Idea Man isn't just about The Muppets, it's about all of Henson's work. And I love that, and I don't seem to be the only one who loves that because the film currently holds a 100% critic score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Making the score higher than cinematic classics such as Citizen Kane, Jim would be proud.

Hopefully people watch for the Muppets and stay for the rest of Jim's work, as it's all really fascinating. So glad it's going down well with critics and audiences alike!

I couldn’t believe they had footage of his planned Broadway show in 1971. It’s stuff like that that makes me wish they would publish more artifacts related to his not-so-well known work.

@SomeBoiOnline I think that really says something about just how much people want to see good, heartfelt, sometimes chaotic entertainment again. There's real magic in making something out of an old coat and ping pong balls or felt and feathers, and performing with it can't be replicated with computers.

Yep, there's definitely something about the heart of Henson's work that's just absent in entertainment today.

Toward the end, it kind of rushed through some parts that were pretty important, such as Fraggle Rock, Storyteller, Jim Henson Hour, the later specials, and the Disney negotiotions, just to get to his death. I just don’t feel like an hour and 47 minutes is enough time to really do him justice.
@SomeBoiOnline

I think Ron Howard said he would've liked to have done a series, as there's that much to cover. That I agree with, but don't think it could've been much longer as a standalone thing. More focus on Fraggle etc. would've been nice, though I think I have an idea why they glossed over the stress caused by the Disney deal...

I've got to watch it for the first time at the end of May, and it was truly amazing and terrific documentary of Jim Henson. Plus, Ron Howard did an awesome job onto this project and seeing the friends, family, co-workers and everyone who work with Jim Henson were excellent. Everything in that documentary of Jim Henson: Idea Man were emotional, heart-warming, inspiring, entertaining and a great learning experince on how Jim went through a lot from show, movies and many more.

I’m glad to see that this documentary was made in general. I’ve yet to watch it just yet, but after seeing this an getting the chance to see the original Muppet Movie yesterday on the big screen for the first time, I’m definitely going to watch it at some point. I’ve been fascinated by Jim Henson’s work for the longest time and while I’ve seen some KZfaq documentaries on the man’s life and work (I’d highly recommend watching Defunctland’s series on the man), I’m looking forward to seeing one that actually features the people that were closest to him and hear what they have to say. Love your videos and I hope to see more great content soon. 🐸

Steve's firing is just sad whichever way you look at it. "The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson" was a beautiful tribute, but likely not featured in the doc simply because it was Steve's Kermit. That part of the story is just omitted now, which is a massive shame.

Frank Oz is part of the problem. He's a toxic person, when it comes to the muppets. And his words feed the toxic muppet fanbase. As he is their leader. Whenever he says something toxic about the muppets, the toxic muppet fanbase will then cite him, and say "See, even Frank Oz thinks the muppets suck." I first noticed this toxicity in the older muppet fanbase with their irrational sociopathic hatred for Barney. There's still no rational reason as to why they hated on Barney so much. There's an entire documentary about it, and it all boiled down to, they are sociopaths. They hate Barney because he's nice, and sweet, and tells preschoolers that they're special, and he loves them. There was one guy who created an entire jihadist terrorist group against Barney, because he had convinced himself that Barney, a fictional character, was trying to steal his daughter's love from him, and that Barney was actively trying to turn his daughter against him. I'm not kidding. I wish I was. I also saw this toxicity be thrown against Elmo too. These people, who were full grown adults, were jealous that Elmo, a fictional character, was becoming more popular than the other fictional muppets. And what was Elmo's egregious crime, you ask? He had a toy that laughed when you tickled him. You can't make this stuff up. Nowadays this toxic sociopathic behavior is normal on social media. But this was during the early days of the internet, and I had never seen it before. I even know a guy personally, who shall not be named. But he's a pretty well known & liked figure within the muppet community. He's even been on television for his love for the muppets. But even he said that he wrote a letter to Mister Rogers, as an adult, telling him how much he hated Barney. And Mister Rogers actually wrote back, saying there's no need to hate Barney. Saying that not everything is for everybody.

Does this portion from an interview conducted by hardcore Muppet fans change your mind? Frank Oz: Jim was such an amazing person that he was always supportive of me even though he was loosing me to directing. But there was a time there where I was both directing and performing. And then as I did more movies, I didn't screw up, and they kept on asking me cause I didn't screw up, I did more. And that's the reason why I couldn't do Sesame Street as much, partly because, I had 4 kids growing up, but also, I was directing, and I had no choice but to give up my characters. It wasn't fair to say, "Nope, I'm holding onto them, that's it." It wasn't right. I haven't quit, I haven't retired from performing, I just haven't been asked. But Eric and those guys have been doing a brilliant job, and I always say that Eric is so talented, he really should have characters of his own, it's not fair to him. But nevertheless, I would not have had as much time, because you commit to a movie for a long time, and you pretty much work incessantly. Jarrod Fairclough: You obviously haven't performed for awhile, you said you haven't been asked, if you got a phone call from Sesame tomorrow saying "Hey, are you free for a week?" Would you jump back in or would you have to think about it? Frank: No, I would like that very much. As I stopped I was doing 2 days a year on SS, and I couldn't do a lot more than that, 4 days tops, because I was doing many other things. But the reason I'd go back is to let people know what I learned from Jim, which was this sense of controlled lunacy, which I don't sense anymore. The reason I'd like to go back is just to show people "Hey, this is how Jim did it, this is how we did it, and it's okay to do it for yourself, cause you're an adult, and just to have fun and screw around." That's the reason I'd love to go back, is to bring back a bit of that lunacy that Jim taught us. Jarrod: There seems to be some false narrative out there, occasionally you'll see a headline that says "Frank Oz thinks the Muppets suck now" or something like that. And you go "No, that's not what he said." And if you read through what you actually said in the article, it's just a quick quote or something taken out of context. So let's set the record straight, you don't think the Muppets suck. Frank: No. Now that was years ago, now the Muppets Studio these days is much better, and they're much more supportive. I talked to Billy Barretta and the guys and they had a great time doing the Dr. Teeth Mayhem thing. So I'm looking forward to seeing that. What I was talking about was before the current iteration of Muppets Studio, at that time, the guys I felt were not treated properly, with respect, and I felt, as they did, the writing for the 2015 series was trying to be adult and hip, when all they had to do was be pure. And it's very difficult for people to write pure when supposedly they have to be funny and adult. And people don't understand that the best way for the Muppets to be adult and hip is to be pure. So that was then, I felt it was very bad. But the Muppets themselves, no, and the performers, no, it was always the orders given that they had to do it this way, that's what bothered me. Jarrod: Yeah, I think Leigh Slaughter who runs the Muppets now, she really has an idea of what should be done. Frank: Leigh is terrific, and I forgot the other fellow's name, I met him. Jarrod: Michael. Frank: Yeah, they're people who actually care. In the beginning, earlier on, they didn't care. It was just a franchise. That upset me, because the Muppets are in my heart and these guys are such amazing performers and they're so ****ing brilliant, and they were not treated with that respect. Now it's different. Jarrod: Is there something that you didn't work on in the last 20 years or so that you feel got close to what they should have been doing? Frank: I remember, early on, there were some videos that they did. I remember there was a very popular video on KZfaq. Jarrod: Bohemian Rhapsody? Frank: Yeah, that was fun.
