Totally correct. When they started, there wasn't enough good talent on the open market to fill out a roster. But then the WWE started releasing people and AEW started upgrading what they had.
@Clubber-Slang

that's what I was thinking too, cuz on any sports game whether it's football, baseball whatever, I always put together my own formula of the team rated the worst + salary cap deficit etc. and takeover the worst team to turn them around lol. Expansion draft style as you stated, it's the best of what's available and try to better every year moving forward.

My analogy exactly! This is why cody moved on as he felt he was main event and Tony didn't agree as now he has legit proven main event level talent at his disposal,bottom line is aew is a business and Tony has to make decisions based on that and now bigger name talent has come on board he needs to remove some of the ones he no longer needs,maybe his way of working isn't as cold as wwe have been in the past with releases or not renewing contracts but even when sugar coated and done in a nice manner there is no easy way to let someone go

I remember when Janela was talking trash about Enzo before AEW even had their TV deal, and Enzo tracked him down and confronted him. That was the biggest thing that ever happened to Janela. I guess he thought he could just talk bad about Enzo and Enzo would just take it, but Enzo punked him out when he caught him in public. The funny part is you can go back and watch those videos of the Enzo and Janela confrontation, and all the AEW fans were defending Janela, and saying Janela would destroy Enzo, which shows how delusional they are, because the video tells a different story. It is like the AEW fans were living in an alternate reality, because Janela ran from Enzo. Cornette even did a video about the Janela Enzo situation. I don't remember what concert it was, but Enzo somehow found out he was at a concert and bought a ticket just to confront Janela. I am guessing Janela posted about the concert on Twitter, and Enzo knew he was gonna be there, so he bought a ticket. Really kinda funny when you think about it.

Some had to leave at some point. We have seen from WWE in the last few years that there is such a thing as having too much talent....the difference with AEW is other than the decent wrestlers they packed out the rest of the mid-lower card with mediocre talent. What works on the indies doesn't necessarily work on TV, which is why these guys haven't been on TV much for 18 months. The other problem now is AEW's roster looks like another WWE spin off show.

Honestly, it seems like AEW has followed a lot of the criticism over the past couple years. They've chosen not to re-sign a lot of more controversial wrestlers (while avoiding directly firing them), finally given big pushes to homegrown favorites, and have generally drifted away from the overt silliness (Broken Matt and the musical sketch) they were criticized for early on. Even the women's division has started to take shape.

They've needed a talent scout(s) from the start, pretty sure Tony just got a list of suggestions from all 4 EVPs and first page were longshots, guys like Lethal, Jacob Fatu, Hammerstone, etc and then past that was their buddies. Even volunteered to do kind of test run with a list of suggestions. Its not just Omega and the Bucks fault, Cody clearly had a bigger hand there. Its not a shocker Cody bailed on AEW once it was obvious he couldn't just cost on his dad's legacy and stay in the top 5. Cody arguably wasn't even top 10 when he left.
