Dude, how smart is JOSH? He has leveraged Patreon to cover his marketing budget. Brilliant use of emerging tech/social media. It's like Walmart paying their employees just little enough so the employees can collect a meager paycheck from Walmart, and still collect government entitlement money. Walmart made their money by splitting their payroll costs with US taxpayers, crushing its competitors both large and small who foolishly paid their employees wages that could keep them in a home, with food, energy and transportation. It's kinda like the giant corporation of Walmart is part of the US government, or maybe even better stated, the US government is a part of the giant Walmart corporation, comrade. Genius business exploit. Kinda makes sense why armed men with guns (police) are shutting down small businesses all over the country, but there is NO thought that Walmart would be closed down for the duration of this profoundly deadly plague, the likes of which hasn't been seen on this planet since the black death in Europe took fully 2/3rds of the population... and our modern plague appears that it will not leave us for years, maybe decades, just like the endless war on terror we're still fighting (even if we don't personally, or publicly think about it anymore). Most people start businesses and focus all of their time and energy on making a great product or service, and they often achieve that, and then fail as a business. But the geniuses who find success make a good enough product, but spend their time and energy to find some way(s) to externalize (a) major costs, whether that be Dow figuring out how they can freely dump toxic waste into drinking water, waste that would cost substantial amounts, maybe even prohibitive amounts of money to dispose of in a way that didn't cause cancer/death and profound birth defects in large populations for many generations to come, more generations than since the founding of this nation to the present. Or, like say, an energy company that can dump waste gases into the atmosphere, using our limited breathable air as a free and endless waste disposal system, or in this cases, JHS externalizing their marketing costs by using social media/Patreon to cover/externalize the cost. Two pedal companies being equal, the company who can 1. Market better, and 2. Externalize major costs, is going to CRUSH the other company. It's not about the product, its about the business. Genius. Don't think I'm neg'ing out on JHS/JOSH, I'm not, kudos to them/him finding and successfully using this market exploit. And I, personally, simply really enjoy these videos, I'll never be able to afford his products, yeah, even that new budget line (unless I can get them used in 30 years for half the price), so I'm not watching as a consumer, I just enjoy the videos, Josh has a way, a way that is so, so close to a 90's big headed jiffy pop nightmare, without that giant melon actually exploding, and the videos are well done, well lit, and within that, I like the bright lighting, I like the present, focused, productive look created by the, flat, bright, but ungrateing/unglaring lighting, great sound (and getting better, less boxy room noise now, nice work), great shots, the "set" is perfect, great balance of snarky self deprecating humor that does nothing to cover the enormity of Josh's ego, and information, and I dig the demonstration jams, or just demo riffs, although this vid is weak on the riff, come on Josh! And more important than that, I always learn something watching these JHS videos, I often watch them again, a year or so later, as my knowledge and understanding expands, I can glean more from the videos, more than I was able to perceive on the first watch, so, I think this is a pretty strong indication of (my ignorance, but) these video's useful informational content. And more often than not, I learn many somethings per each vid, something I'm very appreciative of. I literally took notes on this, my second watching of this video, so I can investigate these circuit topologies in my extreme budget price zone, like used, very low market, patiently sniped Soul Food, Green Mile, and Ultimate Drive.

I'm setting up an upstairs mini-rig with an old, barely working Yamaha 80's solid state bass amp that I bought from a local thrift store when they reopened the first day after shutting their doors due to covid, so I actually found a deal because most people were still hiding behind their front doors (have had covid twice now, power to the people!). I bought this amp for another (acoustic, but playing electric for the first time, no electric guitar, no amp) guitarist who was playing with us for a while (until... baby on the way, bye bye, dude!). But I'll repurpose this crappy amp to use for an upstairs guitar mini-rig at my bedside for those (most) days when I can't get downstairs, days that have recently turned to weeks, and now actually months without playing or writing music, as our household's infrastructure and transportation crumbles from age and overuse with little or no maintenance due to a lack of money, time, knowledge and ability, everything demanding, stealing my attention from doing what I need to get done with the time I have left. But these extended music droughts have been causing my mind, and morale to quickly turn bad, like unrefrigerated, increasingly feted, raw fish; to the point where I'm not playing music and still going whole days getting nothing useful done anyway, as my overwhelming need to make and play music confounds my intention to respond to the necessity of our family's material dissipation. This wicked process is exacerbated by the looming omnipresence of my diminishing days, as functionality departs my brain and body, as they are disassembled by a confluence of limited and therefore damaged Norther European Islander genes, bioweapons loosed, intentionally... unintentionally, it doesn't matter, the liability being so grand in scale, making the disease undiagnoseable by those sworn to Apollyon whose extremely lucrative monopoly is established, protected and enforced by those who created and loosed the weapons in the first place. So, as I, and we, come apart, simple, and only partially known scales (I'm not a native guitar player, never had