I’ve often said that companies don't make things, people do. To understand why Analog Man is great, you need to know that Analog Man is a person. His name is Mike Piera, and he got started in the mid ’80s, around 1985, when he moved to Japan to be a software engineer. While working in Japan, he started seeing vintage guitars and effects pedals that he'd never seen in the States, just a universe of crazy interesting, collectible stuff. He started tinkering around, recreating some of these rare effects, and modifying things for friends.
One thing led to another, Mike started a pedal company, and the rest is history.

Even though I love BOSS pedals, I never cared much for the DS-1 Distortion. However, about 2 months ago, I came across an early 2000's DS-1, (in the box with all the box candy!!), at a yard sale for $25. I was thrilled when I opened the box and it had the Analogman sticker on it! I truly love this pedal! It has waaaaay more mid range to it now. It is a mainstay on my board. Side note: at that very same yard sale, I ended up with a mid-2000's EHX Small Clone, a Digitech Bad Monkey, (better than I thought it would be!), a Line 6 Roto Machine, and finally, the star of the show: a 1982 BOSS CE-2 Chorus in MINT condition, also with the box and candy!!! I gave $115 for everything, (including the $25 for the DS-1). I'll never stumble on a deal like that again...

Mike is a kick-ass dude who makes kick-ass pedals and waiting 17 months for my King of Tone was well worth it. It is not over-priced (unless you find a gouger on ebay/Reverb) and, much like the Klon, it's not Mike who is responsible for the stupid resale pricing. I say, get on the list and then just go about your life until you get your email!

His personality and customer service, overrated (he's no where near as friendly or patient as he's often made out to be. I'm not saying he HAS to be, I'm just saying). His pedals, also overrated. They're not "bad" by any stretch, some are really excellent. Particularly his modded Boss and Maxon pedals and the KOT. I'm just saying they're just overrated, over mythologized. I own and have owned at least 1,000 pedals over the last 25+ years. His fuzzes have nothing on builders like Pigdog, Castledine and D*A*M and certainly aren't as sturdily built. Of the about 50 Analogman pedals (including modded pedals) I've had at least a quarter of them have janky footswitches, shitty solder joints and need to be repaired within a year or two. At times alot of stuff gets built in a pretty slapdash manner because he's backed up on orders. Getting back to his Sun Faces, printed circuit board fuzzes will never sounds as good as point to point hand wired. So and so said different? They're wrong and they likely sell pedals with printed circuit boards. This is not to "slag" Analogman at all even though I probably come off like a prick. His pedals sound really good and his website is a fantastic resource. It's just to say that people need to chill because his "legend" has been blown up like a fun house jumper.

@KC Although to be fair, "anyone" can build a fuzz face, it's the artists who can tune them to the perfect balance of gain, "spit," low noise floor and EQ. Analogman is AIGHT at best.

Thank you for turning me on to the Astro Tone Fuzz. It really does sound more like a Distortion than a Fuzz. It also floors me that the original circuit was created in 1966. "Tyler" has always been my favorite too. In my area of western MA the local "modern rock" radio station started playing "BAckslider" before any of the other singles from that record and my friends and I all fell in love with the band. At the end of my first guitar lesson my teacher told me to come in next time with a song I wanted to learn, so I came in next weekend asking him to teach me "Backslider" and I can still remember him listening to the opening riff one time and then playing it. I was blown away that he could do that and I never forgot that feeling. At that time my mother, who had become a born again Christian a few years before this, was having issues with some of the people at the church we were going to and this song came on in the car one day and me, not knowing what a Backslider was, started turning it up. After it was finished she told me what it meant and that it applied to her etc etc. That whole record had such a tremendous impact on me during that time in my life and it was a nice surprise to see it mentioned here out of the blue like. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Edit: grammer

I love the toadies and rubberneck. Saw them a few years ago and they freaking killed it live. Ended with Tyler. I burn and away we’re also radio hits. Whoever gets that record will love it. I’ve always had a connection with them after seeing in their one video that the singer had a Gibson “the Paul”, just like me. It was the only Gibson I could afford as a young lad. Great guitar, great band and seriously great company with Analogman. You’re not too bad either Josh and JHS fam.

Possum Kindom is one of those albums that for me really go me into alternative rock. It also got me to really listen to songs and learn how to play all the parts. When I met them like 6ish years ago after seeing them on their 20th anniversary tour. I was amazed at how down to earth they are.

I have the Black variant of the Astro Tone. Love it. Also, Toadies was my first rock concert, they opened for White Zombie. Loved it. Love your show. Love Ananlogman.

I have to agree with you on the Astrotone, It's such a great pedal, works well for OD, Distortion, and Fuzz!

Love the toadies!!! Been fortunate to see them many times live. The best was at stubb's outdoors in the ATX. They played rubberneck front to back to open the show, not a word said. Then they went through their current live set. Killer live band still!!!

Thank you for hooking up a DS-1 to a (sort of) Small Clone. That's easily my favorite guitar sound of all time. Everyone needs to own a Small Clone. It's special.

Rubberneck was one of my first CDs as a wee lad, and completely agree about “Tyler” being a great, yet creepy tune. “I Burn” is one of my favorites too. Thanks for the reminder to give it an overdue listen!

I've been drooling over Analogman's pedals for a long time especially one of his Sunface NKTs but then I was introduced to Jesse Davies and ended up buying a King Tone Vintage Fuzz and I absolutely love it!! Plus having both NKT275 and AC128 gives you two fuzz pedals in one. And yes they are two different animals imo. All that being said I'm still chasing a couple Analogman Pedals
