This was filled with an almost unendurable beauty. I met a few people who were there, and I'm acquainted with Juma Sultan, the guy who played African percussion on that gig (and also on Hendrix' performance on the Dick Cavett Show). Everyone said it was one of those indescribable moments where everything fell into place. And it pretty much puts everything in perspective. Here was the end of a tumultuous decade. The month before, men walked on the moon. Woodstock was all about peace, love, flowers, etc. Then Hendrix comes out and plays the most violent rendition of the national anthem anyone could have made. It reminded the audience what kind of reality awaited them when they came down from their high. And it admonished the whole nation for violating its covenant with God and its people. Then after a heavy romp with Purple Haze, he does a guitar improvisation, then this work of absolute beauty. And that was it. There was nothing more that could be done (he did Hey Joe as an encore, but,,,,). Nobody but Hendrix could have pulled that off.

@@DawoudKringle Yea that definitely makes sense, and for the crazy ending he could have chosen to do, like any other artist ending a festival, it was a pretty bold move to end it in a emotional ballot. Definitely an end to a era he knew! But hey, Hendrix was well know for changing the spectrum of how people see things, and I feel that's the whole point he was trying to get across, especially after being done with the commercialism of The Experience. And the Persona it had upon him! Which really wasn't who he really was.

There's a website called "Why Jimi Hendrix Played Last At Woodstock", but it goes on with some B.S. about Jimi's manager being greedy, YET IF YOU WATCH THE FILM ABOUT WOODSTOCK (made at the time), YOU SEE THE WHO ARGUING WITH JIMI THE NIGHT BEFORE ABOUT WHO'S GOING TO GO ON LAST. Both bands seem to be humble, saying to each other (but rather heatedly, at least on The Who's part): "We're not goin' on after you! We can't follow Jimi Hendrix!"; but I think it was really about the fact that the 2nd-last act would have the best time slot, because the last act would be on too late. Jimi made the best of all the delays (The Who also ran well over) by going on 9am Monday Morning, even though 90% of the 400,000 audience had left by then; but for those who stayed, what a magical time and place that must've been!
@tilesetter19533 жыл бұрын
I always heard that the Who went on when it was still dark and the sun came up as they were doing see me feel me (we're not gonna take it), so it could not have been 9 a.m. when they went on. If you watch the videos it looks dark out.

Might just be the greatest guitar riff ever imagined and recorded.. soulful, playful, and oh so powerfully representative of the human condition..powerful and soft

Gotta love all Jimis genious music. But listen extra careful to the details of this tune. One of his best live moments ever. It has got everything. Its AMAZING. ( Especially if you knows what he is doing on the guitar ).

I also thought Jimi was playing a Flying V for this song, but in this video, it looks like his Strat.
@v7337v3 жыл бұрын
He is using Strat.

It isn't because he is playing difficult licks on this tune. He is playing the right melody. It is just different as well as beautiful.