the fingers for it, bass was my instrument in the live/guitar based music world) become increasingly unrecallable, and the lines I write in them even more distant, in the moment as I receive them, and over the days, especially now most days, when I do not revisit them. My weak grasp on everything I've committed my life to is slipping away, and I know my time is now short. So, I'm really profoundly hoping a mini-dose on the mini-rig on a daily basis can cool my raw fish in those small moments I'm afforded by decay, like the moment between putting my socks on and finding which door I left my crap clodded shoes behind. So, I have to make some decisions as to what to bring up, and what to leave downstairs on my proper rig, and this is complicated by my now more often use of overdrive/distortion pedals on synth/drum machine, so have to be really cagey about what I allocate to where. But I want to try these topologies first, isolated on my actual amp/cab to understand their differences in my context, but then also to really figure out how their differences interact with other cornerstone pedals, like my most expensive and decadent pedal, the used Swollen Pickle I managed to pick up at a bottom of the market price. How do these topologies affect the extremely complex, interactive, and extensible Swollen Pickle (which is so underrated, I swear, most people seem to buy it, plug in, adjust a knob or two, and don't immediately get the sound they want, then post negative opinions about the pedal online... I can go from light overdrive breakup to hellish broken velcro with the Swollen Pickle's 7 interactive knobs [on a fuzz pedal, yo, thank you George, the diametric opposite of EQD's discrete, one knob fuzz]. I wish Josh would *always* include a budget pedal when he discusses a variety of pedals in some category, that would help a lot of people... or maybe it wouldn't, as those actually affordable pedals instantly jump in price from a mere mention by Josh, or become unavailable entirely. Maybe he is too big now to help us littles, his benevolence may only do harm now? Tricky situation this freely available information age. I'm not a fan of Brian's channel, no offense, I find his videos painful to watch. That may be because Josh has way more of a team in place to produce these vids, so they're way easier on the eyes/ears/subconscious, whereas Brian seems like he's raw dawgin it, just himself in his space, with shorts, white socks and black sneakers, throwing up some lights and a camera tripod wherever and whenever he has the time, and kind of wings his way through the vids... most viewers don't know, it takes a concerted, and large, at that, effort to produce a simple, well flowing, watchable 10 minute video for You Tube, let alone producing a channel/brand with an enjoyable consistent aesthetic. Josh's son, that little dutch dude who plays drums is a friggin gold nugget, I think he has brought this really solid video brand together. I think if it were solely up to Josh, the aesthetic/video brand would be a mess, I mean, look at the pedals, no bueno, inspire no lust, never mind the sound/functionality of the pedal, the market is deep, good aesthetics are just a baseline necessity at this point, even Boss's timeless, utilitarian, jelly bean, 2nd gen CR-V boxy functionalitiness is pleasing and inspires desire... that Boss/JHS combo pedal even looks good. And, even if Josh is going for an anti-aesthetic with the pedals, it's not triggering that "monkey grab" pleasure button. So, in the pedals I think we see Josh's (lack) of aesthetic command, but in this channel, we see his son's aesthetic, which is VERY strong, and well executed. I think Josh is figuring out a little better how to be the boss (not Boss), how to find and work with talented people, and let those talented people do their thing to their maximum potential, while Josh still has control of everything, making the right decisions, exerting just the right amount of force and control to produce something he is happy with, while really bringing out the best of his collaborators/employees, those people bringing serious multiples of value to the company/brand than what they cost. So, KZfaq videos for even a small company require a lot of talent and skill, and that is a lot of work for one or even two people, especially if that person/people are trying to run a company, like designing pedals, managing production, sweating payroll, distribution deals, law suits, etc. etc. And in the end, it seems like Josh is closer to my zone of guitar taste, where Brian seems to focus on the blues lawyer crowd, not my taste, though I'm a former lawyer who really enjoys the creative use of pentatonic scales, aka QOTSA, as an obvious pop example. Just saying, I don't know of the artists Brian mentions in his vids, I guess they are country/southern artists???, I don't even know the genre(s) Brian designs for, if that is any indication of our musical/sound proximity. Again, no offense at all, both of these guys appear to be great dudes, and both companies probably produce good products, I don't know, I've never felt (I was kinda shocked at the cheap feel of EQD, if I'm honest), let alone played one of their pedals irl. I've got nothing but respect for both of them for simply building and running successful companies, here in America, in these times, yet another thing I don't think most people/consumers are aware of the immense difficulty/complexity of. I'm just shooting the shite with random strangers in virtual space with no consequence about our opinions/tastes, and more than anything, I'm trying to be positively constructive. Been through the same journey over the last two years. The irony being that when I was a full time musician for eleven years, I couldn’t afford to add new gear, just a Fulldrive 2, a Maxon OD9 a Univibe and a couple of Fender amps. Now I’m doing a 9-5 job, less professional playing but enjoying the addition and exploration of new sounds.

@Reid James The Blues Driver is on countless pro boards and has been well-regarded for decades. It's used in an ungodly amount of Nashville sessions, too. That's why it has gotten the Waza treatment. It's not underrated. It is literally how Keeley became a big deal. Modding THAT pedal.
