JHS Pedals

Жыл бұрын

Today in the basement, Josh is going to go over the JHS Crayon and it's multifaceted uses and abilities. The Crayon is essentially the "overdrive" part of the Colour Box, or the red section. Here's some copy from our website about the controls:
"The Crayon has controls for Master, Pre-Vol, Tilt, and a Hi-Pass toggle. The Master volume controls the overall volume of the unit, while the Pre-Vol acts as a gain control to go from a gritty preamp drive to over-the-top gated fuzz. These controls work together to create a ton of colorful tones that are extremely useful. The Tilt control is an active EQ where when set at 12 o’clock you have a flat EQ, while turning clockwise boosts highs and cuts bass, and turning counterclockwise boosts bass and cuts highs. This gives the Crayon the ability to be tailored to any rig for bass or guitar. The Hi-Pass toggle cuts your low end with a flick of the switch for the ability to cut through the mix or get lo-fi sounds. There is a dip switch on the right side of the pedal to choose either 200Hz or 750Hz cut for the Hi-Pass."
You can read more about it here and watch some demo vids: www.jhspedals....

Unless youre referring to his work on the live album Kicking Television, I’m pretty sure Jeff Tweedy does all the guitar work on a ghost is born including hell is chrome since it was pre Nels and Post Jay Bennett! (Although I read that all Jeff’s lead stuff at the time was inspired by Nels and that was part of why he ended up in the band)

Josh you must truly be an amazing human to be able to have developed such a team. Kudos Nick and everyone at JHS. I started out with Donner but now JHS is dominating. This is absolutely insane. He found a way to make a pedal that sounds exactly like Jack Whites guitar sound in The White Stripes. I own their Fuzz pedal but had I known this pedal existed, I would have bought this thing and thrown away every distortion pedal I currently own. Good god he’s a genius. I tried to get my friend to make a pedal for me like this once and he had no idea how to make it work. A dream come true.

The Crayon adds something special to your tone. It really makes whatever you’re playing sound like the studio album record. I have it on my Pink Floyd/ David Gilmour inspired board. It’s great for everything, but where it really shines is for songs from “The Wall”, especially ones that employ the direct into the console technique, like “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2”. Master all the way up, Pre just before breakup, Tilt on the treble side, and the Hi Pass on at 200. Perfect for those funky, compressed, DI tones.

Wilco are one of my favorite bands ever, and "A Ghost is Born" while not my very favorite album of theirs, is still very very good, and more than any other Wilco album, conjures very specific memories of a certain time in my life. I have such an indelible memory of listening to "Hell is Chrome" while lying on a bed in a dim candle lit room and the music just enveloping me with it's warm, right up close, impossibly languid dynamic, just so much space between the sounds, sparse yet so full of life.

This is a great video. I missed the 'Monday Monologues' videos but they seem to have been reborn as what I think of as the 'Josh Only' video format. I enjoy hearing Josh in his stream-of-consciousness mode, where he's just thinking aloud to a camera. I enjoy hearing what he says but I also feel like it's somehow doing him good. I enjoy all the JHS videos but particularly enjoy hearing Josh sort of let his mind wander, as he does in this one.

Amazing episode! This was the first JHS pedal I owned (also the first pedal I bought from Reverb). I desperately wanted a Color Box but couldn't afford it so I was pumped for this. Kudos to you guys for a super versatile pedal and for paring down so many useful features in a way that was still quality but more affordable

Concept for a pedal: "The Gumby." In tribute to the King of stop-motion animation, Mr. Art Clokey. His films were surrealistic like Mr. Nick's teaser. Pedal should be Gumby Green in color and be able to mold the time-space continuum just like Gumby (and his side-kick Pokey) could be pushed into different shapes to give the illusion of motion in two dimensions. I have the Color Box V1, by the way, and I appreciate its contribution to those of us that don't have a Neve desk..

A fella named Nason Naringella made a Neve and 1176 in a box. His hope, when I bought it, that I would think it sounded like a Neve and an 1176. I bought it and two months later released it back into the used market, professionally speaking. It was Niles away from my experience with those two units. Yours sounds like what a Neve does. This might be the third pedal I buy of JHS.

I absolutely adore my Crayon. The hardest part for me was learning that a little turn of a knob makes a massive difference. The question I'd love you to answer though is, where would YOU stick it in a pedal chain? Is it dependent on whether you're treating it as a preamp or fuzz (which would go first) or an OD which can go further down the line? A very subjective question but I'm curious as to your thoughts.
