Jim Beam Hardin's Creek Jacob's Well (107 proof, $150-200+) vs Knob Creek 12 Year (100 proof, $70)
We put this matchup into our blind head-to-head pool because Jim Beam's special release of Hardin's Creek Jacob's Well made some waves thanks to it's high age statement and equally high price tag, and we wanted to see if a more readily available Jim Beam product could go toe-to-toe with it in a blind tasting.

It's done quite well for us in other tastings too. Perhaps an off day, or perhaps our bottle has went south. It is interesting that both of these come across a lot better when we're not blind, but that could speak to our inherent bias as well.

This was our second head-to-head for the day, after Sazerac vs Michter's Rye, so two low proofers that didn't exactly impress. You'd think these two would shine like all-stars after that first head-to-head. We usually take several minutes between head-to-heads, clear our palates with lots of water, and don't start the next video until we feel like our palates are ready to go. If we feel like our palates aren't ready we'll shoot a Tuesday "talking head" video where we don't drink anything between head-to-heads.

I too was surprised by the result for the KC 12. I have it and a 120 proof 9 year on the shelf but also realized that I rarely reach for them. The 9 is probably over 1½ years old and still ⅔ full. The 12 year has probably only had 2 pours from it and it's at lease 4 ~ 5 months old. They're decent but I don't find myself reaching for them.

I like KC12 a lot but I do keep 9yr picks at 120proof on hand at all times... to me one of the best bang for your buck bourbons out there, along with JD SB BP and EC BP and of course Rare Breed. Kinda my mount rushmore of Bourbons...curious what would be your top 4 or Mount Rushmore for under $100 an honrable mention of mine is SmokeWagon UNUF but the latest batches just not as good and vary batch to batch to much these days.
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey Жыл бұрын
100% agreed on the recent SW UCUF batches being a downgrade over previous batches. The Mount Rushmore of bourbon under $100 is a super interesting concept for a video. We may do that. Off the top of our heads we wouldn't disagree with your lineup at all though. KC 120 SiB picks, Rare Breed, ECBP, and JDSBBP would be hard to argue with for those that enjoy higher proof.

At first I was thinking Erin was being a bit harsh but thinking about it, I kind of have to agree, at least a bit. A good nose can punch my score up a fair few points if the palette is good. But a muted/uninteresting nose won't result in me docking the same number of points down, again if the palette is good. So, a good amount of upside, but not too much downside. How I think of the finish is the opposite. I'll add a few points if the finish is good, but if the finish is bad, I tend to dock points from the score more harshly.

I've not had the Knob Creek 12 since I can't afford it, but it seems odd that a mere three more years in the barrel would turn good Knob Creek 9 into mediocre bourbon. I know that tasting blind can bring out reality in interesting ways, but I also know that many factors can make whisky taste different than it normally would. I wonder if one or more of those factors affected this tasting. Just FWIW, I'm drinking Knob Creek 9 even as I watch. 🥃
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey Жыл бұрын
Great comment, and while on paper you're not wrong about three more years not making a huge difference (especially between 9 years and 12 years), barrel selection and blending do play a large part as well. Beam likely pulls "better" barrels for their 12 year releases. It's possible our bottle has gone south or we were just having an off day... likely the latter considering they both came across less flavorful than they normally do.

What's interesting is that many (most?) tasters will report a peanut note at least somewhere in the Jim Beam profile, amid the other usual bourbon notes. It may take until the third sip, but there's usually a nuttiness noticed. There may be an even more pronounced peanut note in the 9-year Knob Creek, IMHO. But neither of you encountered it in the KC 12. Sometimes in the blinds, the tasters if they're not careful, can tear a hole in the universe. You may have done that. I'm not saying the space-time continuum didn't have it coming, but still... I hope this will not affect my current earthly reality. I'm just getting used to it.

"I'm not saying the space-time continuum didn't have it coming" 😂😂 Love seeing your comments pop up Larry! This was an interesting one for sure. Both are more fruit-forward than most Beam products tend to be, and we both have a bit of "nutty blindness" as it can disguise itself as oak during blinds for both of us unless it's very peanut/peanut butter forward. We're going to put each of these into other head-to-heads in the blind pool (Jacob's Well vs Baker's 7 and KC12 vs KC9) to see how they fare in future blinds. We suspect they'll have better showings than they did here.
