What a complete overrated guitar player. He had a gimmick stage show played a little different but aside from the professional curiosity off guitar players back then he was nothing special. America didn’t care for him until he moved and other players saying that he was good. Player’s outplayed and past him up before the body was cold.

I disagree. I see a bunch of frustrated people trying to “get off”. The loud annoying singing drummer forcing the crowd to clap and sing in order to make himself look good (some things never change). The people freaking out because a guy trying to take pictures, the people on acid trips trying to climb the wall and getting rejected … this scene was about why the 60’s had to die.

@@craigponzio236 They are all great, but totally different tones and styles, but not the same groovin vibes of what Jimi, Allman Bros. and those bands then were doing. You just have to hear it, cant be explained. They are all great in their own ways. Did you ever hear Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, that is a lot like a Jimi style stream of consciousness jam, Robin Trower somewhat, SRV he did that some also, played songs longer and jammed out on some. But you got to admit, Jimi changed the sound of rock and roll guitar, and music in general, more than any one person did.

There was no one that could touch his virtuosity until Eddie Van Halen came along and even he would have admitted that he was heavily influenced by Hendrix and Eric Clapton. I heard from reliable local sources... (I went to high school with those guys) that Eddie in his early days claimed he could play ANY Clapton solo note for note. I believe it was true. You should have heard him play cover tunes. I did, several times! Man, he rocked out on "Rock n Roll, Hootchie Coo" for example despite the raspy voice of David Lee Roth. Eddie was a great player even in High School, but like Jimi, he was such an original innovator on the electric guitar later on when Van Halen made it big. Sure SRV and Robin Trower copied Hendrix pretty well, but there was only one Jimi and likewise, although many copied Edward, there was only one Eddie Van Halen. His son, Wolfie... actually can play guitar almost as good as Eddie amazingly, but Eddie is the original. I think innovation counts for a lot when evaluating the significance of guitar players. Shredders are a dime a dozen. I saw so many of them in the "King of the Blues" contest that Guitar Center Covina had which I competed in. Edward brought Pagani chops into hard rock, even more than Zappa did. Zappa was another underrated innovator. Les Paul was not that good by today's standards, but he too was an innovator. The electric guitar and double tracking was almost unheard of before Les Paul and Mary Ford. I don't know .... maybe I should give Charlie Christian the accolades for the electric guitar, but surely Les Paul made guys like Beck and Page possible with the multi-track recording thing and guitar designs.

Derrick Trucks and Warren Hayes probably have the crowns now.

DrPsychedelic its true, jimi would have played at unimaginable volumes,PA systems were not as they are now back then so therefore jimi had to turn his amps up to crazy volumes to be heard, and he loved how the amps behaved at that volume. When amps were at that volume the speakers did physichally move ridiculous amounts of air and you would have been able to physichally feel it if you were standing in front of them

He was not sloppy.. he first got his songs and jams tight.. then loosened them up enough to sound emotional..so he did not sound like a boring robot shredder of today. He knew what he was doing.

I saw Jimi three times; he was my demi- God back then ! He lead the music scene back then and it took THIRTY years after his death for Steve Vai and Joe Satriani to become proficient as Jimi , albeit they had their own styles by then .

Air pollution in places like LA was so bad in the 70s that they had red alert days where school children couldn’t even play outside and your lungs would burn. Inferior equipment? Hardly. The stuff available back then was as good and even better than the new stuff. Back then, amps made less gain, had a different eq (more mids and treble), and didn't have push button channel switching, or built in dsp effects, but they were far more robust, and louder. the capacitors and resistors were much higher value in terms of wattage, voltage, and Farad ratings. The potentiometers were better built, and tubes tended to last for decades, today tubes usually last 6 months to a year before crapping out. As far as the sounds jimi got, it's no secret to guitarists how he did it.

I’d guess there was zero thought to that. He routinely smashed his gear and that tele neck was slapped on with little choice in the moment.

He had to replace the neck of his strat before the concert, but there weren't any strat necks in stock. Jimi's crew took his guitar to a shop and they only had telecaster necks, so the guy at the shop had to modify the neck to let it fit on the strat body

Master-Murphy yes Jimi when you listen to all his main records....other left over stuff put together that he was working on....his live stuff....and really if i play guitar a nd have tried t o play Rythm guitar the way he could for his time he was just advanced as his lead ... and I want to say ..lets look at this too Jimi sang....He had to memorize lyrics and coordination with the guitar parts.... truly the. greatest guitar rock and roll player and you don't really know it till u c it all happen the way he is on stage ....its like he was from a n o t her planet!

@VloneThug Derek Kurt Cobain was a unique guitar player and underrated in some ways, but Jimi Hendrix was definitely superior rhythm player. Cobains chord shapes were a bit more basic and he utilized power chords. His writing really elevated that simplistic playing into something wholly original, but as far as skill, not on par with Hendrix.

Jimi probably has perfect pitch, or something near it cause that’s not something everyone can just do on first listen, that’s definitely some impressive shit

all the notes he's singing are on the pentatonic scale of whatever key he's playing. Still impressive but it's not like he's finding this note just from hearing it.

The recording of the New Year's Eve is outstanding. I recently went back and listened to that album on vinyl and really enjoyed it. If you think about it now in 2023, Jimi and Buddy would most likely be criticized for calling themselves "A Band of Gypsies." They were magical onstage that New Year's Eve.

Hendrix had good lyrics... Jim Morrison was a master poet. His words were even better than his vocalizations, in my opinion. However, Morrison is one of the few rock singers that had a baritone voice. He still rocked, even with the low voice. And what a band, Jim Morrison had! The Doors, unlike some groups... played at just the right level of energy and notes. The Doors did not ever have a bad song when Jim was alive that I have heard. Morrison Hotel was great with every song being exceptional. So were all the other albums.
