ROH had to shut down right after doing its biggest Supercard of Honor. A little over 6000 people. Work that out 100 000 000 x13 +300 000 000... And that's British pounds. On a club that has never in history made a profit in a league where that is normal. Ie finance isn't an issue for aew.

It’s so disappointing. AEW should be something better than it is. TNA never got to run on TNT/TBS several nights a week. Tony Kahn has squandered this opportunity because he wants to feed his ego and be a wrestling booker. He’s selfish. He doesn’t really care about making a thriving company to give people a place to work. He thinks he does, but really he’s just in it for his ego. And deep down he’ll say, “It’s my family’s money, my company, I can do what I want,” because he’s selfish. Someone who didn’t have a massive ego would go, “This company is bigger than me. Things are not going well. I need to bring somebody in who can turn this around so it can be thriving and successful.” He’s just like Vince McMahon. Vince wanted the show that he wanted and he slowly strangled it over 2 decades and made wrestling lame.

I honestly don't understand the AEW wrestlers' mindset. It used to be, a guy put in his time learning by wrestling in high school gyms and local civic auditoriums to try and make it to the big leagues one day. Most AEW wrestlers want to stay minor league and get big league pay. The rest of them want to be minor league Japanese wrestlers so bad they can't stand it. Tony should have just built a big civic auditorium and put up Japanese decorations and he could have saved a bunch of money.

Went to the same venue in January 2024 and literally half the building was closed with security directing everyone to go the other way. That entire side of the seating was covered, and they still couldn’t sell out the other half of the building. I later saw that the 9,000+ capacity venue only had 2,400 people in attendance. Long comment for those interested in the real trouble AEW is in at the moment as far as a property. AEW had 1.4 million watching the debut episode of Dynamite, then the next week it dropped 400 thousand viewers. Since then, they haven't really gotten close to that number in the last 5 years. They drew 1.3 million for a Mike Tyson episode and 1.3 for Punk's return. There was never really a Golden Era for viewership, just one-off bumps that immediately go back to the average of about 700,000. The live event attendance is a direct result of the TV show not being all that popular. To put it in perspective, Sunday Night Football (NFL) draws 16-18 million, and the #10 rated show this month draws 9 million. In the last couple of years, WWE RAW is drawing about 1.8 million per episode and Smackdown draws about 2.8 million per episode on average, with peaks at around 3 million. Basically, people don't watch the show if the arena is filled, they fill the arena if they watch the show. That may seem obvious, but I don't think Tony Khan is familiar with how to grow in the space. The narrative that "not as many people watch TV anymore" is true - but there are still over half the population that does still watch TV, and 16 million watch regular season football games while 700,000 watch AEW. The quick analysis is obvious - if people regularly watch wrestling, they watch WWE. If people watch AEW, it's not necessarily for the wrestling, but rather for a special event. For those that don't already know network structure, the network buys a show in hopes to sell enough advertising that they profit greatly from the investment. ESPN just agreed to a $7.8 billion deal with the NCAA over the next 6 years in hopes that they can sell $10 billion in advertising. I've worked in broadcasting, entertainment and journalism for over 25 years - currently work with national radio/streaming sports networks - and AEW's struggles are pretty easy to spec. Viewer retention is the most important data point for most networks, and because there is such a lack of attractive personalities and episodic throughlines in the weekly stories, it just doesn't work as a TV show in its current state. So viewership is all over the place, and that's a tough sell for network media sellers sitting in a room with Pepsi or McDonalds. AEW is better suited toward the UFC model of a major event every 4-8 weeks. Stack the card, promote for 4 weeks, fill the arena, grow the viewership for the next one. It's a long game, but AEW is/was trying to shortcut to the top with an existing powerhouse of a brand already dominating the space. It's bold of Tony to do that, but the success rate is low. AEW's focus is on converting WWE fans to watch more AEW, more regularly. WWE's philosophy continues to be how to draw non-wrestling viewers into watching wrestling.

