I’ve always loved Rey as a wrestler but that part made me respect him so much more

That was very honorable of Rey. Made sure his wife didn’t give him a pass just because they were on tv.

This! That man has so much heart. It touched me and made me appreciate and respect Rey so much more than I already did. That’s the way we should be. When we fuck up and hurt those we love, it’s so important to take accountability and do/be better. Lead with love and respect. Rey’s documentary made me smile and cry, several times over. I love that he’s not too proud to keep it real.

That's why he was suspended for 30 days for violating the wellness policy I remember the press release.

I think I read somewhere that Rey was one of the top merch sellers in the WWE during his heyday because of all the masks they’d sell. But then again Bischoff has always been pretty up front at how bad WCW always was about merchandising. I can understand not being up to WWF/Es level on the merch side but it’s forever insane to me how JCP and WCW really never made a big push into it and thinking how much money as a company had to have been left on the table over the years by not making a push into it. Even companies like TNA and AEW have been good on getting merch revenue streams out there.

Definitely. Love that match with Eddie at Havoc 97. Rey also had an awesome 2/3 falls match in ECW with Juvi and great matches with Dean Malenko in WCW

Hell yeah that Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero match at Halloween havoc is one of my top five favorite matches of all time

Yes, even though I was about 5 or 6 and not remembering everything from back then, that's one of the things I really loved about the Ruthless Aggression era, it seemed that everyone had a chance to be the main guy. And with me being of Mexican descent, I am very biased towards Rey but he's my favorite wrestler of all time due to his charisma, and his personality. Even when he wasn't in WWE, I don't think he complained once about his treatment.

Yes, WWE has IP of Undertaker, Stone Cold and Mysterio, but they don't have IP on a black hat, a Zamboni, or a mask. So if they are able to break these characters down to one symbolic element, they can have sketches like that and make them commercially available.

Even guys like Fenix and Hijo del Vikingo who are able to pull insane looking shit off can't do it like Rey

These artworks are awesome, but as soon as you start selling the art, then whomever has their likeness depicted needs to be in on it as well. The obvious way around it - whether you want to make Tshirts, calenders, desktop wallpapers and yes, NFTs -is to just feature Corny and Brian in these and then simply allude to a certain wrestler. Like Corny wearing Kane's mask, or Undertaker's hat, or drive a big Zamboni.

Yeah you can definitely make the case for Rey being the best masked wrestler ever. Obviously Mick Foley and Kane have their hats in the ring as well, and they definitely forged their own path. I suppose in Mexico, we have to mention Mil Mascaras and obviously the granddaddy of them all, El Santo. But in terms of sheer volume of people that knows him with the mask, Rey Mysterio takes it.

That's a bit of a stretch. He definitely helped redefine, but there were plenty of people well below 6 feet before he was even in the business. Tully Blanchard was maybe 5'9", Ivan Putski was like 5'6", Dynamite Kid & Tiger Mask were nowhere near 6 feet and a whole list of other guys from the territory days. I get what you're saying, but c'mon, I like Rey, he's the easiest guy to cheer for, but if you're going to make your statement, I'd counter with he's also the reason guys like Marco Stunt got an opportunity as opposed to "wrestlers under 6' wouldn't have a job now", and honestly many of those guys SHOULDN'T have jobs.

@@Clubber-Slang well Jim cornette explained exactly the difference between Marco stunt and Rey Mysterio and you know that there's a night and day difference. But the difference between Rey Mysterio and the rest of those guys that you mentioned that were under six feet tall was the fact that race stood out because he brought an entirely different style of professional wrestling to the National spotlight in ECW and in WCW while people like Tully Blanchard and Ivan putski as great as they were, did not revolutionize a lot of what you see today. Rey did moves that nobody dared to do or didn't even know what to call on the announcing table. Dynamite Kid is a standout but he was not even allowed to show his full potential of what he learned in Japan against tiger mask in the WWF because we all know that when you get there to the WWF or WWE, they limit your moveset for the fear of injury. As far as I'm concerned Mysterio revolutionized this sport so that people under six feet tall did have jobs. Just like how I can equally say that someone like too cold Scorpio introduced a high-flying style that nobody saw in America until he introduced a lot of it

@@paulkersey1007 him being so successful helped remove some of the stigma of smaller guys, but again, to say people under 6 foot have jobs because of him is too much. Benoit and Guerrero had just as much or more to do with that honestly. My introduction to Rey was the ECW Psichosis matches and they were in fact awesome. My introduction to 2 Cold was as JYDs mystery partner in WCW in like 1990, but as someone who watched just as much World Class, Georgia and Florida Championship, AWA, Continental, Mid South/UWF as WWF as a kid, I've seen a ton of people come through doing things before they became mainstream, but the saying goes it's not who does it 1st, it's who does it best and even then it's really who does it in front of the most people. WWF made it out as no-one had slammed Andre before Mania 3, when Hogan himself had done it several times over the years. But for a lot of people, especially kids, and this is when forget about the internet, not everyone even had cable hooked up yet, it was their 1st exposure to such things. So, short version, Rey did help re-define wrestling, I just disagree to your extent that without him guys like Gargano wouldn't have a job.

