The fans would have given pretty much anything to have had that 97-98 DX Shawn, during the remaining Attitude years…Once people like myself started watch religiously, Shawn (the best performer) had already retired and we could only watch VHS tapes, to behold his glory. I once met HBK during an autograph signing in early 99 and I begged him to come back and wrestle for the people like me, who never got to see him…Shawn looked up at me and there was more sadness and regret than I’ve ever seen in another person before.

It’s sad because HBK carried the wagon through the worst days. Company almost closes down while he’s on top, he’s under alot of pressure the company starts getting white hot and he helps ushers in a new era but sadly he can’t reap the rewards from his hard work so they drape a shirt over him and they found a shiny new toy (Steve Austin). I’m thankful he found Christ. Otherwise his story would have ended much different than it did.

Most people seem to feel this was a bad match, or at least not the best match they could have had. I strongly disagree. Like Curt did for Bret at Summerslam, even with a back that needed surgery, Shawn sold amazingly well for Austin. The moves he pulled off in that match despite his condition were ridiculous. Steve performed well too & deserves a good amount of credit. A "bad HBK match" is a lot better than what wwe does today, & I'm not even his biggest fan. It was a great match accept for the Tyson ending. His whole involvement was unnecessary-just a desperate ploy for tickets & ratings

He legitimately had surgery in January of 1999. 11 months after WM14. He tried rehabbing it the entire summer / fall of 98. That’s why he came back as commissioner, because the belief is that he would be able to return to the ring later that year. But physical therapy didn’t work, and he resorted to surgery in January 1999. You can see his scar, it is fairly big.

@@dietryin9710 he has but there’s always an excuses. Why is it that everyone in wwe always protect Shawn. How many other wrestlers such mr perfect, Andre, mankind, etc wrestlers hurt and had to go through the same type of life styles. No one ever protects them. Shawn has gotten away with so much bs in his career, it’s astonishing this guy is still alive. From countless bar fights where he ran his mouth to unprofessional behaviour. The one time he had to do the honours put him into a hissy fit. Imagine taker had to threaten him to do the job. When Bret hit bc screwed it had nothing to do with countries. It had everything to do with respect. Think about it, brets plan was to have 2 more match’s with Shawn which were going to be legendary. Brets wins andthen in the third match Shawn wins and Bret would endorse him. This is great story telling. Even Vince loved the idea, but Shawn didn’t wanna do the honours. Ask yourself how many times did Bret do the honours for someone else compared to Shawn. Anyway my point is that because triple runs WWE, they try to erase the 90’s especially 96-97 but the fans who watched the 90’s remember everything.

@@Sayed36870 Who has ever tried to erase Shawn in 96 to 97. Everyone still says it. Every documentary covers that period of Shawn and they all say the same thing, He was one of the best but a huge prick. However, he is still honoured because despite of his issues he is a positive to the business. SIMPLE. If you don't think that this man has a positive influence in wrestling then I can't help you. As for Montreal, yes the main issue was about respect but Canada also added the heat as Bret himself said in his own documentary. And given that Bret was leaving, I still wouldn't put him over Shawn. When someone is close to leaving the lose. That's why there was no way Shawn was winning at Mania 14. You do the honours on your way out. So I'm not expunging Bret fromany liability in that saga. There was a war going on and what had to be done was done even if it was wrong. Furthermore, I won't say Vince loved the idea. Many guys have stated that Vince has a way of manipulating people. So Bret may have thought that Vince loved the rematches but we can't be sure of that. Finally, Shawn lost in his second run more than ever even more than Bret. Every single major rivalry he lost, Taker, Hunter, Jericho, Orton, Cena etc.

I guess I now know on which side of the political spectrum JR lies. He kind of tipped his hand on that one with his candid remarks. Not surprising. Anyway, despite his demons (which we all have), Shawn Michaels helped carry the WWF (I still say WWF because I'm an old school hardcore fan) through its dark years; when it was on the verge of closing its doors. When the mass exodus of talent occured in the early nineties, I thought the WWF was finished. It was the likes of Shawn, Bret Hart, Scott Hall (Razor Ramon) and The Undertaker that helped keep it on life support. Now, all of a sudden they find a new talent in Stone Cold (of which I'm still a huge fan so not knocking him) and Shawn has to take the fall to get him over. I'm sure the WWF's attitude about it was "We no longer need you. We have our appointed guy now and you're injured so you are now an expired commodity". At that point, I'm sure Shawn thought the sun had set on his career. That can get a man down easily, especially if he's still young. When the time comes that you can no longer do what you love, that can take a huge toll on you mentally and emotionally. It can easily lead to deep depression and ultimately substance abuse to cope, which I think was the case with Shawn. I'm glad he was able to find peace and purpose in his personal life outside of the business. He's better off for it.
