This was an excellent concert until Iris Dement opened her mouth. Go back to Kansas City and stay there. There are indeed many quality singers in the US - too bad Iris isn't one of them.

Really wish they'd put anyone on stage in place of Iris DeMent, totally butchering Bell Bottomed Tear with that horrid warbling vibrato and mangling the lyrics.

I kind of get the references people are making to Iris DeMent sounding a bit goatish, but instead of hating it like others do I'm wondering how that unique sound is happening. It sounds like there might be some echo on her microphone to create the effect, but if that's her natural voice it's one I want to hear more of. I've never heard a voice like it

No one has ever trashed The Beautiful South like Iris Dement.

You really notice what a key part he is to this group in this special. I used to think that Paul just brought him along from the Housemartins out of friendship or something. Now you see that he has an important place in the South.
