit this. Jews and Muslims are two different and distinct nations , yet share many similarities because our God is One and the same. May Hashim/ Allah continue to bless and guide him in truth and righteousness.

Unlike us Jews, Muslims are not a nation but just members of a religion. There is no shortage of Jews attempting to build "bridges" with Muslims. The big deal would be if they could do so with the hostile Muslims, chiefly Arab. Those Jews are naive since there's not much of a chance for that happening with such Muslims. A more realistic Jew, "Middle East American" (Yusuf Eliyah, Andrew Bridges) has become disillusioned from such attempts. Anyway, I don't have problems where Muslims disrespect me underneath my uploads, because, unlike virtually all Jews, I do not allow antisemitism (including anti-Zionism) on my Channel (with one exception) and all comments must be pre-approved by me. The only exception, so far, is a Muslim who filed a *false* copyright claim on my last upload.

I am neither Jewish nor Arab, but I started studying Hebrew and Aramaic for tourist work reasons. Then on my trip to Egypt I had to learn to read Arabic. Both cultures are beautiful. I loved hearing the call to prayer in Türkiye and seeing the devotion of the Muslim people. Both Arab and Jewish nations share the truth about the God of Abraham, many of us Westerners so-called "Christians" forget the origin of the faith and criticize both nations. But God's promise to Hagar, Ishmael's mother, is a truth contained in the Torah. And in the same way God's Promise for Yisack is also a reality. Both nations are a source of blessing. I am a follower of the teachings that bring me closer to the Almighty, Merciful and Gracious God. I try to follow the instructions of the prophets even though I am never allowed to enter a synagogue or a mosque to prostrate myself before the Creator and offer a prayer because I am neither a Jew nor a Muslim. I believe in God but I am not affiliated with any religion.

Many movements and one posture (lying on the abdomen) performed by this guy, in addition to the different language, are foreign to Muslim prayer. This guy integrates the mainstream Rabbinical "Schukling" with Old School Jewish prostration and kneeled prayer. Muslim prayer is much more similar to Qaraite Jewish prayer, posture and movement wise.

@@habibti786 There are plenty of places for you to weep/cry about this, but asking your question here is rude because it's totally unrelated to the subject. The uploader has no influence over the Swedish authorities even if he agrees with you. And very few Muslims would protest publicly if the Torah were burned there. Many Muslims would deride a Jew who raised your sort of question below a video clip of Muslim prayer on this site.

@lightleaker7045
@lightleaker7045 Жыл бұрын
I enjoy the length in prayers, especially the morning and evening prayers which are longer. The time of prayer is an obligation to some, a blessing and gift to all. I do not find it as much as an obligation as a gift from God. It is a time out and a realignment of my beingness. The Hebrew word for “to pray,” as the infinitive, is “l’hitpalel.” This is a reflexive verb meaning, “begging the self.” The way to God is through the center of your being. When you pray you realign your way of being with your beingness, the only beingness that is, the infinite. This is what is meant by the teaching from pirkei avot that says, “do his will as if it is your will, so that he will do your will as if it is his.” This is alignment time, a break in the action of doing which gets us all crossed up, confused, angry, frustrated, and all that. It is a time for re-centering oneself through connection with the infinite beingness which is everything. That said, you should see how long we pray on holidays! 😂

@@ismailaissah “in its many forms” I mean that there are many different ways to serve the infinite. Some find infinity in rhythm of drums, singing out prayers, saying prayers quietly. Serving others with an open heart, which desires nothing in return (even from God), is one of the most common ways to be of service to the almighty. Look into the eyes of another, see the creator. Look into your own eyes, see the creator. Seeing the infinite in all leads directly to compassionate service of the infinite. If I know the infinite projects into this world through this body that I call “me,” and I know that the infinite projects into this world through the one I call, “you,” then I know that there is no “you,” and there is no, “me,” there is only, “we.”
@lightleaker7045
@lightleaker7045 9 ай бұрын
This “we” is made of of “me” and “other me.” We are different in that we have different names, different bodies, different origins in physical life, but we are the same as image bearers of the infinite creator of all. We are the same in essence as infinite energy in the form of ever ascending souls. So when I see my other I see me, the real me, the self, the higher self, also within my other. Sometimes the individual has to be dug through to get deep enough but eventually, if you go deep enough, all are images of the infinite creator. All the same.

