The song is bittersweet because he died in a plane crash at 30 and didn’t get that time with his wife and son, then you hear the words and it brings a tear to your eye

Jim Croce wrote this song for his newborn son, AJ. Because his birth put life in perspective for Jim Croce. Croce wrote I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song for his wife Ingrid because, although he was a great songwriter, he had a tough time conveying his love and feelings to her. He wrote the song after they had an argument. Sadly Jim Croce died soon after he recorded Time In A Bottle, in a plane crash in 1973. Jim Croce was a wonderful storyteller. All of his songs came from his experiences. You should listen to Operator and Photographs and Memories, Bad Bad Leroy Brown and Lover's Cross..

I remember my mom playing this song for my sisters and me when I was a kid back in the late '70s. First she told us about Croce, what happened to him, how his career and life were tragically cut short, and then she played us the song. I remember crying. I was only 7 or 8, just a little boy, but it was an emotional experience. I didn't have the intellectual wherewithal at that age to properly verbalize how it made me feel, but I had been struck by the idea that this man's voice and the emotion he was conveying had survived him, and had been sitting there in my mom's record cabinet, captured on twelve inches of vinyl, waiting to be heard. Croce was a wonderfully gifted singer/songwriter, and it's a shame that modern audiences probably have no idea who he is. I'd wager most don't even know that was his song "I've Got a Name" in the Tarantino flick "Django Unchained."

Jim Croce was the best. All of his songs are great. Just beautiful songs about his real life experiences! A beautiful voice! 🎤He didn't have a bad song! Taken from us too soon. His guitar🎸 accompanied partner, Maury Muehleisin who played the best lead guitar and background vocals was also killed in the plane crash. A sad day. Left us some beautiful music.🎼✌

This very song made me strive to play music, sing, and write. Jim Croce, taken far too early, was roommate with Don MacLean in college! Imagine. Thank you for another nice reaction. Good thoughts expressed as well. Cherish precious time.

Sang this song in 9th grade choir (spring 1973). Memorized the words and music but never focused on the lyrical meaning of Jim Croce’s song. Amazing talent combining heartfelt lyrics along with a memorable melody. Thanks for your analysis and insight into this gem of the 1970s, Kirti and Savio.

I was a big Jim Croce fan. He was just coming into his own as a popular, singer, songwriter when he was killed in a plane crash in 1973. I remember the exact moment when I heard he had passed. I was devastated! I immediately thought of his wife and young son.

There will never be another like Jim, his death was musics loss, our loss. It's a shame that he wasn't able to make it out of the business like he wanted to, he had already made up his mind. Just like so many other talented people, that life claimed him.

A little thing I remember hearing when one of his friends was on a talk show. During the period of time he was preparing this album he was having to stay up late at night and even all night on some occasions and his wife was getting mad that he was neglecting her and his own health, she finely told him he needed to stop the next night early or he would be sleeping on the couch for the rest of the time he was doing the album. He apparently had every intention of doing as she asked but he needed tow more songs and he was close to dun on one so he pushed to finish it not releasing he had, You guessed it, Stayed up to late again. He found blankets and a pillow on the couch waiting for him. He was puzzling out how to get back on her good side and getting the last song he needed and Presto, He wrote her this dong to smooth things over. :)
