The neck stretching and wrist wringing was already badass enough so he didn't need a huge entrance. Imo Benoit from 2000 - 2004 was his prime as a badass. He still was badass after but he just wasn't booked the same and he obviously deteriorated.

A problem that took me out of AEW was how they can act like they know it's fake and are embarrassed it's fake so to prevent their humiliations they go "Hey we know it's fake so we'll perform tongue in cheek with the fakeness." It's frustrating. Movies are fake, stage shows are fake, etc. but we enjoy and get sucked into them all the same if they're done well. Same with wrestling. What also annoys me is it bleeds over to the one's who are trying to put on believable performances. AEW has become WWE-lite sports entertainment... or "Cirque du Soleil on steroids" or whatever they referred to it as. Everything I was lead to believe they would be is almost all gone. I was so excited back in the first few months but the excitement slowly drained away as I realized what was happening.

Yes! All the nudge-nudge-wink-wink stuff in AEW makes it unwatchable. It's jarringly disjointed from segment to segment, like they can't decide whether they're making a serious wrestling show or an SNL parody of a wrestling show. I guess they figure it's better to hide behind goofiness and comic self-awareness than to take themselves seriously and risk being exposed as talentless hacks.
@giuliano7959
@giuliano7959 3 жыл бұрын
true, it's because they're not confident in themselves to take themselves seriously as wrestlers nor should they be, so they act like they don't care and it's all a joke, if they had what was required be it the look or charisma they wouldn't be acting like this. It's a defence mechanism imo. Same thing with Matt hardy.

So basically despite the fans knowing everything about the business, despite all the shoots you can find on the internet, despite many of the wrestlers being on social media, when the show is on, the objective should still be the same as it always was; get people to believe in what you're doing. The wrestlers nowadays have the mentality that since everybody knows the ins and outs, they don't have to try anymore. WRONG!

You're exactly right, all of today's wrestlers are like cardboard cutouts. They all look the same, talk the same, act the same, and have the same moves. None of those over the top characters like there used to be. It's kind of the same issue I have with the UFC today. In the old days, you had different fighting styles going head to head. Can a kickboxer beat a wrestler? Can a boxer beat a judoka? Can a sumo wrestler beat a streetfighter? Now everyone has the same training, moves, and skillset. The fights are boring as fuck, and more often than not end up as lay and pray, hugging, snoozefests.

Or, heels go over after doing something dastardly. But, ALWAYS using their finishing moves that actual “finishes” the match. That’s what’s lost on today’s wrestling. Everything is scripted. I keep thinking about the first half of this when I think of the Cody vs Ogogo match, there was a full story to be made around the kick out of the punch, Cody spends the rest of the match suffering, maybe folds while giving a suplex, in the end starts working on the right arm, finished ogogo with an arm submission, but keeps it in after he’s tapped, Ogogo is then injured for a while, loses power in his punch, and means people kicking out can be more believable. Even if it’s dumb that a single punch leads people to convulsions while Spanish flys and Canadian destroyers 20 minutes into a match are a 2 count

One of the big problems is that nobody conmits to a gimmick or persona anymore. They're "actors" who play different roles depending on where they are working. There're honorable exceptions (Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Jon Moxley, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Rosemary, Eric Yung...) who commit wholeheartedly to the character they're supposed to portray. Those people more often than not react the way they are supposed to react. Then you have a lot of people with no personality of their own and no real character traits either because they are used to just do moves for the sake of doing them, overreacting and doing bad comedy of extreme violence to elicit a reaction from the 500 people who see them at the high school gym or the bingo hall or even worse, for the 40-50 people that see them "perform" in their backyard. The crisis of the NWA and its downfall in the early 90s was the origin, especially WCW and ECW splitting from it in 93 and 94. ECW created a subculture, WCW and WWF kinda followed up and when there was no more WCW and no more ECW something had to replace them, and the independent scene began to grow. When WWE had to go PG the underground indy culture took over.

We went from the Benoit Guerrero era to the John Cena era. Benoit and Guerrero combination of Charisma and strict auras influenced those locker rooms back in the mid 2000s when I grew up watching wrestling. Everybody in the locker room with them wanted to be like them and have that same intensity (in wrestling of course). Then you have John Cena as who I know went through OVW and Jim found a great talent there but we can't lie to ourselves and saying that he has the same intensity as the stars I just mentioned. Cena comes across very hoaky sometimes. He then gets pushed as a top guy and the others performers in the back in a way now have him as their role model and locker room leader. So now you have this generation of superstars looking up to the likes of a John Cena who has a great promo in him but comes across hoaky from time to time and today's generation unfortunately would have learnt those kind of traits along the way hence why we have went from serious, Charismatic hard working performers that cared for the craft to a more not care for that kind of style approach which is shame. What Benoit done outside of the ring was unforgivable but I feel every Wrestling company, especially AEW can do with an authorative figure like Benoit in their locker room to give them a kick in the ass and a reality check.

What pisses me off are the people who regurgitate opinions from Meltzer and reddit who call this guy "the best wrestler in the world ever", which he clearly isn't on any metric: talking, drawing money, physical prowess, size, physique, match quality (which is albeit more subjective), and overall presentation. There are SO many people who trounce Kenny in any one, or multiple, of those above metrics.

People really need to separate WWE from a wrestling show. It would make way more sense if you do that. WWE Raw and Smackdown are TV SHOWS. They're sold as tv shows, and celebrated as TV shows, hence the "new season" nonsense. "Longest episodic tv show ever!" Once you can separate the two, one should be able to see what to do to make a Wrestling Show, instead of recreating the TV show.

I miss blading in WWE. I also think its so dumb how they can only hit their opponents with a chair in the back. Anytime they swing for the head, you know a reversal is coming. Why can't they bring blade jobs back and get special made chairs that are made out of a super lightweight metal that has a good sound to it when hitting someone? That way they can go back to doing chair shots to the head, concussion free, and make matches look believable again.
