Why are we equating the niche family finances to the national effort to decrase infaltion? The treasurers' job is to decrease borad based inflation. Not to dictate family spending. This is the issue with Qanda - we need expert opinions on the show and an acknowledgement/context of the politicians role.

Next question: If you were going after inflation you'd go after Corporate profits which is where the inflation truly is worldwide.

Lol this presenter and probably with pressure from the board and the upper managment of the abc is holding the treasurer to as standard lower than that of all the LNP ministers who have ever appeared on the show. This treasurer is speaking in a manner that is very frank & honest. He isn’t ducking and weaving, and the policy and discussions he is referencing is extremely complicated with huge ramifications for global energy prices, the entire energy market Internationally, with any mismanagement or carelessness potentially wiping out superannuation and reductions in interest rates. The line of questioning employed by the host is dogmatic, and pointed towards complete and utter redundancy. If the ABC wants to curate an open and honest public discourse, it should abandon these kinds of click-bait emotional questioning, and instead put it’s energy into asking the RIGHT questions. Why not have a pannel of 3rd party economists not linked to the LNP or shill think tanks, on with the treasurer and ask them what they think about the budget? Honestly, as a long term passionate advocate of the ABC, I find the line of questioning, direction, and overall presentation of Q&A and most of the ABCs news and current affairs programs to be directed toward to people of low intelligence, and devoid of any reason or integrity, with the only exception being 4 corners and maybe media watch. The Murdoch cartel’s takeover of the board has essentially turned a once great asset of the nation into a swamp of gutter dwelling, delusional and destructive egomaniacal vermin, who at best fit the narrative of the used cad salesman, and at worst, work diligently to undermine our democracy and stifle critical thinking. My hope, and the hope of many reasonable people is that the ABC is privatised. And irrevocable laws passed that make it illegal to publish garbage that deals to sow the seeds of contempt, or muddy the waters between fact and fiction. No person with any shred of dignity would except money or power to go on national TV and misdirect the public as this presenter clearly is. This man is doing a disservice to the people of Australia, and should be reprimanded or let go. Your audience isn’t stupid, so perhaps spitting in their faces with this vile tripe isn’t the best way to secure their support?

I was in that audience and I regret not putting my hand up...I was told u can't do that...Mr Chalmers answers were all platitudes!!! First Australia especially SA had the highest electricity prices in the world before the Ukraine war...we privatised the grid and prices have soared ever since...then on the tax cuts he tried to make out he doesn't want them to go through but I thought he was the treasurer??? This man is third in charge of the workers party and releases a budget that any liberal would be proud of...disappointing Mr Chalmers

Oh and I forgot the main issue. Gas and oil companies paid 1.7 billion in tax from 138 billion in profits...that's a tax rate of 1.5 percent. This is criminal and all he says is that they can offset the investment to the profits. Firstly most of these companies have paid no tax over seven years or more! Secondly If I build an extension to my house (an investment) I can't do the same thing. Mr Chalmers you and the parliament write the laws that allow this to happen. I lived in Norway and they tax oil companies a 22 percent corporate tax on profits and a 56 percent special tax. That's nearly 80 percent of the profits. There workers in the field still get good pay and have very good working conditions and hours. It's simple...if they don't want to pay higher taxes you can leave the stuff in the ground!!! That's the attitude of the Norwegians!!!

The LNP has plenty not to be proud of, and the labor budget is essentially the LNP budget with some small changes to the budget. I do however agree that it was all platitudes. He and his party were the ones blaming the cost of living crisis on the LNP. Now they’re blaming external factors just like the LNP were before they were voted out. They also claim the LNP hid electricity prices increase but labor knew this. They got the draft report sometime in the first quarter but hung on to the claim that they would decrease energy prices by 2025 by $275. This is completely on them for lying then and acting as if they’re honest now.

Interesting. I watched on tv and found Jim Chalmers to be refreshingly candid. Some questioners could not receive his answers. He was clear about the policy settings and their decision making. A tough budget to start to bring down a one trillion dollar debt that will increase with inflation and rising interest rates. I feel like when the coalition lied through their teeth and handicapped us as a nation, that was acceptable and now a vastly more transparent government cops the flak for the previous mobs abject policy failures. We can’t keep kicking the can down the road.

I think the Treasurer deserves some credit regardless of Party for sitting in a national forum at this time in world economic instability. I am prepared to get on the boat with them in turbulent seas. Remember many Treasurers in past left it to the Finance Ministers if Fun Review Editors to interview and drop the Economic Audit Committee or the Productivity Commission with nasty household cuts. Hold onto the baseball vats for moment because this has been coming for 10 years or since before GFC. My hope is they create a yearly energy credit. In WA we have been my cv my to win the Bond case and redistribute that $10million? to households now and the gas reservation policy of a decade ago. But we aren't so selfish over here we don't want the Finance Team to deliver that to the East Coast on a 3 monthly basis to help with temporary inflation until hopefully Japan/South Korea help build infrastructure for the LNG we export so we don't have to. That would be progress. Either way, I'd rather be throwing a snag on the barbie this Xmas at the beach than freezing in Europe as snow falls and they have energy inflation. Think of them and contrast.

A ~zero interest rate for a ~decade was always a debt trap, because the global economy has been a super bubble since the ‘80s. The only bigger scam (than debt) that comes to mind is superannuation. How are over-leveraged SAFs possibly going to pay their retirees, if the Govt. stops buying back bonds?

10:59 he and his party blamed the LNP for the cost of living crisis all throughout the campaign. Now he and his party are blaming external factors. It’s almost as if they lied and that they’re just as bad. It’s also almost as if he doesn’t know what to do yet and is stalling for time.

@@oliverhumphris2569 so labor blames it on external factors? The energy crisis we had after the election yes is on the LNP. They should’ve done more to supplement the inconsistent energy production from renewables as it makes up too much of our grid to not have a base load technology supporting it. To be fair they did try to with gas but labor opposed it. In this case, labor was the one lying, especially considering that they had every piece of info they needed before the election to alter their policies if necessary before the campaign. There was a draft report on the energy market made available before the final report that was delivered after the election. I’m no fan of Scotty but Albanese isn’t significantly better either.

@@mellofello2537 for their part of the problem yes, but I’d also not like them to lie like they did earlier this year in the campaign only to come out with the same excuse the LNP were wheeling out in response to labor’s criticisms of them in the cost of living crisis.
@carn941
@carn941 Жыл бұрын
No way you actually believe that within hours of winning an election, before labor even sat for parliament, that inflation and cost of living was caused by the ALP. No one can be that stupid to deny reality, I refuse to believe that. Do you really think NOTHING happend for TEN years under the LNP? Keeping inmind inflation and cost of living did not appear instantly.
