In this week's episode, we discuss one of the most original EHX series ever made and answer the question, "How can you make your electric guitar sound like an organ, string ensemble, synthesizer or vintage keyboard?" Yeah, we're talking about the 9 Series.

New Pedal Idea: The guitar world needs an EASY TO USE / EDITABLE Basic Looper Pedal. Seriously, please read on. No drums and other junk, BUT a looper with the ability to EASILY EDIT the Start and Stop points. Call it “Closing The Loop.” Think of how easy it is to edit a video on your iPhone. You could have a screen that shows the loop graphically and have a start point knob on the left and an end point knob on the right that allow you to scroll in and crop part of the beginning and/or part of the end of the loop. Those knobs would allow you to scroll in and out on both ends of the loop to tweak the timing (I.e. to “close the loop.” It should also have the ability to add your little red switch with one click start and one click stop functions (none of that “two clicks to start BS). Another cool added feature could be an “Auto Record” group of settings with options for Auto Start, Auto Stop, 4 beat Count Down to Start (to allow you to do a volume swell at the beginning) and Auto Both. Please think about it. The world is filled with basic loopers and complicated loopers, but none of them have these easy edit functions. JHS could be the first and sell thousands with a big toll-out and a reasonable price (thinking sub-$200). If anyone at JHS actually reads this, thank you for your time and consideration. BD

I am blessed to be one of the first people to own the Key 9 and did a long winded video about it. I've had it for years - love it sometimes, other times need a break from it. I recently pulled it out and rewatched the Bill Rupert videos (he is a treasure). One thing that I think should also be said about these 9 pedals: use your bridge pickup. Yes... the bridge. Notice that's what Bill does... and I fought that because I come from a Jazz background... though the proof is in the pudding. The Key 9 seems to "like" the higher timbral/frequency range of the pickups closer to the bridge. They make for a better blend, though even when you turn the dry all the way down the "effect" sounds better from the bridge. Mike Matthews and the team at EHX think this stuff up and sell us dope things at affordable prices. We are wealthy to be musicians today - and that's just pure fact.

Proud owner of a very early B9. Some other tips for potential users: put a compressor before (to feed the B9 a consistent signal) or after (to tame unwanted cutoffs or spikes). Ditch the Mod control and put a decent Leslie emulation after it with a Ramp up/down option (I use the Leslie mode in my Digitech EX7 Expression Factory). If you aim to approximate a Hammond, play single notes, lots of double stops or chord fragments of 3 or 4 strings, don't bend and make the most of the sustain. OD/Dist after the B9 is instant Jon Lord

I pair my B9 with EHX's own superb Lester G Deluxe. Hell of a pedal duo especially when the organ sound gets it's own amp and doesn't have to go through with the guitar. I'd also recommend a volume pedal somewhere to help even out spikes more easily.

I am the only musician in my church and lead worship playing acoustic/electric guitar, along with three girl singers. I make my own backing tracks with Aeros Looper and Beatbuddy. But what makes all the difference is the EHX String 9, and the Stryman Cloudburst pedals! The backing tracks I make sound great. The SingularSound Looper and drum machine make it so easy to create them. But the String 9 and Cloudburst make my acoustic sound just incredible! Would recommend all this gear to anyone wanting to make the best backing tracks, and want a single acoustic guitar to sound like heaven!

I hope one day that they make a nano version of the Mel9, and the others as well. I don't need the extra I/O, 1 in & 1 out is good enough. If they can now make the pico series, the DSP/board issues are solved enough to do this. They can at least shrink these to nano-size.

To me, when the whole guitar pedal and gear demo boom period began, the holy trinity of gear whispers were Bill, Andy Martin, and the always entertaining Gearmanndude. Thanks for bringing back the style of the pandemic-era videos which got me through 2020. I'm a bassist who has used an EHX Bass Mono Synth pedal for years, but what I's REALLY like them to develop is a pedal FOR bass which emulates all the classic keyboard bass sounds like Taurus, Mini Moog, organ pedals, etc., as well as more modern keyboard bass sounds. A polyphonic pedal which tracks well on bass -- I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Awesome video! Thank you so much for covering this series of pedals. They are truly spectacular pedals for coming up with new song-writing ideas especially for guitars who suck at playing keyboard. I think II need need all of them. They all have fantastic sounds. EHX should do a larger pedal that combines all of these pedals into one big multi-FX unit. That's what I would like to see from EHX. Also the songs you guys were playing were absolutely amazing. I hope you guys do a compilation album of some of these songs. The last few on this video I could listen to over and over. Very fun songs! I especially liked the string one (Dracula Boss Fight). That one sounded very goth and fun song for Halloween. As a Type-O-Negative fan that made me very happy.

The best way I've found to use the 9-series pedals in with an EHX Tri-Parallel - the parallel mixing of a single source through any combination of 3 effects loops allows the 9-series pedal to sound like a separate instrument mixed (as if at the sound board) with the guitar with various guitar effects added in the other fx loops. By heavy use of the sustain on a couple of the pedals (Mel-9 and Synth-9 particularly), a pad + guitar can be achieved (somewhat like a Freeze, but only affecting one of the instruments)!

I bought a Mel 9 shortly after its release and it’s been one of my all time favourite effects pedals ever since it arrived and I plugged into it. You can spend hours with this outstanding pedal and still not get the best from it. You need to spend a few quality weeks in isolation with a Mel 9 to fully understand what it can do especially when linked to other outstanding effects pedals.👍

Listening to Bill Rupert sold me on the c9. I run signal through aby switch. A goes to guitar rig and B goes to PA channel. I have to drop highs and volume there because I'm not going to finger pick just for c9 sake. It makes a nice filler lower in the band mix and only use it for extra texture here and there. Ty for this great video!

I have the C9 and the Mel 9, they both benefit from a limiter and/or compressor following them just to tame the dynamic, also a rotary pedal behind the organ sounds is great, and reverb of course. They also sound good with solid state amps or preamps.

I actually couldn't get over how amazing Nick & Addison's bass(es) sounded. A couple of the pedals I thought, "oh, that's the Green-Eyed Lady" sound or "Oh, that's "The Violence of Truth" sound. Actually, that might've been the same pedal, different settings. I've long wanted to pick up the M9 but I think the C9 and whatever the Rhodes-sounding pedal was (E9?) I'd actually strongly consider as well. Great jams, gents.

My guess is 864 ... Great video! I've tried to find a video with all these to compare. I've been debating on getting one for a few years now.

I have the Mel9 And B9. I use them constantly in a live band setting. The Mel9 has to be my favorite pedal ever. It just sounds huge.

I gotta say, I picked up a Mel9 and use it like Bill showed in the EHX demo as a backing to guitar (after a hotone acoustic simulator pedal, dry at 100%, wet at ~25%, followed by reverb) and it sounds great. The Cello really shines as an accompaniment imo.

What I love about Josh is he’d be doing the same type of content (with different production values) if he didn’t have a pedal company. He loves all pedals.

I'm a happy owner of a C9, a Key9 and a Mel9. 😁For doing demos on my own, this pedals are really fantasctic as I can't play keyboards but I love blended sounds of guitars and keybords. I usually use only the wet sound from the pedal, and play guitar parts separately
