You could see naito didn't give a fuck and was preserving his body for the upcoming G1 and can't say I blame him why should he get himself hurt for a fan base that isn't his and only wrestles for two times a year at most

Yes, but let’s just remember he got it right once. My favorite match of all time. He gave Hogan vs Rock 5 stars. That negates his entire thought process. Athletically, that match was terrible. Dave bases his rating off of flips and dips, but on that night…..he would not, he COULD NOT, deny the power of the Hullkamania brother.

@@gi79304the AEW partnership is the only thing NJPW has left. The reason so many older, beat up New Japan main eventers keep showing up on AEW television is because that’s all NJPW has left. They’ve booked themselves into a corner with their main event matches. They used to lean on Jay White, Okada & Ospreay, then for a brief moment were leaning on Mercedes Mone, and now they’ve all been signed by Tony Khan. It’s been over a year now that fans have been calling for NJPW to start pushing Shota Umino and/or David Finlay.

I'm going to ask the same question I've been asking. If the centerpoint of New Japan's booking has been that Mox took the belt out of the company and Naito has to redeem himself, then why did he win the title back in America, in front of an audience that hadn't seen that promotion and wasn't there to see this match?
@SquaredCirclePodcast
@SquaredCirclePodcast Ай бұрын
Because of Tony Khan and wrestling politics. The IWGP title got defended on a NJPW show once and then Naito comes out for the challenge and it's made official in the US. I agree that the redemption story should have been in Japan to get back for the company in front of the fans that pay for their tickets to the events. But, having the match defended on US soil is - to me - a control thing. TK like control & likes to remind people all the "good" he's done for the fans by giving them dream matches on home soil so they don't support the other company with a subscription to NJPW World. It was even admitted that Mox winning the title was to be used as a prop & give him the grand slam champion participation award. But the good thing is now Naito got the title back and the NJPW fans gave him a standing ovation up on seeing him. Hope this answer helps, somewhat. I do agree with your question. ❤

As someone who was an unrepentant died in the wool Shield mark who liked Ambrose believe it or not it was the fact that he was able to sell and take the heats in their tag matches. It was mainly him or Seth that did (keep Roman strong) but I dunno, he had good facials and really seemed to be able to take an ass kicking long enough to let one of the other two hit the big move and get the win. Also he was pretty good in the promos as the radical zealot with a cause (justice in their case) so it all kind of compounded to give the impression he was legitimately the toughest of the three. Because he could absorb the most punishment and not get beat. It's too bad it's clear now from subsequent interviews that he hated the promo/character concept and probably thought he looked like a stupid pussy the whole time and wished he was just no selling everyone's offense and killing them. Say what you will about him but the breakup of the Shield and the fact that he was supposed to be positioned as a starter feud for Seth until Roman was ready to pay it off and he got the most over of the two as a babyface shows most people bought him as a sympathetic face too. He CAN be good, he just has to be put in a box where he's forced to do stuff he doesn't want to.
@hiddensword9387
@hiddensword9387 Ай бұрын
Prefer him than I do Rollins. Rollins just runs around the ring doing athletic stunts and no selling. Ambrose was really good in the WWE as a shield member, they turned him into a goof when he left and went solo though. TBH I don't think Moxley is any more offensive in the ring than most of the AEW wrestlers, Cesaro is phony looking as well. My opinion is, Jim has more of a bias against Moxley due to his GCW and Nick Gage affiliation.

@@hiddensword9387 So, here's the thing. Seth Rollins was my favorite wrestler for years. He's the most talented wrestler I had ever seen live. He had a really good character. When he stopped being the Monday Night Messiah and became this character, I lost interest in him. He's still talented. Rewind, they said Dean Ambrose was crazy, but that's because why? He talked to a potted plant and added too much sugar to his coffee? He's got a face for radio. He doesn't have a body that says, hey I work out. Seth has matches that make sense and Ambrose has none.

As an NJPW fan this convinced me to give up on the Forbidden Door every year, if that's the case who are we marketing to?
@SquaredCirclePodcast
@SquaredCirclePodcast Ай бұрын
They are marketing to those still within the hardcore bubble. They aren't leaving as they pay $50 per PPV which adds up. And hey there 👋 fellow NJPW fan! But totally understand. The vision for 'Forbidden Door' is lost. But hey, at least they now give credit to Tanahashi for coining the phrase! 🤷🤦‍♀️

Naito was one of my favorite guys in NJPW. Back when Omega was fighting okada there, I was a giant fan. The style must be hell on their bodies because he was moving like a 60-year-old man in his match against moxley. Moxley was obviously doing slow, plumber, moxley things... But naito just looked completely out of place. It's rough to see.

To be fair, Tony probably intends to bring Naito in soon. He was one of New Japan’s top stars when they were getting hot a few years ago and that’s all Tony needs, no matter how past his prime Naito is. Fans have a natural bias towards Moxley because he started out on the indies, so they overlook his sloppiness in the ring. Its the same phenomenon that causes people to cheer the Sandman like a god and chant “you can’t wrestle” at Randy Orton. But the novelty of Jon Moxley as an “unappreciated” WWE star can’t sustain him forever. The fact that they even had to put an outside promotion’s title on him shows how unfocused AEW’s booking is and how little has changed from when he was in WWE. He played second fiddle there and he still does in AEW.

Moxley needs to go to rehab again. Rehab on how to fucking wrestle, which believe it or not he actually used to be able to do years ago. Not particularly well, but compared to whatever-the-fuck he's doing now he might as well have been Bret Hart.

I don't think Moxley or Seth Rollins were ever viewed as or intended to be main event stars when the Shield was formed. I think VKM saw them like Dolph Ziggler, mid-card job guys that can work and will help make Roman look strong on the build up to his eventual solo run after leaving them behind. Because the Roman push was so obvious and fans rejected it so strongly, the guys that were supposed to be buried coming out of the Shield ended up more popular than Roman was and the WWE ran with it a bit. They figured out Mox was trash early on and let him walk (pushed him out the door honestly), and they turned Seth into Singalong Dolph trying to cover for the fact he's a charisma black hole.
@SportPhilosophies
@SportPhilosophies Ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. They were clearly the lower card guys in the Shield, now one is living his death match self destructive dream for wrestling hipsters, while the other is being overrated and over pushed in WWE with no discernible character and a nonsense ‘gimmick’.

Brian, you're wrong! Tony Khan's booking does help AEW! You're thinking "help" means garner interest, increase ticket sales, improve rating, get bigger buy rates. "Help" really means sign more wrestlers! Especially if they're other wrestlers that might means something to someone else, especially if they mean more somewhere else! Look at AEW the past five years and call me a liar!