Someone told me this and I’ve never gotten over it. But AEW cannibalized its own talent to the point no one cares. Adam Copeland killed Christian Cage’s push, Okada made Eddie Kingston a joke, they chose to buy up imports and push them over MJF and Swerve when they were red hot. As a guy who just got back into wrestling less than a year ago, who the fuck enjoys watching these guys who’s entire gimmicks are “I was a really big deal in another company. And now I’m a badass.” When that’s the gimmick of 12/15 of its big stars. And of the 3 who ain’t, two are the bucks.

Sold to whom? AEW effectively has no real assets except the TV rights deals for the shrinking shows, that are coming up for renewal and the rocky PPV deals - and nobody with half a brain is going to buy a company that has to pay millions to wrecks like Jericho and ratings repellents/killers like the Bucks, for years to come. They lost their international streaming deal for 42-or-so countries. AEW has never made a single cent in net profits in its existence, just lost millions every year since 2019/20. If Shahid Khan pulls the plug on Tony, AEW is dead. Unless he finds another wrestling-obsessed billionaire nepo baby to screw over. Nobody else is going to buy it, because it's not a legit business, it's Tony's hobby.
@ravenlit
@ravenlit 13 күн бұрын
Nobody's gonna buy AEW at this point, for the same reason Vince was able to buy WCW for...what? $3 million? The reason McMahon got such a sweetie of a deal is because all he was really paying for was the WCW video library and a handful of rings. There were no TV deals, there were no other assets...WCW was dead in the water and so far beyond being a damaged brand in 2001 that not even a necromancer could've brought it back from the dead. AEW is no different, and at this point, not even the most exceptionally skilled wrestling booker can bring it back. Tony Khan is the very definition of "overconfident idiot". Truly unfortunate, because with that kind of money backing it, and all the talent it has (Young Bucks and Jungle Boy aside), AEW should be thriving. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I think Tony Khan heard all of the stories about how Vince McMahon is in charge of everything and thought that was the way to go. What he doesn't realize is, while yes, the buck stops with him, Vince also knows that he doesn't know everything, and so hired the best people he could find to be in charge of various aspects of the business. Not even Vince McMahon, for all of his insane ideas, ever booked his shows alone in a bubble. He brought along great minds like Patterson and Cornette to help. Plus, Khan doesn't know what it is to be a boss. That 2022 All In media scrum with CM Punk? McMahon would have NEVER tolerated outbursts like Punk had, whether they were justified or not, the way Tony just sort of let it happen. It's okay not to know how to do everything, Tony. Hire someone who knows what they're doing. And never, ever, _ever_ let any of the boys be a part of the front office at the same time. That's called a conflict of interest. So yeah... RID (Rest In Disgrace) AEW. Your talent deserves a better CEO.

Reminds me off a joke. A famous cardiologist dies and a bunch of colleagues attend his funeral. At the end of his service his coffin is wheeled toward a large heart which opens as the coffin is pushed into it and closes around it as it goes through. Suddenly a man starts to laugh. When asks ll when he says “I’m just imagining my funeral. I’m a gynecologist”. Upon hearing this a man faints. When he is revived and asked what happened he simply replies. “I’m a proctologist.”

I was at the Dynamite in Toronto, they had most of that building full, according to cagematch it was 6,700 people. So, if the average is 2,400, that means the the other Dynamites were holding even less for this 6,700 to bring the average up to 2,400.

Saw a poll on KZfaq from Tap Out Corner that asked which of the 4 would you like to see come to WWE. Out of 230k votes, Aj Lee got 30% of the vote, Jericho 8% Moxley 48%, and MJF 15%. I know it adds up to 101%, just have it down as the poll says.

In reality, I think everyone hoped that AEW would be another resting show to watch other than WWE. No one was hoping it would fail, but the first telling sign was that horrible battle royal when you have a legless man, baby oil man and Pockets etc involved. The fact that Billy Gunn or Tommy Dreamer even bought into that bullshit makes them even dumber.
