Awesome vid. Suggestion. When you crank down learn to leave the reel handle at the 10 o'clock position so you can pull with leverage right hand and left hand at the same time. If you get two winds and always return to the same position you will get more comfortable, more efficient and less tired. Dont forget the butcapp next time save the stomach bruising.

I love the difference in boat layouts in Australia compared to the US. Zero cockpit in this boat, but being an aluminum hull I totally get it. The built in swim platform is your cockpit and you get to essentially drive from the transom. Lol. Makes it a little smoother. Figured everyone would be in cats by now there. Have aluminum cats not taken off in AU? There are quite a few builders along the Gulf of Mexico. Seems like they would be big there. Build quality looks incredible. Great video guys.

Awesome trip Rod! I don't know all the rules so could you explain why you don't use wire leaders.
@itsaboutTime2revolt
@itsaboutTime2revolt 6 ай бұрын
Well, I think for several reasons really: It effects the performance of the lure. Saltwater species are way smarter than freshwater species...and a steel leader would destroy your catch rate. Salt water is extremely corrosive to metal fishing gear. But mostly they'd be ineffective...because the species that bite through your leader, like sharks, will bite right through a wire leader just the same.

You guys have a lot of expensive gear for jigging deep, but no descending tools? They make venting tools and weighted rigs to help take them down 30-40 meters. Doesn't take much to help them get back down. Just a thought from the other side of the world. Great vid as always
@rokkitkit
@rokkitkit 8 ай бұрын
Yes I’d probably look into getting something for sure if I go again. The only fish that struggled to get down comfortably as the long nose trevally so we took it home to eat. But yes definitely would be a good piece of kit👍
@itsaboutTime2revolt
@itsaboutTime2revolt 6 ай бұрын
While venting a fish suffering from barotrauma, is certainly a practice that helps the fish descend...Studies have proven that using the venting tools results in a very very low survival rate for the released vented fish. Which basically means the venting practice is ultimately more effective in helping the angler sleep better at night, since they watched all their released fish descend after stabbing a hole into their swim bladder, etc...than it is in actually saving a fish's life. However the barotrauma release kits, with the descending weights, are definitely a better option...and I've actually even seen some home made weighted descending release systems that were pretty keen. But personally, my preferred method (that is 100% effective for descending a fish, and not reducing their normal survival rate) is just practicing being situationally aware that I'm fishing deep water, and being diligent as I'm bringing the fish up to the surface...because as long as you don't just rip them up from deep too fast, the fish takes care of his own pressure regulation. I simply make sure that I'm giving the fish just that little bit of necessary time (Which isn't much) every 10ft of depth change...by either fighting it steady at a medium pace, or pausing my retrieve occasionally. The only time I don't do that, is if there are so many sharks keyed into the action...that a slower paced retrieve, or any pausing in your retrieval, is also a death sentence for the hooked fish, AND my gear. In which case, I just crank them up fast AF, and plan on not releasing the fish who can't descend...or I just move spots. But I bet a weighted descending kit would be clutch then too.

Why do you tie the wrong end on your leader? For me, your leader is tied to the other end of the jig without the hook. Puts a little more non contact with you're leader. But I don't live in Australia either, so there's something for tying your line so close to the hook.
