The county has had bad storms all the way back to our founding. Nothing has changed except the dollar value. The past couple of years has been devastating to everyone across the country.

Measuring hurricane damage in dollars is idiotic and deceptive - home prices have doubled and even quadrupled over the last decade…so it doesn’t mean the storm is more destructive…it means it costs a lot more to fix less damage.

Inflation is the main cause for the increased losses. When a dollar buys less than a hundredth of what it bought in 1950, of course the cost is greater in devalued dollars.

Inflation is at something like 32% which means that cost of product and labor to effect repairs has gone up, so yeah, that cost is reflected in your insurance premiums.

My house payment went from $778 to $1275 just because of insurance. I am on a fixed income. The writing is on the wall. I will not be able to stay in my home. Ironically enough, I am receiving offers to buy my home daily from companies. But of course not at full price.

Ron DeSantis really doesn’t want to talk about climate change. While the relationship between anthropogenic global warming and tropical cyclones is complex, no doubt did the very usually warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico intensify Idalia and higher sea levels increased its storm surge.

And no doubt have humans have had an impact making these hurricanes stronger. The Hurricane Florida has from Wilma in 2005 to Hermine in 2016 was more luck. Big time Hurricanes hit the US during that time such as Ike, Irene, or Sandy. They just didn’t hit Florida. Looking at the Atlantic Ocean as a whole, since the 1980s we have been in a period of heightened hurricane activity likely due to the natural AMO, but human caused Global Warming is adding a background effect which is exacerbating the natural signal

I remember that we had friends who were trying to get to family & friends doing water rescues and taking in supplies to people & their animals that were trapped, his appearance made them all STOP - yeah 75 was closed with flooding & if I remember correctly we still did not have cell coverage yet in some areas, as they were still trying to get up the temporary towers, it was horrible what he allowed to be stopped; just for what a photo op?

also alot of these places didnt have the proper building codes which insurance companies wouldnt cover. after hurricane andrew building codes where upgraded and some insurance companies required folks to have it and some didnt and were also dropped. Sadly things like this are required to teach folks they need to upgrade to mitigate extreme damage not so much flooding you cant stop that. but you can withstand wind damage. south florida learned by putting power lines underground to limit power loss during these storm aside from shutting down during peak storm times to inspect lines and then power up.

Exactly correct; Miami Dade upgraded their building codes a few years ago to mitigate this type of damage. Desantis unfortunately is too busy working on woke, DEI, banning books and firing duly elected officials to actually work on things that actually matter to the every day resident.

Suggestion. Camping World has even $5 a day new camper rentals, for those who've lost homes, and for FEMA employees. Also, know how many can buy second hand?, and keep them stored for emergencies. Florida is an important second hand recreational vehicles and boats state. I'm also getting a rare occurrence, that seems there will be one in the Panhandle. . I don't even want to think about it, after the Cat 2 in October 2019, and there's still tarps on buildings where I live, on the sides of the buldings. Roofs were changed before the new property management company. They've only done repairs from insurance company payouts money, not from the community. From someone who had an insured sailboat that took out the dock, and from the next door yacht club, that repaired the fence. After Hurricane Ivan, there was some build back better, by FEMA, upgraded alot of qualifying homes, and I don't know if still is FEMA, was lifting all old one story concrete beach houses. Those are indestructible, Old vintage Pensacola Beach homes, but definitely completely flood during hurricanes. That's why some people had into almost entirely tiled indoor walls. No doubt up on concrete blocks now, probably still working on, Filled concrete just like the concrete stucco houses. I've haven't been out there to see any, but probably look nice. They're the colorful bohemian types of homes, and whoever owns them, buys them. Those are definitely worth more now. Some were two stories, or roof top decks, and I wonder what doing with those too. Those are great for Blue Angels weekend. That's flying right over our heads. Love it! Totally thrilling energy. I'm a jet sound junkie. A spiritual experience. Can't live without seawalls on the water. My place just has some slightly elevated rocks, but it'd be nice a solid rock wall. Like a viking sea fortress. Goes great with the colors of the place. If everything was up to me? This place would shine.

Jim Cantore: legend. Watched him as the Tuscaloosa tornado tore though, then went & saw his broadcast on two major tornadoes I chased: Moore OK 2013, & Joplin 2011. Jim Cantore did a great job yet again! Been watching him for years. So Florida's Gov did speak some clear facts about how inflation is playing a clear role in the cost of storm damage, but Cantore kinda roasted him over the clear need to build things better for storms like this long term so damages don't continue to be this bad every time.

Because the agenda is garbage, that’s why. What’s your actual solution and why do you believe that governments that can’t balance budgets or run elections can solve evolving weather patterns? Why do you believe that we can cannibalize green space for solar farms and windmills and decimate human prosperity and somehow that’s positive? Why do you believe this is a global problem without acknowledging that the production of electric cars has 60% larger carbon footprint and is controlled by China? You say “recorded history” that’s not all of history, that’s a very small sliver of history. DeSantis controls what he can as a governor - he’s humble and self-aware enough to realize that as a Governor, he can fight big sugar and restore the Everglades, that he can enhance building codes and infrastructure to better withstand the storms, but he can’t stop them from happening. He doesn’t answer the questions the way you want him to but he does answer the questions.

A real leader does not use a hurricane and a racist killing as a campaign stop. A real leader does not change the laws so he can continue to be a Governor (although an absent one) while he runs for President. A real leader does not indoctrinate kids religiously. A real leader does not look suck up to an indicted past criminal president. A real leader does not look around to others before raising his hand to a specific question. We have not had a decent leader in FL for many years.

It was a terrible forecast, right up until landfall they predicted it to cross Florida to Jacksonville and then out to Sea instead it ripped through GA and SC causing Flooding and Tornados the whole way.
