I can't believe that the sound quality from a 1963 broadcast could be so good!

It was very likely recorded on an Ampex 350 series machine; they were very good indeed. I have tapes recorded on a 351 from around that time, and even today they play back so well on my 440 that they sound current. The ribbon mics commonly used at the time - RCA 77D, for instance - were remarkably good.

I was in 2nd grade when this happened. We were being led out to the school busses as it was shortly after 2:00 PM in Florida when the News arrived. I remember many of the teachers were in tears. I didn't find out what the end result was until I got home on the bus. They had already arrested Oswald.

Yeah, Joe, I've posted it in past years at my previous JFK channels which were terminated by KZfaq (a fate that awaits all YT channels--eventually). And I have this WCCO series on my OTR channel too. But I just noticed yesterday that I had not ever uploaded this series to *this* particular channel.

About 20 minutes in, when recounting presidential assassination attempts, he misses President Garfield. President Garfield was shot, and died several weeks later, about 1880 or so.

Every assassinated u.s. president was elected in year ending in 0. Lincoln was elected in 1860 Garfield in 1880 McKinley in 1900 and Kennedy in 1960. In 1980 when Reagan was elected, people worried and he was nearly murdered by would be assassin. Biden elected in 2020. Hopefully nothing bad happens. I don't like Biden but I don't support the murder of any u.s. president

You know, what is so very sad! If somehow you could go back in time and save President Kennedy from Dealy Plaza, "they" would have killed him somewhere else! Sad!~L P.S. Thank you, David for all your hard work with all the JFK broadcasts!

Today, a radio (or TV) network wouldn't go back to regular programming after the report of a sitting President being shot. Instead, the network would repeat initial details until new details came in.

No. They would tell you how you are supposed to feel and you are supposed to determine if the report is fact or fiction. Meanwhile they would speculate who did it with zero evidence.

Significantly, he omitted the quote attributed to Clint Hill, "He's dead," which was in the wire report, and included in other on-air reports.
@dailyvault

If you listen closely, he pauses when he reaches the point in the report mentioning Clint Hill, and when he does start speaking again, it sounds like he's struggling to keep his composure. Why did he choose not to report it? Perhaps he didn't want to make such a claim without having it confirmed from a reliable source.

It was smart to omit that quote. An agent is certainly not qualified to speak to whether or not someone is dead, and the last thing you want to do is be the guy who said on the radio that the president was dead if he really wasn't.

@@erickchurch5390 Hill was in the limousine for the ride to Parkland. He saw Kennedy's vacant stare and unflinching body. He saw the breadth of the damage to Kennedy's head. He was very qualified to make that call and History shows he was correct.

Filthy McNasty You’ve completely missed my point. The radio announcer knew nothing of Kennedy’s wounds or what Hill saw. All he had was a quote from someone who did not have a medical background stating “He’s dead”.

A new angle from Pierpoint, early on, not included in the CBS television coverage, emphasizing the gravity of the President’s condition. One of the earliest reports quoted wire service reporter James Altgens as saying he saw blood on Kennedy’s head just after the shots were fired. It clearly didn’t look hopeful. Both CBS and NBC were careful to separate ascertained facts from rumors, and official and unofficial information. NBC television tried to put a hopeful slant on things, but I want to emphasize that I do not consider that misleading. As I restudy these terrible events and the many different angles from which they were reported, much was unknown between ca. 12:45 m. and 1:33 p.m. Central time (when Assistant White House Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff made the official announcement of the Preeident’s death) and I think it remarkable that as much cogent information was disseminated as it was during the period of uncertainty over JFK’s condition. In the words of NBC’s Bill Ryan, the whole country was in a state of “controlled panic”. I think Allan Jackson made the announcement on Kennedy’s death before Kilduff’s announcement, on word from Dan Rather -- who had gotten the information from physicians at Parkland Hospital and from the Rev. Oscar Huber, the Catholic priest who had given the church’s sacrament of extreme unction to the President.

Having worked in radio news on 9/11 when a news event of this magnitude breaks I can confirm for everyone working it IS controlled panic. That is an accurate description of what is going on in news rooms around the country.

Associated Press photographer James Altgens, quoted in the second bulletin at 0:59, had the amazing and unbelievable experience of personally witnessing the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941 AND the assassination of President Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963 - two immensely important historic events in the USA and indeed the entire world. He took a photo of JFK just after he'd been shot the first time through his neck / throat, but from a distance. He was always bothered that he'd been too shocked to continue to take photos after this one, as the limousine came closer to him and passed him.

No description of the suspect went out before the arrest of Oswald from Dan Rather in Dallas, Texas. (I suspect these things are edited. I have heard one description of a white man suspect wearing a white shirt and Levis, this was played in a Garrison radio interview from 1988 or so.)

That's how the media told us he was dead -- a rare use of intuitive instead of empirical information. They knew the president was dead but could not report it. So media said it between the lines.

Three shots from somewhere in the crowd. Child said he saw fifth floor shooter. (I always listen for the first description of the shooter.) Automatic fire, right rear, grassy knoll - (THANK YOU DAN RATHER.) Man and woman seen on grassy knoll, perhaps they are? Hiding in the bushes. Secret service surrounding a building, assassins may be holed up on fifth floor.
