I had a friend, a white lucha wrestler who went by the name "Juantastic." I asked him why it wasn't "Juantastico," which I thought worked better. He told me it was originally that, but a Florida ring announcer misunderstood and called him "one testicle!" My friend passed away a few weeks ago. I miss him.

@@hugrad99 why, thank you. We had been out of touch for a few years, but it gave me some existential dread for a week or so, as we had been close once. But I told the story because I thought it was funny. Perhaps I was mistaken. Either way, thank you.

Cornette is spot on about Attitude era. The big angles like the Austin McMahon rivalry worked so well because they were based on real heat. When I was a teenager, I believed that Austin was really out to kill or at least maim his boss. Even knowing it's scripted, the guys always looked like they were going to fight each other and not stop until someone was crippled. In 1997, Austin and Bret were both jacked and shredded, and both legit looked like they wanted to beat each other up. But, I re-watched all the Raw episodes from 98-99 not too long ago, original broadcasts from USA Network, and I had to admit that a lot of the under card stuff aged poorly... sexual chocolate, really??? A lot of Russo's ideas were in very poor taste, juvenile humor at best. Austin and Bret both came up through the territories. I believe wrestlers (I refuse to call them "sports entertainers") learned a lot more by learning how to get heat from those smaller territory crowds. Bret once said that Stampede was a tough crowd to please. Watch his old matches from early 80s in Stampede and you'll see how far he progressed from his start. Wrestlers learned how to work and get heat on themselves or their opponents. Most of all, it was presented as a legitimate contest, fake/scripted or not. Austin vs. Hart WM 13 remains one of my favorite matches of the 90s. I'm so glad to hear Cornette's commentary on it 23 years on!

WrestleMania X Owen Hart vs Bret Hart was my favorite match of all time because of original match idea, later changed night before the match to turn Owen Heel for years to come. Bret says original would of made Owen Baby because of his high flying move set. But, making Owen the Villain really paid off, incredible heel. Stone cold vs Bret is 2nd fav. Heel storyline. Love this match and it made everything very interesting making everyone on roster a star through this era. Love the show! Thanks!

I've gotta disagree about AE. While Austin was the distilled essence of AE, the various midcard guys like the New Age Outlaws and the rough-and-tumble stuff that they were involved in were just as important. AE WWE put on entertaining shows from logo to logo. I wouldn't be listening to Cornette if he were wrong about everything, but the massive horsepill that Cornette needs to swallow is that he was never in charge of wrestling at its peak in cultural relevance. Beyond the death of ad-lib in favor of scripts, the biggest problem with wrestling today is that people are trying to figure out how to get people interested in wrestling again while handling Russo and Bischoff, the brains behind the Monday Night Wars, as a couple of buffoons who just got lucky because Cornette and Meltzer (who AEW is custom-catered to) said so.

Did Jim ever meet the Dynamite Kid? I'd assume he was a fan of his work.

They probably never crossed paths when Dynamite was in Stampede and Japan Corny was in Memphis Mid South and World Class. When Bulldogs were in WWF Midnights were tearing up NWA. Unless Dynamite came back to visit Brett and Davey when Corny was actually in WWF this is probably the only way they'd meet.

@@johngallagher72 That's what I'm figuring. I know Dynamite came to a UK show in the early 2000's, but I Cornette wasn't touring Europe at that point. I just seem to recall him raving at the talents of Dynamite and Tiger Mask.