The order for prayer is in the Koran and hadith, and how to pray is in the hadith, I have many hadiths about how to pray, from purifying yourself before praying to things that Allah likes after we pray. The Prophet Muhammad bequeathed us 2 books that will set us Muslims on the straight path, namely the Koran as the word of Allah, and the Hadith as the path of the Prophet Muhammad. English - Sahih International And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allah ; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

There are records in the Talmud that discuss how at the Beit Ha Mikdash despite numbers there was always adequate space for prostration. Some groups still do so such as Mizrachiim and Karaites (i believe the latter are Jews regardless of others opinions). Our brother gives an explanation of why many Jews stopped this, because there was a desire to distinguish from Islam which adopted this practice. However this concerns me because the practice in Judaism pre-exists this, so the decision to refrain seems flawed. There is another explanation concerning idolatrous practice and a warning not to hew a stone and then prostrate before it. This one to me is a more acceptable reason. However during Yom Kippur they get around this by putting mats, grass or similar on the floor. So the question is why not at other times. Also shouldnt intent be a consideration, if in your mind i am prostrating before the creator and not because of what is 'before me' then where is the issue?

@@kaycarter1540 I understand. But, my question is when the full flat prostration is done is that when supplication is done or after with palms facing upwards?
@ZviJ1
@ZviJ1 Жыл бұрын
@@kaycarter1540 The main reason for discontinuing prostration among Rabbinical Jews was the introduction of benches and chairs into the synagogues under Christinsane influence in Europe, which was carried further afield beyond Europe by both Sfaradi and Ashkenazi Jews. But to any extent it stemmed from a desire to distinguish Judaism from Islam, it's a disgrace and travesty of the highest order -- to abandon a practice inherent to Judaism from the outset just because some other religion embraced it. However, I doubt this was a factor in discontinuing prostration, seeing as prostration had been prevalent in the Xtian denominations throughout the Near East and yet none of the rabbis discontinued prostration during those centuries. The Rabbinical interpretation of the relevant part in Wayiqra 26:1 is incorrect. What it does state, properly translated, is "a decorated stone you are not to place in your land, to prostrate yourselves to it" (see "The Five Books of Moses" -- Vol. I of the Schoken Bible by Prof. Everett Fox). It follows that there is no transgression in prostrating upon any surface not covered by a mat, rug or carpet. Even if you insist that the relevant part of the verse means, actually, "a decorated stone you are not to place in your land, to prostrate yourselves on it", there's no danger of failing in an `Avairah, because the odds that some Jew would do that are nil.

But yes, Orthodox Christians prostrate in our personal prayers everyday and also in certain times in our churches. It is important to us. We have always done this, and RC came later. And in Greece we also recite the Holy Gospel in the original koine Greek the way it was first written and we recite our prayers in ancient koine Greek too.

There are several explanations for the meaning of the ban. Some people believe that it is forbidden to prostrate in this way because... this is similar to the custom of idolaters (Rambam, Avodah zara 6:6). Other halachic authorities believe that when a person sees someone bowing in this way, he may think that he is serving idols (Chinuch 349). Still others believe that the purpose of the prohibition is to emphasize the difference between prayer in the Temple and our prayer today (Rashi, Megillah 22 b).

