AEW fans who are critical of Cornette don’t understand that the AEW promise was to be DIFFERENT from the WWE, and to be a more realistic, old school version of modern wrestling based on what worked in classic wrestling from like, idk, the days of Dusty Rhodes. So it makes it even more glaring when you have things like time limits and win/loss stats but then there are rope breaks in No DQ matches and non-legal tag partners allowed in and out of the ring whenever. And there are barely any in-ring promos unless it’s Cody, and there are very few video promos unless it’s about Cody, and a lot of the entrances are weak unless it’s that extraordinary Cody entrance. It would seem that he gives himself the best stuff - something a McMahon would be heavily criticized for. You know you’re never going to get a creative AEW gimmick because everybody is coming in with whatever they had from the indie scene. You have 5’2 guys no-selling and jumping around doing flips after getting beat up by your biggest heel tag team for 10 minutes. The women’s division is worthless in its current state. There’s all this criticism of WWE involving race and diversity, but AEW is mostly small white dudes, and 50% of their non-white talent were thrown into Jericho’s stable. The announcer kept counting the last couple of minutes of last Wednesday’s main event between Mox and Pac, which is something they didn’t do during Jericho and Allin even though the matches ended close to the same time during hour two. They shove down your throat that this Aubrey is the best referee they have, and they put so much attention on her that she almost overshadows what’s happening during the match because her work is being put over in a more direct way than the wrestlers in the ring. They make silly decisions like having Darby Allin tap out to Jericho after the entire story of that match was that Allin wasn’t going to stop fighting. Him passing out or forced into a pin would have been a way more satisfying finish for his character in the long run than just having Swagger punch him and then he just gives up. And then any given match (especially the tag team matches) has so many special leaping/jumping/diving spots that half of them you forget about a minute after the match is over so why even go through the trouble when one or two really great spots would be more impactful, and the camera only catches half of the spots anyway because of weak camera work thus far. And everybody ignores when several botches occur because yay it’s AEW, so I didn’t see Private Part trip all over themselves and get blown up against the Lucha Bros several times during that so-obviously-choreographed match. There are so many things to complain about, but Cornette is getting called out because he’s being as critical of this hot new promotion as he has been of WWE for YEARS. It’s like WWE is the old wife that got old and homely, and AEW is their new hot mistress, and they’re in the honeymoon stage, and Cornette is saying she’s not that pretty. And half the time they go “but what about THIS” and bring up another dumb thing that also didn’t work back in the day and they think that’s a good argument lol. Things that Cornette says worked in wrestling existed in the 90s and part of the 2000s and are still around in pieces today. He’s not saying wrestling needs to resemble the 70s all over again. It just needs to be taken seriously, have good characters that people care about, and maintain some consistency. AEW is not some Savior of the business - it’s just a slightly better version of RAW and Smackdown. Jericho deserves 4x as much as he’s making now because his contribution is a huge part of why AEW will exist for a bit. A video game is coming, a second show, women’s tag belts, yeah yeah yeah. Focus on making Dynamite as flawless as possible - right now their viewership is at a similar number to what they were making fun of NXT having four weeks ago.

10 months on I know but I've heard from some AEW fans that believe being too 'sports based' would pigeonhole them as an American New Japan and they say that'd only ever appeal to hardcore wrestling fans and would stop them from growing. What these AEW fans were saying was 'give the casual wrestling fan familiar sports entertainment ala main roster wwe but keep them there with NXT workrate.' I think that's stupid but it's at least what some AEW fans think.
@CarloisBuriedAlive
@CarloisBuriedAlive 3 жыл бұрын
SensiofRabbitude the problem with this is they simply cannot achieve the realistic sports presentation, which is exactly what they promised at the beginning of Dynamite btw especially when comparing themselves to WWE, because the majority of their roster lack the fundamentals for the classic, old school wrestling style with in-ring psychology, but then their video game indie style that most of them know how to do is far too out there and lacks mainstream appeal and forces them into a weird bizarro comedy schlocky corner, and then you have Cody trying to turn the company into a modern Dusty-led WCW, and they currently have all male champions that were very recently working for Vince McMahon and accustomed to that style, and then you have Tony Khan who is essentially a rich mega fan, so there’s no wonder why this product feels like a weird Frankenstein’s monster fanfic of what pro wrestling is. They can’t be at the level of New Japan which is a style that doesn’t have huge appeal to an American audience anyway (would definitely have appeal but just not huge appeal) and yet bringing the slums of the bingo hall Arthouse to mainstream prime time television is not doing them any favors. In order to be a subversive, competitive company that brought something different to the table in modern wrestling, they needed to either commit completely to the old school style and bring back strong kayfabe and strong attention to detail, or be a wacky ECW type environment that had a TV-MA rating. And I’m not even getting into the fact that 40% of the audience are rough hardcore indie show types and 40% are social justice “inclusivity is everything” types that will directly clash with each other and bring down the product in their own ways, which leaves the 20% of normal fans to defend and promote this piece of trash online because they’re entirely too hopeful despite the massive problems they’ve ignored for 10 months with no signs of stopping.

