I have two pair of Filson Whipcord pants, bought in the '70's. They too are just a little under the stated size. Not nearly as heavy as the Mackinaw wool pants, but very tight weave and totally windproof. Wore them for years throughout a several months long hunting season as a packer and guide, still look like new. Never too hot or too cold. Too bad they don't still make them.

Agreed these are half a size smaller than the number size. These are very warm and i can only see wearing these practically in the snow or freezing weather

My first time using these, I assumed the Mackinaw pants were a stand-alone piece for freezing weather. I couldn't have been more wrong. Went outside in 20-degree snowy weather. My thighs chafed. But with 400g long johns underneath, I pushed the pants to -30F. This was in Montana. The Mackinaw pants handle snow exceptionally. But the weave is sub-par that it doesn't insulate without heavy long johns.
