That's some great advice and inspiring too. I appreciate that you dish out the honest facts about making independent movies, especially the truths regarding distribution. If you taught a class in film at University for film majors (like I was in the long, long ago) your class would be the best. Unfortunately schools do not educate film students in the realities of filmmaking today and are mostly bogged down in history and theory with some poorly taught production fun to just give a taste. Making movies that make money means it's a business and the movie is the product. This is one of the hardest lessons to put into practice after all the education is complete and you have this degree in your hands. The landscape is tough to navigate. Thanks for the direction.

This is all good insight for folks with indie films. I'm just at the release side of a feature that ran through a sales agent that would only make deals with MGs (in the territory you said) after my previous film being initially self-distributed then finding its way to what could arguably be called a predatory distributor. The new film was also nearly associated with a sales agent who found me, made a very impressive pitch and came from a background with very recognisable names, who finished off a very complimentary and wooing hour long call with the rub; that you paid THEM up front in 3 stages for the pleasure to have them sell you. I don't know if there's an easy way to figure out the good and bad sales agents beyond word of mouth, but given that there is more and more predatory ones popping up day to day and convincing folks with small films that might not be noticed by a more legit distributor, it's something we all need to find a way to identify and help each other avoid.

After watching so many videos on this topic I’ve made the decision to just release on KZfaq after our film festival run. Having control when I release is important to me
@JHorton

to each their own, but you are severally limiting yourself. And.I say this as someone who makes a good livving from distributing my films. When you can still do that and release through a platform like Filmhub. Returns there have little to no effect on youtube revenue. and control is an illusion. KZfaq can pull the plug on you at any time.

4:54 - Movie poster making costs. That got my attention. Do you have a video that talks about this process/costs/deliverables? Great video! Thank you for sharing.

not that I remember. You can find pretty affordable graphic designers on Fivver. Anywhere from 150 up to 1000 dollars. Most distributors will want a 4x3 and 16x9 versions and a layered PSD if they need to make size changes. Places like Filmhub have a whole slew of size requirements. I do a lot of my own graphic design, so it doesn't really figure in to my costs much. Just make sure if you have someone design something for you that they give you the LAYERED not flattened file when done. So if needs be you or someone else can make adjustments down the road.

Do you have advice on affordable Entertainment Lawyers to handle these contracts? Also, if you use SAG actors, how you do handle their residuals? I'm going to be shooting a feature with SAG actors and I'm trying to navigate that part.
@JHorton
@JHorton Жыл бұрын
I don't really give out specific legal advice, it's just too messy. But there’s entertainment attorneys all over: in my experience no such thing as affordable. Good ones charge what they charge. Sometimes you can work out a backend percent for a discount. On my last movie I I gave points and paid a small amount up front but that was for a soup to nuts deal. If you just need someone to pursue a distribution contract you can get it done for well under 1000. Some will do it for a few hundred. Be sure you get references and they have experience with distribution contracts for films. There’s all kinds of entertainment attorneys with different specialties. Every sag show I’ve done has through a distributor. Your lawyer can add an addendum to the contract where the distributor takes it out and pays for you. But not all of them will do that. I have an accountant that does the rest. Sag isn’t very concerned with very small movies. But it’s still a good idea to stay in good standing.

@@JHorton Wow, thanks for all that! Yeah, the SAG thing is shocking these days. It used to me a nightmare with shorts where I would have to pay actors' wages into their accounting firm then they would pay the actors. I used to just pay them on set. But, I recently did a short and SAG totally didn't care, even about the rates. But, with a feature, I just want to make sure it's legally sound. Thanks man, love your videos, super helpful that someone is making realistic videos for most filmmakers in the same boat.

@@ronineditor9920 I have to second what J. said about entertainment lawyers in that you have to be careful, because many lawyers who really aren't familiar with distribution contracts (but are familiar with business contracts) will misrepresent themselves to get your money. As for lawyers who are familiar with them, you can find a good one to review your contract and give advice for a decent fee, but if you want one to negotiate for you then there's no such thing as "affordable".

I have not seen it yet. But I plan to. Regardless of how I feel about it creatively I think it's great whenver a smaller indie film breaks out like that. But also important to remember regardless of quality that kind of success is an outlier and not necessarily a harbinger of a trend of smaller movies making a ton of money.