@@Clubber-Slang Well sir, I appreciate the civil discourse however, an example I can illustrate is, before 2 Cold introduced the 450 in WCW, no one saw it in mainstream American pro wrestling. So for people who use that hold whether it be finisher or as a part of their move set, they owe 2 Cold a debt of gratitude. I have watched Rey since AAA and the moves he did, no one on America has seen on a mainstream basis. He didn't just bring moves, he brought over and entire style. When he debuted at the greatest American Bash in 96. The only other person prior to him doing anything innovative overseas bringing it to America was Jushin thunder liger. So Rey did much more than most people give him credit for. Benoit war not a high flyer. Guerrero came after Rey to WCW. Ecw doesn't count because 2 reasons: 1. Even though they introduced lucha libre and all these other things that were considered pro wrestling they are best known for their hardcore style. 2. ECW at the time was a small local independent promotion that just so happens to get limited television exposure. All I'm trying to say is that Mysterio is old a lot of gratitude for what he did because he became the first successful smaller guy who made it and he showed a style of wrestling that Americans have never seen before and on top of that it was only kept in Mexico until he became the breakout star.

it still made no logical sense for WCW to take off all the luchador's masks. but it's a testament to the culture and to Rey Mysterio that it never affected his popularity when he came to WWE. if there was ever a person in real life that defined a mask not by its identity but it's accomplishments, that would be Rey

I'm surprised people aren't as vocal about Travis being gone as much as they did Last. Travis' artwork is what in part made this channel. Went from Brian's channel to Jim's own channel for the shows recap vids. The clips were good but if you already heard the podcast you don't need to hear it again. But early on the thumbnails attracted so many people, new listeners attracted to his funny and creative artwork, to check out the show. Travis gave it a flair and also a brief summary of the subject of the vid in one quick pic. It was truly a stroke of genius melding the 2 for a, originally, good but nondescript recap channel for a podcast. I know Konnan's crew were asking if Travis would do the thumbs on K100. I know a couple of other podcasts and a few lower level/new/unknowns also wanted to use Travis but he stood loyal to Jim. I hope he is studying and bettering himself and it isn't about money or any other issue. I think Travis' absence is just as glaring, perhaps more, as its the first thing people see of the vids/show especially to non fans/people just going through vids on KZfaq who don't know the show. Now it looks like good art but nothing special. Modern images that say nothing to anyone just cartoon pics. Travis' stuff told a bit of a story, gave a little mystery to entice someone to check out the video. But also a friendly inviting image that made you interested. This new stuff is good but doesn't do anything to make someone want to check out what it is all about. I would think as many people as complained about Last's absence should feel the same if not more over Travis' absence.

As Nate says, he had youth on his side. But his incredible moveset hot him over and the mask made him a merch monster. Come to think of it, the WCW had some epic careers in WWE. Obviously Eddie would have been a lot longer, if not for his untimely demise. Chris Benoit...yeah, we understand what happened there. But Chris Jericho, Booker T, Eric Bischoff, Chavo Guerrero, Shane Helms all had great careers when they made the jump. And that's not even taking into account that Stone Cold, Undertaker, Big Show were WCW guys before

@@HkFinn83 sure there's a ton of options in NYC, but if we're just talking the quality of your average mom and pop that sells it by the slice then there's good pizza places and bad ones just like anywhere else. I had Lombardi's in NYC which is more traditional style pizza and thought it was great: it's a world class restaurant. Then later I had like a $2 slice of NY style pizza and thought it was mediocre and greasy. It's even worse the further upstate you go. I went to a college like 2 hours from NYC and the NY style pizza up there was very hit or miss.

Yeah, Paul got so caught up doing creative and booking that he didn't pay enough attention to the financial side. That's actually very common in small businesses/start-ups.

@@misterx6276 unfortunately your right every wrestling company has it’s pro & cons. The Cons was the financial problems The Pros Freedom, Exposure, ECW gave Rey Mysterio, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, & Eddie Guerrero their starts in America.

Because unlike today Rey actually wrestled like a small guy fighting a big guy. He would always use the psychology of using his quickness to tire the big guy out.
