Another thing to notice. No one napping on the floor. No one sleeping in the corner. No one hiding under the ring. No one gets out of the way while a new entrant gets 30 seconds to shine. Plenty of continuous shots from the hard camera vs 10000 camera cuts a minute.

Vince did not want to admit wrestling exists outside his company. Flair was incredible this night.

Said it before but I’ll say it again … Bobby Heenan gave the finest performance on the mic that night! Arguably in company history!! For the entire show he was absolute gold. Monsoon obviously was great as well.

I've watched this Royal Rumble so many times over the years that all I had to do was listen to Corny and I knew exactly what was happening without having to watch. Fantastic Rumble! My all-time favorite!

This was the last big goodbye of the Hogan/Flair glory era. Almost every big name of that period was in this match. This felt like one big celebration of the 80’s boom period. Watching this royal rumble match just made me realize how good things used to be back there and how much we took it for granted.

Roddy's mere appearance after Flair clears the ring of some big names and Flair's realisation that it is indeed Piper on his way to the ring is pure gold....Also remember that when the VHS was released of this show they edited out the boos when Hogan eliminated Sid and replaced them with cheers.

The 1992 Royal Rumble is truly a masterpiece. The storytelling, the legendary star power, the high stakes of the match, the finish, Heenan and Gorilla at their best on commentary, it was a perfect storm that made this one of my favorite wrestling PPVs ever. Unfortunately, this event, Wrestlemania 8 and Summerslam 1992 were the last chapters of WWF’s Golden Era. The big names had moved on, the younger guys like Bret and Shawn weren’t quite there yet as for as being big draws, and the WWF wouldn’t fully recover their popularity until late 1997 with the rise of Steve Austin.

The greatest Royal Rumble match ever. The booking, the talent, the commentary by Heenan and Monsoon, the fact that wrestling was still big at the time, Flair being fresh in the WWF but also with a big reputation, and the fact that the Royal Rumble format was familiar enough that we all knew how it worked (except Randy Savage! :P) yet unfamiliar enough that a lot of Royal Rumble booking was still new and unpredictable. More than any other period, 1992 WWF and WCW was what got me into wrestling. The Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart, Sting, The British Bulldog, Randy Savage, and the Legion of Doom were my favourites as a kid, while I really viscerally despised Ric Flair, Sid Justice/Vicious, Shawn Michaels, and Mr. Perfect (basically, blond heels!) so they were doing their job perfectly too. I thought that Jake Roberts and Arn Anderson were evil but cool.

Those Perfect-Flair promos in late 91 leading to WM8 are so much fun.

I've just turned 40, not watched Wrestling in 25 years but from the late 80's to 97 I was an avid viewer of WWF. Recorded the 92 Rumble on VHS the night it aired and I must have wore the tape out watching it over and over again. I love this night, my favourite ever event they ever done! My only complaint was not playing the Heenan commentary when Flair low blowed Taker. Gorilla: "Did you see that?" Bobby: "Yeah, Flair tried to lift the Undertaker!"

This is awesome. The greatest Rumble narrated by the greatest pod cast. So much territory history in that ring that night, Kerry and Flair, Valentine and Flair, etc and of course Piper and Flair. My dad and I were long time WWF fans and of course big Babyface fans but Flair was the first heel my dad liked "It's not fair to Flair" great memories Thanks Jim and Brian and I knew they'd play the audio at 37:20 😂😂

Ric Flair’s performance in this Rumble was legendary. Flair truly was the 60 Minute Man. This Rumble was amazing.

Love Flair's post match promo! I saw this at a friends house and no one was going for Flair except for me. In the end they all had to pay homage to the Man! The greatest Royal Rumble ever for all of us fans who grew up in that era! It had it all!

To this day, this is still my favorite Rumble. My parents let me rent it for my birthday and it's a classic from Flairs performance to Heenan losing his mind throughout the entire broadcast

Too bad Brian wasn't there in person to see how loudly booed Hogan was at the end. The genuine look of shock at the crowd reaction that you never got to see except in person on the faces of Heenan and Monsoon was priceless

I was there in person. Blizzard that day and we missed some of the undercard. I was told by friends afterward that they couldn't get it on PPV because of the blizzard. The next day my buddies and I went to high school the next day and that's all we talked about with our other friends that didn't get to watch it. Being there in person, the video doesn't do it justice as to how ferociously Hogan was booed at the end.

I miss Rumbles like this. Notice that NO ONE is laying around or sitting in the corner. In the Rumble's now, everyone's dead in the corner for minutes or holding someone in the corner until the next entrant is in the ring. Once the new entrant enters, a few people feed themselves to them, so they can get their spots in.

Starting the show from minute one and simply blown away. First there's the pure nostalgia. But most importantly the presentation. The Orient Express and The New Foundation come with no iota of fanfare and it still hits me harder than most of the modern entrance routines. And the brillian lce of Heenan and Monsoon to say exactly what needs to be said--no need for breathlessly ineloquent embellishment. Simple lines pack so much more weight.

