I think it’s been pretty well documented that Trips worked his way back up the ladder after the Curtain Call. JR himself has stated that he told Paul to take the hit, eat the shyt, and bear it out. And H did. He took his L, worked his ass off, and climbed out of that hole. Yes, he was on some politics bs with Shawn and the Kliq. Yes, he’s played a lot of backstage games. And no, he’s not the best there ever was. But I haven’t heard anybody from that locker room say he can’t work, and nobody up the chain say he didn’t grind his way back from that night in MSG. So I understand not necessarily liking him, but you do have to respect him.

i think this is the right take. i'm not a fan of Helmsley burying guys and playing politics...but he absolutely worked his ass off to get to the top, and most importantly he wasn't satisfied at the top. That's why he created NXT because he wanted to take a risk to make a bigger impact. Big respect to him. The Rock gave that great video paying tribute to Triple H and it is worth nothing those two guys had legitimate backstage heat for a while.

Nothing stupid whatsoever about what Triple H said, he was the only one punished for the Curtain Call that his more established friends insisted on and Vince okay'ed, then worked his way back into a top spot. People conveniently forget that his relationship with Stephanie started long after he'd become a multi-time WWF champion, the only credible main event heel they actually had between September '99 and June '00.

Paul was involved with creative in the late 90s and was always wanting to help out with production meetings since Russo left. He lived the business and didnt see it as just work. He hook up with Stephanie due to this not to get a push cause he already was a top heel when he was hooking with Steph and if you think about it had things gone sideways with her he would be screwed so I dont think he was with her to get a spot.

Yeah by the time he and Stephanie started dating he was already a 4x champ and in a top role. He had already been involving himself in production. I think people just ignore that because it's a more salacious narrative. And in retrospect it would've been a checkers move on his part with that motivation IMO.
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv 2 жыл бұрын
@@vampirascoffin870 They all tried to screw up each other's pushes depending on how you view it. People like JR and Bruce have long said it's a selfish business and you almost have to be to succeed. That was some of their surprise with Mick Foley's success because a lot of them pegged him as too nice to really ascend. I also think fans spout this "burying people" or "killing so and so's push" narrative without really putting themselves in the person's shoes. Nobody else is looking out for you. You can sit on the sideline and let someone else be the big star and make the money or you can advocate for yourself to try and get it. I think all of us if presented with the choice to sit back and be meek and be a Midcard wrestler making $500K a year or to "politic" as they say and be a top guy making millions for a long period of time would all likely chase our self interest as well. I think in those circumstances we'd be doing what we could to advance our careers as well, as many of us do in our normal jobs with much smaller compensation packages attached to it.
@PiCheZvara
@PiCheZvara 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's the official version. IMO he simply saw he was getting upstaged by The Rock and Austin and he knew no matter how hard he works and how good he gets, he isn't as good as the most talented guys. So he rolled the dice and swung for the fences. The guy was always political, befriending the top guys upon entering the company, etc. Do you really think that at 31 years old, he suddenly fell madly in love with the boss' 22 year old daughter? Not a chance.

Dude you know nothing about him, marks always think they have that extra info to know the wrestlers, but they don't. They hear some dirtsheet stuff and that's it. The marriage definitely benefitted him, sure, but it's disingenuous and stupid to say a man you don't know started a family with someone else and built a life long relationship just to get higher up in the business. There's a difference between hooking up (which has happened for business clout) and marrying someone.

But as petty as it sounds, my breaking point with Triple H was that absolute BS garbage backstage segment with Triple H, his ass buddy Shawn Michaels, and the way they crapped all over Chris Masters. That was classless, disrespectful and worse of all, it was Triple H abusing his power. By the time he started dating her, much less married her, he had already been champ 4x and was involved in production etc. HHH had a history of betting on himself well before Stephanie. Look even to the WCW deal where he declined a multiple year offer for a one year offer and said you'll either want me or you won't. The marriage theory just gets thrown around because it's easier than just admitting that while he might not have been people's favorite, he worked hard to get where he was. Vince was mad at the rock Foley and russo for the this is your life segment. When they found out how high the ratings were for that segment they chased him down to talk shit and Vince told them do what you want from now on. Vince was pissed a triple h and Shawn for a lot of what they did in the early dx days, but once he saw the ratings and the response he let them be. @@mightilyoats2729 HHH doesn't get enough credit for what he has done for this company. I've said it before many times already, reason Stone Cold, Rock, and others were great was because they had great heels (like HHH or Vince) to go against. He may have not been biggest star, or biggest draw but this guy is without a doubt one of best/if not the best heel ever. Would Stone Cold be Stone Cold if he had to fight Corbin every week? Would Rock be Rock if he had to fight Drew McIntyre and Elias every week?