Jesus (peace be upon him) Due to his unusual entry and exit from the world, having been born, like Adam, without a father, *The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam: He created him from dust then said to him: “Be” and he was.* (Surā Imran - 59) and having been spared death by being raised to Heaven prior his second coming, *Nay God raised him up unto Himself; and God is Exalted in Power Wise.* (Surā Nisa - 158) And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary confirming the law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light and confirmation of the law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear God.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 46) *If only they had stood fast by the Law the Gospel and all the revelation that was sent to them from their Lord they would have enjoyed happiness from every side. There is from among them a party on the right course; but many of them follow a course that is evil.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 66) *Then will God say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! recount my favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom the Law and the Gospel. And behold! thou makest out of clay as it were the figure of a bird by My leave and thou breathest into it and it becometh a bird by My leave and thou healest those born blind and the lepers by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the Clear Signs and the unbelievers among them said: `This is nothing but evident magic’.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 110) *“Those who follow the apostle the unlettered prophet whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures); in the law and the Gospel; for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil: he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him honour him help him and follow the light which is sent down with him it is they who will prosper.”* (Sūra A’rāf - 157) *God hath purchased of the Believers Their persons and their goods; For theirs (in return) Is the Garden (of Paradise): They fight in His Cause, And slay and are slain: A promise binding on Him In Truth, through the Law, The Gospel, and the Qur-ān: And who is more faithful To his Covenant than God ? Then rejoice in the bargain Which ye have concluded: That is the achievement supreme.* (Sūra Tawba - 111)   *Muhammad is the Apostle Of God ; and those who are With him are strong Against Unbelievers, (but) Compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow And prostrate themselves (In prayer), seeking Grace From God and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their Marks, (being) the traces Of their prostration. This is their similitude In the Taurāt ; And their similitude In the Gospel is : Like a seed which sends Forth its blade, then Makes it strong ; it then Becomes thick, and it stands On its own stem, (filling) The sowers with wonder And delight. As a result, It fills the Unbelievers With rage at them. God has promised those Among them who believe And do righteous deeds Forgiveness, And a great Reward.* (Sūra Fatah - 29) *Then, in their wake, We followed them up With (others of) Our apostles : We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, And bestowed on him The Gospel ; and We ordained In the hearts of those Who followed him Compassion and Mercy. But the Monasticism Which they invented For themselves, We did not Prescribe for them : (We commanded) only The seeking for the Good Pleasure of God ; but that They did not foster As they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those Among them who believed, Their (due) reward, but Many of them are Rebellious transgressors.* (Sūra Hadīd - 27) *The similitude of those Who were charged With the (obligations Of the) Mosaic Law, But who subsequently failed In those (obligations), is That of a donkey Which carries huge tomes (But understands them not). Evil is the similitude Of people who falsify The Signs of God : And God guides not People who do wrong.* (Sūra Jum’ah - 5)

Hello. As Muslims we too have an obligation of staying away from other religions' practices. Considering Jews (and other religions) were prostrating prior to us, this could have led us to not use prostration in the first place but it didn't. It would be like giving up on praying altogether, on praising God, etc. Prostration is likely the highest form of respect and adoration cross-culturally. I believe one should prostrate before God (and only before Him I would argue). For the record, I clicked on the video because I was watching Jewish Matchmaking and a guy was upset that his suitress went to "daven maariv" (had absolutely no idea what this meant) lol. Take care

Read Quran that will make you have a strong relationship with God. previous scripture that was sent by God, Towraah was modified many times so far, Bible was modified many times. But God said he will protect Quran that no one will be able to change anything about it. Since the begin we have only one book Quran. Please do Little research that will make you feel that you got the right path and the purpose of your life.

With respect, and with no intention of starting an argument, what is your proof that the Torah was modified many times? Is this simply because it says so in the Quran or Hadith? In the Torah it tells us not to change even one letter of the Torah. The oldest known copies of the Torah are thousands of years old and at most the deviation is a couple of letters. This predates Quran. If it is only that the Quran and Hadith claim this then where is the righteousness in the claim? Where is the proof? I respect you and your traditions, it shouldn’t be difficult for you to respect ours without trying to hijack it. It’s interesting how many negative comments I’ve gotten on here from Muslims. It doesn’t matter to me how many times they’re written. In thousands of years more Jews have died for not denouncing our faith than there have been Muslim martyrs. Does that make us right and you wrong? Of course not! Either both are right or both are wrong but in either case both live in separate realities which overlap. Shalom salaam.

@@lightleaker7045 okay first of all Take my Salam my brother. The point is God sent us Messenger to every nation we all know. Some of them agreed and others didn't. So people who want to worship one God only, for them God has given his words to us. And we believe in Gods words. As we believe in God's words as a Muslim i believe in All the previous scripture. God knew that we all will commit sin on this earth. Religious books are given to have discipline and peace. As God told previous scripture was also correct for us, but it wasn't preserved the way it should be. That's why while passing the message through people it got changed like Interest is forbidden to take or to give. But it was changed later. Also about women and their rights were not preserved in that book the way it was written. If you look at the Quran it has given the clear information about marriage, women's rights, parents rights, about not taking or giving interest. At the end God has warned us about interest which is a kind of war with God and his Prophet. All these were missing, and humankind was suffering in their life. To have proper guidance from God to mankind, God gave us Quran and God also mentioned that he will protect this book, that no one can ever change. I would request you as you can read books and believe in one God then why not do some research after reading the Holy Quran. Because as we believe in One God, it wouldn't harm us to know more about God. In Quran it is written that God will protect this book and that is the last book from him to mankind. Out of curiosity you can at least read some chapters. You will not regret after knowing the truth and i am not saying anything about your beliefs. God said to worship him Alone and not to do idols worshipping. We don't do that. My request to you Just try to pay little attention to my message and then you do whatever you feel to do. No prob. May God bless us all. Ameen
