In this discussion, I sit down with my student Jim, an experienced music producer and musician, to explore insights on learning jazz improvisation. We discuss the disconnect between perceived and actual problems, share our experiences overcoming mental obstacles, and highlight key mindset shifts and techniques to help you grow as an improviser.

My biggest problem is time. Mostly time at the keys. I started playing last September & I still only spend 15-20 minutes at a go, but getting 2-5 of these in 4-6 days a week. (ok, sometimes I will only get one 15 minute session in a day, but those are rare.) I find it hard to play in time, but that will be overcome, you know, with time. I am a very process oriented person & while I haven't tried to tackle many songs at this point, I do know all my major scales fingering through 2 octaves. I just need to find something that will keep me at the keys longer for each session. Or who knows, maybe I don't. only time will tell.

Great lesson!!! Now I’m thinking, what if you’re in a jam session, how do you react or "converse" with other musicians?…I mean, are they looking for a particular answer?….also, could "bullying" happen in a jam session?….pardon the question but I guess it’s about mindset and I thought sometimes mindset could be broken within the environment. How do you carry yourself when presented with "intimidation"

Maintain a curious mindset and don't be discouraged. Sometimes it takes years to realize that people just wanted to show you something.
