JHS Pedals

Күн бұрын

This week we talk with pedal-maker extraordinaire Chris Jupiter (founder and owner of JPTR FX) who explains that "music is about enjoying cool things, not the right things." We take a walk through the JPTR FX pedal line, including the Fernweh Delay, Warlow Fuzz and Jive Distortion, which are 100% as cool as they sound.

During late-childhood (when I was a lad of 59), I bought the last JHS-modded Soul Food from an online shop here in Tokyo. I was so thrilled to finally have a JHS product! A day later, I got an apologetic e-mail from the company saying that their inventory was incorrect and that there was no JHS-modded Soul Food in stock. I was gutted. These jams took me back to SF in the 80's and 90's. Different pedals brought back Bauhaus playing Bela Lugosi's Dead at Berkeley Square, Vudi's guitar in American Music Club's more chaotic songs of existential crisis, and Ken Kearney in Assassins of God songs like I Am My Disease. The stories of childhood trauma just added to the demented fun. Tanks for the memories!

Great company. I ordered a bunch of stuff from them and something got lost along the way. Without getting into details, they took care of me in a situation where a lot of businesses would have passed the buck to the shipper and left things in the kind of stalemate where neither party is willing to step up and compensate for the fact the customer paid for something and it never arrived. Despite the fact this all happened in the holiday rush last year, they had it sorted out on the next production run of that model. Can't speak highly enough of this team and the stuff they are doing.

Hey Josh, in like 1980, I was wearing a Bee Gees backpack, it was orange. I got tripped and pushed down by a kid with a Kiss backpack. He said “Bee Gees suck, Kiss rules”. I can’t listen to a Kiss song without thinking about that, but when I hear The Bee Gees I just remember my grandma. All I have left to remember her by is my original pressing vinyl Saturday Night Fever, it was all I wanted from her estate. Most guitars, whenever you're entering extreme distortion + compression territories, I find that backing the volume pot on the guitar will introduce a whole lot of noise, sometimes resulting in very strange sonic results.

JPTR is good but Chris needs to learn a few things about running a business. 5 months to get a Warlow. The excuse was a vacation (that no form of email auto-responder was set for). If he gets the communication and organization aspect of his business figured out, he'll continue to do well.

My favorite Manchester album is either "Mean Everything To Nothing" or "I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child." They are so raw but so incredibly produced and full sounding. It is a dichotomy that Manchester has perfected. I was lucky to see them live multiple times around the release of these albums with Brand New and Kevin Devine. They are certainly better live than on any of their records and it is a literal gut punch to see them in person. Josh nailed it when describing Andy's vocals and songwriting. I actually have tickets to see them with Foxing in January! :)

Josh/Weird Al-type sarcastic Dark story of my self-bullying 1990's angst: Once in college I got a C in Abstract Algebra (no, that's not a redundant name at all). It was the only C I got in college. It ruined my 4.0. So I only graduated Magna Cum Louder (sic) instead of Summa with two Bachelors degrees. *fake cry then eats chocolate* But I didn't have any student loans ...then... And come to think of it I retook it and got an A as an adult... Because I'm a giantic nerd. *adjusts pocket protector/trapper keeper* Yeah I got out of a lot of much deserved beatings by doing everyone's homework. Cheers. B "Untouch me" made me lol.

JPTR FX are my favorite pedals for their unique, interesting, unexpected, yet musical sounds. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but perfect for those with an adventurous spirit. These are the pedals that make playing electric guitar fun. The Fernweh, Silvermachine, and Kaleidoscope are my favorite pedals. I could not pick just one. Good to see Chris's pedals on your Channel. 😎😎😎

There's no Nikolai Tesla, it's Nikola Tesla. He was an orthodox Christian, Serb, born and raised in Croatia, but Yugoslavia. Moved to the States and did some great work, but died broke. You can imagine that his life's path messes with the heads of nationalists in former Yugoslavia. Sorry for the digression. Great episode! I happened to pick up my first fuzz pedal a week ago. After watching the JHS show for a while, I thought that I really need a fuzz. I found a used Mad Professor Fire Red Fuzz for a very reasonable price, so I had to buy it. No regrets! Now I need some more fuzzes. I love the theme of the stories about childhood and life. 😄

I really enjoyed this episode, and i particularly appreciate the way you edited the transcriptions of the phone call, eliminating the "like"s. A for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Scar, I wasn't sure if it was that song or "Bah, Bah, Blacksheep", and that's always been a problem for me, especailly when asking for wool and I'm given an astronomical position. I won't sleep tonight. Oh, nearly forgot the Death Saw! It's quite really very amazing how one single man can take everything that's good about Sweden and put it in a tiny pedal. He should be awarded the Nobel prize for Incrustation.
