Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple/Rainbow): "I had seen Jimi in Survivor and was very impressed. I remember going down to Tennessee to meet him and I really liked him as a person. He then came up to try out with Deep Purple. We did one song, I think it was 'Going Down' and he was so good I immediately stopped playing and just said, 'You're in!' He said, 'Don't you want to do more songs?' I said, 'No, you are so damn good, I know that you are perfect for the job.' We went out and celebrated at a restaurant. I was full of ideas due to his melodic, soulful voice, and he could improvise much better than a lot of singers I knew so he had every aspect I was looking for in a singer. Very, very nice guy. Very humble. Unfortunately, two weeks later, we were told he couldn't join the band. We never found out why. I think it had something to do with the management. I was surprised and saddened by what happened, and it was a mystery to me what had gone down. It was a bad moment for me. I rated him as one of the top singers in the country."

@@TerraAustralisUnlimitedHave you listened to his earlier music at all? While in high school he sang with The Debuts. They had a single named “If I Cry.” You can find it on KZfaq. He was also in a few Memphis bands…Target and Cobra. Target in particular shows off the “heavy” side of his voice.

I have been watching every video of Jimi Jamison that i can find. He is gorgeous in every video but, I always thought the most current Jimi looked like a different person than the 1980s Jimi. Of course, he was older. But the difference was more than just aging. Finally, in this video, he looks like the link between his 1980s look and his 2000s look.

@@robertbroughton1443 Yeah, but at least they're still out there, doing what they love, & their fans love. I'm both impressed & grateful to those still able to sing & perform. I saw Paul McCartney at Wrigley Field in 2011, & it was a horribly hot & humid night in Chicago, abnormally so even after dark. It was so bad, they ran out of bottled water, which had been selling for like $7 a bottle, & had nothing but warm beer left, about the same price -- amazing that happened at such a large venue. All that to say, I'm not sure how old Paul was then, close to 70 at least, but that man played a nearly 3-hour set, with no breaks, & while I'm sure he had water available, I didn't see him drink any. That would be tough on a younger person, let alone someone his age. So more power to those still able to do what they enjoy!

I came here to see 38 Special, though I love all the artists that play at World Stage-- was fortunate enough to see them a couple times many moons ago.. Don Barnes & Donnie Van Zant are so talented and love to hear all the accompaniment with the horns and backup singers. Jim Peterik is amazing too.. So cool that he brings all these great musicians together in one venue to showcase their talents. ❤
@rainymoon9848
@rainymoon9848 15 күн бұрын
Probably my favorite song that Jim Peterik co-wrote with a member of .38 Special, is the song "Alive". Peterik and Donnie Van Zant co-wrote it with Donnie's brother, Johnny. The Van Zant brothers were the first to record the song with Johnny singing it. They are very underrated as songwriters. Tending to be in their late brother Ronnie's shadow. Later on, the late Jimi Jamison recorded a cover of it which was a bonus track on his Crossroads Moment CD. One of the backing singers in this video, Lisa McClowry, sang backing vocals on Jimi Jamison's cover of the song "Alive". Jamison also apparently sang a country version of the song first, which will be on the upcoming Jimmy Wayne Jamison CD in August. Anyhow, favorite Peterik and Don Barnes co-writes would be: "To Miss Somebody" (sung by Peterik and Dennis DeYoung on the first World Stage album), "Winds of Change", and "Chain Lightnin'". Jim Peterik and Don Barnes recently co-wrote 5 songs together for the upcoming 50th Anniversary album for .38 Special.

Jimi Jamison has that Melodyne (the actual name for AutoTune) audibly cranked on his vocals. The pitch-shifting feature is doings its job. It's amazing how far it's come for live performers in recent years. He always had such a great voice and it's awesome that he found ways to continue performing at a high level even at that age.
@oldschoolgay
@oldschoolgay 4 ай бұрын
How can you tell? I don't doubt you, but what do you hear?
@laurayounge
@laurayounge 4 ай бұрын
Jimi didn't need any of that; he was always pitch perfect and able to transition from lower to higher registers with ease. Also, he was in his fifties here--"even at that age" is condescending and insulting. Jimi Jamison was an unparalleled talent and a seasoned professional in every sense of the word.
@madlift
@madlift 3 ай бұрын
@@laurayounge @laurayounge And he was unmistakably using Melodyne on his vocals during this performance. Not sure why you'd believe that a singer's voice doesn't degrade with age and decades of use. Father Time is (and always will be) undefeated versus performers. If you find that condescending or you feel insulted by proxy on Jimi Jamison's behalf because he's an aging singer who uses a very common technological tool to aid him in delivering an entertaining live performance, then I don't think there's much more to say.
@madlift
@madlift 3 ай бұрын
@@oldschoolgay Sorry for the delayed reply. There are noticeable pitch shifts, particularly at the end of phrases where the notes audibly bend up or down. It's the hallmark of this kind of technology. It's been used for decades in studio recording but the software creators have made unbelievable strides with its effectiveness during live performances over the last several years to the point that it's now ubiquitous. The best versions of Melodyne-type software are all but undetectable anymore, even live. It's been a lifesaver for performers who can't (or won't) use a pre-recorded vocal track. If you've been to a show by any artist of almost any stature (even smaller touring bands in the clubs) in the last 5-7 years you've heard it, even if you didn't know it. If you want to see what earlier versions of bad Auto-tuning sounded like, the go-to example is Billy Joel doing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in 2007. The techs set the software to a different key than the one he sang it in which made it constantly struggle to keep him on-key. It's super obvious and really, really bad. He got a lot of flak for it. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNOYh9B8qZzWiJc.html
