I used four jigs in my last video, and I just want to show you what they look like and how they work. First I have the glue up board, then I have the clamping press, and I have the rest for the parting tool and also the templet for the angle, last I have the back support for the bowl as you cut it off. At the end I’ll show you the project as it stands with my salad bowl sets.

Looks as though you found some interesting videos to help you with making a bowl from a board. Happy you found them. That was my reason for making them, I did add in the video that a piece of HDPE would be a good option for the tool guide. Your oak one should be fine but just a thought. Gary

Thank you for the comment. I get a lot of my instruction from your videos, you are my main source of help on my projects. I try to do it my way, or make any adjustments to suit my particular situation. I only have a 10” lathe and can’t make larger items so I have to adjust my scale to fit. You are an inspiration to me since I may be a couple years older… but not wiser. Love your videos.

I was lucky enough to have a friend give me a full dining room of laminated hardwood flooring. He purchased his house from a cabinet maker who took his off cuts and made 12” x 12” x 3/4” thick floor tiles basically and did the entire dining room in it. Walnut oak, cherry, maple hickory, and a few other varieties were just all randomly made into strips and laminated together to make beautiful floor tiles. They were getting pretty well torn up and he was remodeling so he gave me all of the wood. Of course I made him a few projects out of the pieces for his wife, especially But I don’t have to laminate wood together for quite some time for bowls for boards. I love your jig for gluing up though, and I will duplicate your design most likely for the press. A very good video, sir. I was going to make a jig like yours to put the parting tool in But I actually found that if I just scribed a line on my lathe bed and use my normal tool, Rest, I could basically line up my thin parting tool with the line on the lathe bed, and that was accurate enough for me to cut through the wood quite nicely. I’m curious how you used your backer board in operation. Your bowls are a beautiful finished product for sure. Well done

I'm not Sure what you mean in the last part of your comment. "I’m curious how you used your backer board in operation." let me know more of what you mean please so I can comment on it. Thank you for your praise of my bowls, I've been working on them most of the year. I love making the jigs I need to accomplish all my tasks. I'm working on a new system for segmented bowls.

@@It.All.Fits.Wood.Products15 I haven’t watched the video for a few days but I think you had a vertical jig set up behind your board that you were going to cut to maybe keep the ring in place to keep it from dropping down around the spindle? I was curious about that and how you use it. I also have a thought for you that might help you. I had a long serrated stainless steel bread knife that my wife no longer wanted sitting around my shop for years (can’t throw anything away) and finally decided to make a very thin parting tool from it. Its blade was maybe 1/32” thick and quite long and fairly flexible. I had to grind off the serrated edge as this would sit on the tool rest. It works amazingly well, especially for parting rings on bowls from boards! I was worried about the flex in the blade but it actually helps to follow the kerf into the wood as you cut on the diagonal. I don’t need to widen the cut much to make it through my 3/4” boards I usually use and it just flows down through the cut. I can cut thinner rings and get more height from my bowls because of that. Very little waste and less stair stepping on the glue ups. I just hone the front tip before cutting a bowl out of habit but it actually keeps a decent edge fairly long. I also do pendants on end grain leftovers from spindle turnings and may only have 3/8-1/2” protruding from the chuck. I can face and decorate the pendant and use this to part it off with a very narrow cut. Allows me to make something from what I used to throw away. Also works great parting of larger diameter pieces. I have never had a catch because I think the flexibility follows the edge of the cut without grabbing. The handle fits my hand perfectly and for $0. It is my go to parting tool now for most situations. My parts are less than 1/16” wide which I love cause I hate wasting any wood. Maybe you’ll benefit from this. Thanks for your very valuable video on bowls from boards

@@scottstubberud1137 If you watch the other Videos you can see that the back stop is used behind the board that is being sliced to make the bowl parts. If you keep it close to the board it lets you cut your slice and holds it from spinning off to the back where the chuck is. Thank you for your comments and hope that my Videos will help people understand how it's done to creat a bowl from a board.
