On Sept. 22, 2017, Dr. Matthias Henze offered a public lecture at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies to discuss his new book, "Mind the Gap: How the Jewish Writings between the Old and New Testament Help Us Understand Jesus." We are honored to have Dr. Henze as an instructor in our Master of Liberal Studies program! mls.rice.edu

"Do you want to understand Jesus of Nazareth, his apostles, and the rise of early Christianity? Reading the Old Testament is not enough, writes Matthias Henze in this slender volume aimed at the student of the Bible. To understand the Jews of the Second Temple period, it’s essential to read what they wrote-and what Jesus and his followers might have read-beyond the Hebrew scriptures.
Henze introduces the four-century gap between the Old and New Testaments and some of the writings produced during this period (different Old Testaments, the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls); discusses how these texts have been read from the Reformation to the present, emphasizing the importance of the discovery of Qumran; guides the student’s encounter with select texts from each collection; and then introduces key ideas found in specific New Testament texts that simply can’t be understood without these early Jewish “intertestamental” writings-the Messiah, angels and demons, the law, and the resurrection of the dead. Finally, he discusses the role of these writings in the “parting of the ways” between Judaism and Christianity. Mind the Gap broadens curious students’ perspectives on early Judaism and early Christianity and welcomes them to deeper study."

Based on his video, Dr Henze does not believe the book of Daniel was written during Daniel's life. He places the writing in 2nd Century BC. If you are a believer in what Daniel wrote and what Jesus said about Daniel, you will read Dr. Henze with a critical eye. Dr Henze book "Mind the Gap" is still extremely helpful.

If you are a critical reader of Scripture, on the other hand, you will not even blink at that dating. There are very few scholars who still maintain a 6th Century dating, against a wealth of evidence that it is written during and for God's people in the 2nd Century.

Michael, if you pay attention to what "belief" or "faith" really means, then it's never a belief into scholarly theories or texts. "Belief" or "faith" is in God, in the sense of trust in God.

So strange that this guy can say Judaism changed dramatically during the intertestamental period when the priests were still performing services in the Temple and the people were observing the Sabbath. The centuries old pilgramage festivals were still observed. That was a powerful link to the past. The priests continued to offer sacrifices on a daily basis on the same Temple Mount where the First Temple had been built in the 10th bc/bce.

True, but prior to Babylon there were no synagogues or Rabbi's. Demons are in the OT (Tanach) however, not in the detail as the NT. It is an interesting book, I bought the Kindle edition.

I dont agree with the dating of Daniel, Jesus Himself said that Daniel wrote it.

These fake scholars with agendas have ALWAYS rejected Daniel writing the book, because then they have to undeniably admit that the book was prophetic. They force a later writing date to the book of Daniel to claim the events Daniel was prophesying about had already historically took place.

Sorry, Daniel was not written in the 2nd century BCE. That is straight up liberal dating to discredit the precise visions given to Daniel by God. Ironic that the very German scholarship he derides towards the end of the lecture are the same that put the doubt about authorship and date of so many OT books.

Interesting info, but if you go deeper into history .... Hebrew Israelitism, did indeed change to just Judaism, mainly because all the tribes were dispersed and only the Yehudim [Jews] returned from Babylon, [plus a few Benjies and Levis] So no real surprise then that Judaism was the outcome in "the Land of Judah". >Yeshua/Jesus did of course represent all the 12 tribes and even said to his disciples: "Go ye rather to the lost tribes of the House of Israel" presumably because he had already tried persuading the Jews without success. >Jude written 41ad even implored them "to go back to faith once delivered unto the saints", ie the even older 'Hebrew Ancient Israelite' religion, and not what was emerging with the Pharisees, or the emerging Rabbinical Judaism & Pauline Christianity. >What we have in the OT is the 24 books selectively adopted by Judaism 90ad, which are then NOT the full set of Hebrew Scriptures, [also adopted by Rome 325ad, but counted as 39]. Sources confirm in the 2nd temple period there were 94 books [24 public and 70 hidden] > Judaism adopted the 24 and added their Babylonian Talmud [or traditions of the elders]. > Rome took the 24 [called them 39] and added the ITB 14 & NT. > Rome used some of the 70 'hidden' books for their ITB14 and some content for their NT. > Rome used the LXX to explain away the '70 hidden books' [which they had selectively used] also held at Alexandria and Dameshek [Arabic name Khirbet Qumran]. All references available if required, which also explains how the DSS of the Ancient Hebrew religion fit in and why Alexandrian library was destroyed 3x by Rome.

Only Jesus is Worthy as the Christ and as far as demons a women said when Jesus walked the earth when he casted out demons she said that : Even the demons are casted out by his speaking and as far as the Word Rabbi it was used in the old testament which was the covenant of the jews whether they were called synagogues were not in that day. But I will listen on to what this man is saying though we have but one Master above all and one teacher which grounds us all in the Faith for it is the Gift of God the Almighty. The old Covenant is all about the Jesus our Christ and this person is not speaking from the Word of God for Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law and the Prophet's. This fellow is giving his own words and not the Word of God the Truth.

The conquer has always tells his side of Truth and call it History, but is it facts or is it the truth? Let's find out. In Genesis The Laws has been given to a people amongst the peoples of the world to proclaimed the one universal god and his ways he wants man to live. From Adam and way unto Moses, the names of the patriarchy and prophets were a different sounding names until we venture into the new testament and we were given new sounding Greeks names Peter, James and John etc, etc. Most people don't know how to study the scriptures especially in the Jewish congregation, they awaits for the rabbis to lead them. without asking any questions. However, as one reads and studies the scriptures you know that in the book of Isaiah in the OT its speak of a coming Messiah, one liken unto Moses that will teach you all things. One must understand that the Massiah was sent to redeemed his people from their SIN. A lot of people claiming to be pias and spiritual are seeking the benefits of the after life like the Kabbalah, Mydticsm and the Zohar. The ultimate goal is to find out how the universe was created or formed and careless about the creator. The HINDU, BUDDHS and the ZOHAR are all searching for the enlightened one who they think is YAHUWAH
