Jimi Hendrix Fuzz - Dunlop FFM3 vs FFM6

People have been asking what the difference is between the Jimi Hendrix Fuzz and the Band Of Gypsys Fuzz.
Here, I'll be demonstrating the mini versions of the two pedals. They're both unique and sound great, to say the least.
Even though Jimi was only around a few years, he definitely had a few Era's to his sound. These Fuzz pedals represent the Band Of Gypsys Woodstock Era and the Band Of Gypsys 1970 Era.
The main and obvious difference is that the Jimi Hendrix Fuzz is Silicone, while the Band Of Gypsys Fuzz is Germanium.

Great job on demonstrating the differences and great playing to boot! Thanks a lot, I really enjoyed your video. I especially like that you demoed the clean sounds of the guitar rolled down. Your wah sounds fantastic too.

Thanks! Yeah it's the VOX V847-A. It has a buffer on the Output jack, which is why it works well 1st in the chain.

@@dude_crush_ I have the same wah and fuzz (ffm3) but for me with the wah as the first in the chain, it doesn't work so well, since I can'T get that fat fuzz sound.. I need to use the wah after it, exactly because of the buffer. The sound get really trebly using the wah at the first position in the chain. I mainly use 2 fender strats with this setup.. and both react the same way. I will give a try to it again, maybe a different setting helps :)

FFM3 ! I cant believe how simple and amazing it sounds. I own a boutique hand made Hendrix inspired fuzz and Im baffled How I prefer the FFM3 over it! great clean up with the volume on the strat - simple off the counter fuzz but so effective

Yeah, there's really not much to it. It's just a few pedals, but it's mainly all in the hands. I keep going back and forth between the two. I love the jangly clean-up sound from the FFM3, but I also love the punchy aggressiveness from the FFM6.

The band of Gypsys is silicone too! Works better with a cranked at amp, as they both do. Both great with the Wah! But if you want the really sparkly clean up with the volume pot, keep the volume high and back of the fuzz a tad!

Sounds great! Both of them. I miss my old 68 grey fuzz face. What model wah are you using? Does it have a buffer?

I have both and the blue is more Electric Ladyland and the BOG is Fillmore and Woodstock.

FF3 is definitely my favorite, sounds thicker and fuzzier. FF6 is like a little less fuzzier but i feel like it allows the sound of the amp & guitar to shine through a little better

I'd go for the band of gypsies fuzz, as you can use the wah pedal to adjust the tone if you want to cut some of the bass.

I have the turquoise one because of the clarity and it cleans up.but red still rock's just missing certain frequency of the higher register

The low end is getting compressed earlier with the red compared to the blue for sure.

You mentioned in the video that the Band of Gypsys was germanium transistors and the Hendrix Fuzz Face is silicon.... Actually both of those pedals are silicon transistors, The Band of Gypsys isn't a fuzz face circuit at all and that is why they react so differently on the controls. The fuzz face circuit likes having the controls dimed to get it's sound and use the guitar volume is just how the simple circuit works. Gets weak and muddy real quick dialing the controls on the pedal back, but if you were using up less headroom on your amp it would be more obvious that the fuzz face circuit has about half the output volume capabilities of the Band of Gypsys circuit- which is 3 transistors instead of the 2 in a Fuzz Face. And, is a modification on an Octavia circuit by Roger Mayer his guitar and pedal tech. The mod had the upper octave section removed, and was just put into a Fuzz Face enclosure for Hendrix at the time in '69 because bud box pedal enclosures didn't exist yet. Band Of Gypsys for the win for me, it also doesn't do that screeching oscilation sound with the wah in front, or sound to compressed with a buffered pedal around it, plays nicer with other pedals. On a side note: if you install a kinman treble bleed on your guitars volume pot, the Gypsys Fuzz will clean up much nicer and brighter more like the fuzz face cleanup sound with guitars volume, just a little FYI hack for anybody struggling expecting it to cleanup like a fuzz face but finding it too muddy when guitar volume is rolled off. A guitar volume treble bleed helps with a nicer amp cleanup too IMHO. Great sounds in the demo vid!!! Try some lower control settings on the Gypsys!, lots of other lower gain sounds to be had there too!

I have the FFM6 and had the FFM2 which is the ONLY germanium in these series of pedals. The FFM2 was WAY too woolly for my liking that's why I got the FFM6 to even it out. The FFM3 sounds just a bit too jangly for me thank you for your demo. It confirms my choices. Great tone and noodling by the way!!

Thanks! I'm using the EVH 5150 III EL34 50w 2x12 Combo, clean channel. Gain is at max, Volume at 7, Power Level 1 watt

i sub without second thought ! Man i love Hendrix and for many years i have a Kumika semiacoustic guitar that sucks! Finaly i m going to buy a new one, strat sss style for sure.. But , i dont know what guitar ,what amp ,what pedals ?? !! Any advice for what combination of all that below 1000 Euros to get close to sound like you ??

Thanks! I would definitely start with getting one of these Fuzz pedals and the VOX V847-A Wah. Amp: you want something with EL34 power tubes. You don't "need" a 100watt Marshall stack. I was running my amp at 1-5 watts and it was plenty loud. Guitar: Strat for sure, maybe go Squire or a used Mexican Fender and upgrade the pickups with Dimarzio Area 67 pickups.

You gave me a budget, so that's what I went with. I know Seymour Duncan sells the Jimi Hendrix pickups individually, so that's also another option.

Make sure you get the vox v847-A wah that dude mentions because the some of the other modern vox wah's just haven't got as good of a wah sound and tone range. I have one (bought second hand) and it just sounds great; so much better than my old morley wah/volume/distortion pedal.

Hey, so do you know which model he used for Fillmore East? Looking for that compared to the Woodstock BOG tone.

It wasn't the one he used at Woodstock. He had like 10 fuzz faces at any gig and test them out at sound check to see which one sounded best that night. Or at least that's what he did with the Germanium fuzz faces, but I think by this time he was using a Silicone fuzz face, I'd go with the Signature model.

Thanks! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Yes. The BOG is based on the Octavia Fuzz, but without the Octave. The Octavia did use Germanium transistors. Comparing the FFM3 to FFM6, they sound drastically different, especially when rolling down the volume on the guitar. I'm assuming that's the difference between Germanium and Silicone.

Turquoise one is germanium, red one is silicon. Telltale sign is the white noise in the background when the turquoise one is on and you're not playing through it. I'm willing to bet that the turquoise one won't play nice on a hot day where the red one will. As for Octavia, that is a completely different beast... The Dunlop fuzzes are the same circuit just different transistors within. The Octavia is a completely different circuit. For a bit of history, Hendrix use germanium FF first because that's what was available, no silicon, but when silicon became available he used silicon because it was more consistent in sound over the germanium.
