Dismantling a scam

4 жыл бұрынThis group of scammers send fake Paypal invoices and try to convince their (usually elderly) victims to login to their online bank whist they have remote access. And it usually ends badly for the victim.
This time around however, I managed to find out who they were and I slowly dismantled their scam.
Victim details are always blurred out, but I've also had to blur out some of the scammer details too. This is to meet with KZfaq's policies.

I have done this in real life where some tourists obviously were getting scammed and lured. But what he does takes a whole new level of dedication and can only be admired. I really hope more countries would make his work legal and support the white hats (maybe with some sort of policing license).

@@prac2 Depends. Running a wide array of AV scans and resetting any important passwords is a good place to start. But honestly, nothing beats just reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows.

Yeah the scammers not going to go for a crazy amount. It will draw attention from the bank. Small transfers of a couple grand will go unnoticed until its too late.

My demented grandfather was scammed out of thousands of euros not too long before he died and sadly no one could help him back then. All I want to say is thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do. These kinds of people always know to target the weakest of them all and it absolutely disgusts me.

My now widowed grandmother has severe Alzheimers, my grandfather was the last person she would recognize (she doesn't even remember her 3 daughters) thus she has to be in 24hr care. It angers me so much that those scammers took so much of the money that needs to go into my grandmothers care now. There is so many devastating consequences for the victims of such scams.

I love how you never confirm it's you or that someone is there when the scammers start going nuts with certainty that someone is messing with them. That's just the best part for me. It's easy and probably even somewhat enjoyable to react in that scenario but it's smart because that will drive them way crazier than anything. To speak is to give them some satisfaction that they may know what the issue is. Just leaving the scammer lost in uncertainty really has some allure

I was scammed last year by some guy who wanted me to pay him in gift cards & PayPal. he manipulated me into believing stories he’d tell me and then would threaten me if I said I couldn’t afford to send more money to him. Saved my dad thousands. They buy online games from China as well to launder the money once transfered from your account. TD Canada Trust is now onto them and investigation with the help of Indian Authorities and the RCMP. China is no damn help whatsoever almost like their in on it.

I adore you, Mr B! I really like your complete anonymity and willingness to cross the line into the gray area to tackle scammers. Sadly, despite the growing amount of "good guys" the hackers are winning, with rare legal penalties of any weight. Most are back to work despite deliberately encouraging folks -- often elderly and well educated Americans and Europeans -- as trained mules to launder $$ often out of fear. It's very seductive and too successful. People like you are going to need to ratchet up your catches and hits bc they far outweigh you guys ☹️🧐😕😠

Well Jim very efficiently shuts down operations but that might not always scare scanmers off enough to prevent them from opening up a new call center. Scam baiters who waste scammers' time frustrate them, ridicule them in front of millions, speak to their conscience which all together might actually make some scammers reevaluate and quit. Plus it is really entertaining to watch and learn what to look out for. I think we need both types of scam hunters, they complement each other.

I understand how he can see their screen same as them, but how is he shadow watching ALL of there convos for extended periods of time, and rumigging around their files without anyone noticing?

I believe it's due to the fact that the scammers already use so many third-party apps to black out screens, download information, etc. so they don't notice the same program is being used against them. Because Jim uses the same program that they use against them, and because this system is already in use, the scammers dont notice when its active. I could be wrong though, so don't take what I said too heart haha! :)

He initially uses the same Remote Desktop software as the scammers, only to deploy the actual software he uses to spy on them. That other software is way more powerful and comprehensive than the Remote Desktop software the scammers use.

It's probably more complicated than that seeing as how these scammers are not US citizens and the relative harm they cause is probably not much compared to other things the FBI has to deal with. IDK, just a thought.

Nice work. You have the ability to keep talking calmly to victims. It certainly helps because the victim listens to what you say. I so wish I had the computer knowledge to do what you do. If I could just stop one innocent victim I would feel so good about that, let alone what you do to disrupt their networks like your ability. A big thumbs up to you. Jim, as an Indian, I have a feeling that Police department isn't even opening your emails and if they're opening, they're not taking it seriously (not even reading them completely) & same goes for Hathaway. I don't know if this will work or not but try contacting Cybercell (they're more likely to read it and take it seriously) and/or You can tweet this to Indian PM, Foreign Minister & The Minister of Communication & Ask your followers to make that tweet viral. This may end this nuisance once and for all.