This is the greatest wrestling ever, please do this again. Also, the post match interview is classic.

IMO, still the most memorable and greatest Rumble match. Flair's first and finest WWF moment, the incredible starpower from so many different territories, the hilarious banter between Monsoon and Heenan esp every time Flair looked in trouble. What a pick for the watch-along! Thanks, guys! 👍

"WITH A TEAR IN MY EYE" If not my favorite top 3 favorite moments in Rumble history.

This is my favorite Rumble ever by far. I was 15 or so and I saved up money to order on pay per view. I was a huge fan of Ric Flair. I had gotten to know him by renting old tapes of pay per views at my local video store and reading Pro Wrestling Illustrated. Watched those matches with Dusty and Sting and many more. I remember seeing him in the WWF and it being so surreal because it was such a different environment. I wanted him to win so bad. Then he drew #3 and I just thought well there goes that. Monsoon and Heenan were perfect and they completely played into that and sold that idea. No way was he going to win. And then he did and it blew my young mind lol. It was perfect and that promo Flair did after with Heenan and Mr. Perfect was fantastic. The whole thing was just great start to finish. I recorded it on VHS tape and went back and watched it many times.

That Kerry Von Erich comment made me spit up my water. Also the 1992 commentary on Virgil being ready and Hungry has aged like a fine wine. Heenan was GOLD on commentary. He was so paranoid and bent out of shape it was great. Flair was brilliant. This is the best Rumble performance ever. Better than Rey or Benoit. HBK's 1995 win was when wrestlers came out every 30 seconds and the match itself was like 35 minutes. We'll never see Star Power like that again in one Rumble. The list of Main Eventers, legends from the Territories which weren't too long ago for some of these guys.

Crazy to see that there has been a time, when the crowd didn´t do the "Woooo..." when someone hit a chop. Especially when it´s the Nature Boy himself doing it.

The look on Flair's face when Roddy Piper came through the curtain. And then when Roddy entered the ring, Flair is begging for mercy while Roddy spins around with a great facial reaction, sprints to Flair, leaps on top of him and just starts pounding away. This is the kind of match you show your family and friends if they ever ask you why like professional wrestling.

Greatest Rumble of all time, greatest night of commentary of all time. Zero surprise entrants as well, if I remember right the six weeks before the Rumble 5 entrants were announced per week on Superstars. From Survivor Series 1991 to this to Mania 8, the shows that made the 11 year old Brit a lifetime fan Keep up the great work gents!

I always felt that the 90 Rumble was a very close second to the 92 one. Similar vibe. Everyone was a superstar.

I still find it hard to believe that Kerry Von Erich had only 1 foot during this time,i never ever would of guessed.. And this Rumble, the 92 Rumble, brillaint, loved it.

I'm pretty happy that Brian and Jim did this review. It's one of those that really deserves a good review from Jim since he knew a lot of the participants and can provide keen insights that a lot of us wouldn't have caught at that time. Like Brian, this is probably my favorite Rumble for both the participants and especially Heenan's commentary. Sometimes, I'll put this on just listen to Bobby since he cracks me up hard a lot in this, his overdramatization of selling basically Ric Flair's point of view through his own "special" interest, putting over all the people and their unique abilities to give each person a sense of danger to Flair, etc. For Flair, it's one of the most memorable nights for a single performance. I think one of the cool things about the Rumble 92 is the sheer variety of people Flair got to work with if only for a few moments. Lot of crossover moments as Jim/Brian pointed out regarding the different territory people getting a chance to work with each other again. This really was the ultimate ensemble cast of prominent people in wrestling at this time and probably represented the peak of the WWF in terms of having all the top names in the industry. I don't think in terms of sheer overall star power, the WWF has come close to what was presented that night. There were some odd choices in the Rumble that I never understood. Like Ted DiBiase coming out early getting eliminated quickly. Or the Warlord being the last guy. I know Bobby tried to sell the Warlord's spot being a wild card or that he could be a major player but after seeing the rest of the people before him, it was a bit deflating. And as far as the Hogan haters seeing redemption for Hogan's situation, I think he was just getting more annoying year after year. I think it really started when Savage lost the feud to Hogan over the title just because you could feel some sympathy for what happened to Savage in that situation. But it made Hogan look like a self-righteous prick. Then there was the stupid Desert Storm garbage with Hogan and Slaughter that just happened before and that whole thing turned the WWF (for me at least) into some jingoistic platform with Vince trying to suck up to Reaganite values in using a situation no one wanted to be a part of at that time. Also, I have a sneaky feeling a lot of us kids growing up in the 80s with their GI Joe figures liked Slaughter better than Hogan and Hogan's act was pretty stale by that point. And though he wasn't old compared to other performers these days still going at it, Hogan felt old to a lot of my friends. Probably, the bald spot (that Roddy had been pointing out for years) didn't help. But Hogan just didn't have a good look. Then when Sid threw Hogan over and Hogan started to complain, it was phony baloney. Even if Sid's work wasn't the best, he pretty much felt like the natural guy to hand the ball over to from Hogan. Heck, I remember one of those PWI magazines kayfabing that idea. But Sid was slightly bigger than Hogan, younger, seemed more athletic, his physique was far more impressive and he had a killer finisher compared to that lame leg drop. At the end of the Rumble, it never occurred to me until years after how it still was made to be about Hogan. Flair got a post-Rumble interview in and that was great but Flair really deserved that moment in the ring for his performance. So that probably was even more frustrating, especially for Flair fans who wanted to see him get his comeuppance after being screwed by Herd.