The reason buisness was down was squarely on HHH, they gave him the keys to the kingdom, and he didn't produce. HHHs matches were dull and boring after his return. HHH buried talent like Angle and Jericho, he never got bested on promos, never looked stupid. This level of vanity booking reminded me of Hogan in WCW.

Sounds like H asked to speak to the roster and like J.R. said, he used his connections but I think the reason he asked was to show he wants to take ownership and show he can be a positive leader. Now, who he was trying to show, who knows. It could've been Vince. Could have been the locker room. Could have been both. Could be a completely different option. But since that knee injury, I think it hit H HARD that he's not going to be fresh and on top forever. So he needed to do something to set the foundation for the position he's in now. If HHH wasn't involved with Stephanie, do I see him being in his current position today? Honestly, yes. I don't think he was going to give up until he got his future goals and plans on a moving path. Either way, I can see him in a high exec position like he is now. But instead, I think mayyyybe he got a bit of slack due to being with Stephanie. But not much. Vince isn't going to put someone in a CEO spot just because his daughter says and wants. Hes going to do business first, and family desires that involve the company, later.
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv 2 жыл бұрын
I think you can credit HHH's wrestling career to his work ethic and initiative. The guy turned down multiple years for one at WCW. Got involved with production and learned as much as he could. Was a multiple time champ before he ever dated Stephanie. All that said his executive role? That is likely due to family. I think he would've still been in a high level creative role, like a Michael Hayes, but I don't see him being an executive of the company without the family ties. And while I agree Vince usually does what's best for business, he has pushed family into important roles other would be more qualified for. Stephanie was made head of creative in 2002 when she was 4 years out of college. That wouldn't happen for someone non family. She ascended to bring an executive of the company in her mid 30s. I'm not saying she isn't smart of talented, but as a young adult with a 4 years communications degree she wouldn't have been an executive in another company by her mid 30s.

If you read his piece in the 02 Flex magazine, most of your take, and what he said in the meeting is consistent. He was asked about how long he saw himself wrestling. He said "If you asked me 18months ago, I would've said easily another 10 years at least." After sustaining the quad injury, "probably five. How grueling this rehab process is for me, the emotional not just physical toll...It shows the fragility of a career, how quick it could end." But "when I retire from the ring, I'm never leaving. I'll work behind the scenes even more. I was always fascinated with that side of running things, just as passionate as I am about the ring." Again, he's not married to Stephanie yet and was speaking that way. He went on to talk about how deeply passionate he is about the business and how disappointed he is when he talks to the Tough enough contestants. He would ask some of them (and I assume either off camera or MTV edited this part from the show) "what are you gonna do if this doesn't work out? When they say 'go back to school or get a job,' I shake my head. That's not the answer I'm looking for. If you wanna be in this business, and be at the top you have to be all in. Be committed. Do whatever it takes. It has to be your life."

And the fact that Triple H wanted to get in those positions really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way most of the guys were there to have a career earn a living get over with the the fans and you know maybe get their shot at a few acolytes and if Triple H is the golden boy then they're not gonna be able to get their fair shake a lot of guys really felt that his seeing Stephanie put him in a position to be the shot caller and a lot of guys left Because of that that was when people were leaving for TNA and you know it's when Randy Orton showed up Evolution was doing your thing and and the whole thing was really stupid the whole raw vs smackdown was boring but they didn't have another company that they could play off of like the monday night wars with WCW once TMA showed up and started poaching their talent then they really had someone else to compete with The other big problem smacked out was really created for the rock to be the headliner of the show because he coined the phrase smackdown so they decided that he would headline a new program on Thursday nights and and unfortunately that only lasted a few years because in 2000 he decided that he was going to take a break and do some acting and see if he could Make a go of it

How was Evolution stupid? Evolution directly resulted in the creation of two top tier stars that carried the company into the future. It accomplished exactly what it was supposed to do. A lot of guys who went to TNA didn't really go there by choice. Some did but a lot of their WWE hires were guys let go by WWE first. But the appeal of TNA wasn't Triple H related. The appeal of TNA to many who did go there was making a solid living while working a very light schedule in comparison to the schedule of WWE.
