On this day in 1975 {September 9th} Jim Stafford was a guest on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'... At the time his "I Got Stoned and Missed It" was at position #48 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #37 {for 2 weeks} and it spent nine weeks on the Top 100... It reached #78 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart... Between 1973 and 1977 the Winter Haven, Florida native had eight records on the Hot Top 100 chart, two made the Top 10, "Spiders and Snakes" {#3 for 1 week in 1974} and "Wildwood Weed" {#7 for 2 weeks in 1974}... James Wayne Stafford will celebrate his 76 birthday this coming January 16th, 2020...

Shel Silverstein wrote most of the hits Dr.Hook had. Some very funny songs. He also wrote most of the songs for Old Dogs CD - Waylon Jennings,Bobby Bare,Jerry Reed & Mel Tillis' group. The man was insanely talented and diverse, from being a multi instrument musicain, author, cartoonist to theatre.

At 13, I split from an abusive home and thumbed to Berkeley. Got involved in anti-war protests, saw my 1st Grateful Dead concert at the college, did my 1st acid at that concert. I met so many GOOD people & went on to thumb thu about 42 of the 48 continental states (I missed the east coast!). I'd do it again if it wasn't so crazy now what with serial rapists & serial murderers roaming the interstates. It was such a different & wonderful time back then......

That's right, it's legal here now! I heard the late great Silverstein sing it. As well as Shel's other classics such as The Unicorn and The Man Who Got No Sign. And he sang his song A Boy Named Sue with Johnny Cash, didn't he? ...But you're the best for funny songs, Jim Stafford!

Check out the 1972 original version written and performed by Shel Silverstein, lyrics much more "robust". Dr. Hook then covered the tune with pretty much Silverstein's lyrics. Stafford's version is tamed.