I remember a woman on the first tough enough that pretty much said she didn't care about wrestling and was planning to use the WWF to get into Playboy. She somehow got past the preliminaries and into the house. First one gone admittedly but that they put her through when she admitted on camera that wrestling was her ticket to playboy, was ridiculous.

You think Steve or taker or Rock would have went out there and did that finish? Fuck no, they would have said no let's change this. But that's the issue, Seth just says yes to whatever because he is getting paid and Roman it's obvious he need to just be let loose and be himself and stop scripting his fucking promos.

Is Jim talking about another Seth Rollins? "He can talk, looks great and his work is impeccable. His matches are excellent." Sorry Jim but NO! He has an annoying whining voice that talks nonsense about "burning it down" all the time. He acts and talks like a heel more than the babyface WWE portrays him as. He has no unique look about him and his work has long become largely a stale mix of brawling, suicide dives, a falcon arrow that never finishes anyone off and curb stomping for the finish.

ive never seen rollins do a promo that didn't look like a 3rd grader trying very hard the matches of Tyler black against aj styles were incredible but they were 10 years ago and yes I think Omega comes across far more able than Rollins but I gotta say cornette is a genius. i spent a year waiting for aew and I find myself going crazy looking for nwa powerrr on Tuesday long live southern rasslin long live nwa powerrr

Seth Rollins is so overrated. Stop making excuses for him being told what to do. A good performer makes the best of a bad situation. He's an internet darling....he couldn't lace the boots of the pound for pound greatest wrestler in the world right now....AJ STYLES!! Please with seth. And just because wwe grosses the most money doesn't mean shit when you are the by product of being the only game in town since the demise of wcw. No, dont give me TNA either. They were mostly a joke.

So a closed fist is ok to cornball but blind tag no? Punches are the fakest looking thing in there

Punches look bad these days because the wrestlers aren't being trained properly in the basics. They just want to do flips and shit before learning how to make their basic stuff look realistic.

I want to see Joey Janela and Marko Stunt as the new Midnight Express with Orange Cassidy as there manager and Kenny Omega and Joey Ryan as the new Rock & Roll Express
@resop3
@resop3 4 жыл бұрын
I had an idea for Janela: Have him wrestle on the B show for a couple months against job guys and have his work "look better" from week to week. Finally have him challenge KO again with this angle. "When I first wrestled you, it took you 20 minutes to beat me in a hard core match. After that match, I heard a lot of snickering backstage and online that I was using hard core as a crutch because I couldn't wrestle. So, I wrestled you in a regular match and you smoked me. This made me realize that it was true. I am a self-taught guy who never got the fundamentals down properly. So, I got a coach and I have been trying to get it right. I now have a good record, good enough for a title shot. But I want to wrestle you so that I can prove that I am a real wrestler." Then for the match, Joey comes down with his coach, Mike Quackenbush.

Wasnt he though the biggest star as far as ROH to WWE crossovering success ? As Black he was ROH champion a few times. There is Kevin Steen but as far title holding he is running behind.

Sometimes I feel Cornette totally ignores Omega's New Japan run. We all know when Vince can't sign someone he will try to create a knock off. Although Seth is good he is not great and he is a Omega and Finn knock off. He added their movesets to his. Omega even mentioned it to him when he started doing the knee strikes. Seth matches are not better than Omegas and neither was his persona. Now Cornette slams Omega for referring wrestling to a performance, but credits Seth who does the same thing. I love Jim but just be consistent.

Jim I love you man. I've been a fan since the 80s and played tennis in high school because of you BUT I have to say I think Seth Rollins and Kenny Omega are compareable in fact I personally think Kenny is a bigger star right now. I will say Seth had the potential to be a bigger star than Kenny but he won't reach those heights in WWE with the crap he is given IMO of course

Took me about 20 seconds to google "seth rollins fetish wrestling" and click the 1st result to see that Rollins abomination of wrestling. Cornette you are so biased in favor of Rollins and even more biased against Omega it's laughable and undermines your own credibility.

I enjoy Jim for his old stories and his blunt takes with no apologies..... BUT Jim I get sick and tired of your played out SAME comment of "I don't know what happened recently... I didn't watch SmackDown... I didn't watch Raw.....I don't watch this I don't watch that"....YET you somehow when it's convenient to get your own opinion across all of a sudden you have all the answers and know all LMAO! How do you say you don't know anything about Seth Rollins promos yet you somehow know all about his work!? Oooooh yeah....he's not Tyler Black anymore Jim!!! On an unrelated note...how's that round wheel and fire turned out??? Old shit is all you are an expert on ... either educate yourself on today's product or stop being "an expert" on it. #anythinginaboxisover