Hands down my favorite Royal Rumble match of all time was this match. The star power and stories going into this match were some of the best, if not, the best. Also, the match from 2001 is close, but not close enough to being the best.

I know none of them are as good as 92, but I would love for you guys to do this with some of the other rumbles from the 80s and 90s as well as this was very enjoyable. These are more fun than normal matches as we get little bits of info about 30 diff guys and what was going on at the time with all of them. Fun to see sometimes how much things change in a year, comparing 92 to 93 rumble is crazy as far as drop in quality goes ect.

Season 5 of the Royal Rumble is my favorite.

Looking back to January ‘92 I don’t think anybody thought Savage would have won the title a few months later at WrestleMania VIII.

Bobby Heenan's and Gorilla Monsoon's commentating contribution to this Royal Rumble was just the greatest commentary in the history of wrestling here. The way Bpbby Heenan sold it that he had a lot of money riding on Flair from beginning to end was classic. How Heenan said "I can't be unbiased here!". The way that Monsoon rubbed it in early on to Heenan that there was no way that Flair could win starting so early in the match. The way that Heenan acted like he was going to lose his mind every time Flair got into trouble and the way that Monsoon rubbed it in every time Flair got into trouble was hillarious and just added so much to what you saw in the ring as it happened. When Flair finally won it the way Heenan rubbed salt into the wound for Gorilla Monsoon was classic. The way Heenan acted like he had just won the lottery when Flair finally won was classic! Never was the commentary better for a professional wrestling match in history. God bless both Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan... the best commentary team in the history of wrestling and this Royal Rumble proves why!

One of my favorite Rumbles ever and I too have this on VHS, hasnt been one year where I dont put this into my VCR and watch it. Sid Justice throwing Slaughter at 300mph to the corner and him flying out was one of my favorite memories.

10:28 This would be at least the second time. They worked together at Survivor Series 91. Bulldog body slams Flair flat on his back and, while Bulldog is still leaning over him, Flair says something to him. I always assumed it was something along the lines of "Don't ever do that again, kid."

You know what always cracks me up about the Royal Rumble? They make such a big deal about who's picked number one but they don't talk about number two. What's the difference? Ones got nobody to fight until two comes in do they? It's the same thing.

Barry Darsow said in a shoot interview that he purposefully lost a ton of weight to portray Repo Man so people wouldn't recognise him so easily. He dropped to about 250lbs, which speaks to how big he was before.

The other thing that hurt the Flair-Hogan program was the terrible, terrible handling of the WWF championship which had made Hulk's stock drop with the fans. Before March/April of 1992, Hulk had 1.) won the championship from Slaughter, 2.) lost the championship from Taker, 2.) won it BACK from Taker, and then 3.) the championship was stripped from him by Jack Tunney. You can't make your champion look weak against a literal monster and then build up a program against some 'normal' looking person like Flair. Bruce never acknowledges the terrible handling of Hulk, Hulk's general boringness in 1991, or the terrible championship swapping decisions. That's why Hulk and Flair didn't draw. They ruined Hulk, Hulk was bored, ruined the championship, and didn't build up Flair correctly.

Never forget the crowd reaction for Sid .!.!.!.!.!

Nothing gave the true blue NWA fan greater joy when Flair showed up on WWF TV as the "Real Worlds Heavyweight Champion" with the big gold belt and won the '92 Rumble. The cheers from friends and family watching from my living room when Flair won was unbelievable. Getting a reaction? Understatement! Might be my single favorite pro wrestling moment in the 45 years I've been watching this stuff.

Anyone notice how small Taker looks compared to later years? WWF really was the land of the giants because he towered over most of the talent a decade later.

This was my favorite Royal rumble. My friend and I rented it at the video store in 7th grade. That's how I got to see it.

Finished watching this, the first of (hopefully many) Jim Cornette's Watch-Along. Looking forward to watching more in the series! Happy to see there are heaps of them.

I think Skinnner's whole gimmick was mostly to act as a foil to Ricky Steamboat who was being billed as just "The Dragon". They got a guy running around breathing fire in a lizard costume, so let's bring in an alligator hunter to cut promos and start a feud! At this point I think Steamboat said "fuck this!!!" went back to WCW and tore it up with guys like Rick Rude, Steve Austin, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton.

The story I had always heard was that the fans were cheering more for Flair and booing Hogan on the house shows so they didn't go with Flair vs Hogan out of fear that the fans would boo Hogan at Wrestlemania.
