I think every time I see Jimmy in these more long form interviews, that he is a real student of his craft, he seems like he really studies historical comedians and works hard at his stuff. He's not just a "funny guy who tells jokes" he really has studied a lot of historical comedians, and has a process. Yet he makes it look super natural and off the cuff.

3:30 this part here, there is a play in Ex Yugoslavia, a comedy called "Radovan Treći" (Radovan The Third) which stars Zoran Radmilović, one of the greats of Yugoslavian theather and films. The play was acted 299 times and two times was it filmed, once on its 250 show which was televised and put on VHS tapes and another time amateur shot on its 281. They say that every time the brilliance of Zoran Radmilović was different and every show was different because of how he acted. It's a banger filled with humor and breaking the show to complete laughtee of the public watching it.

I saw a really great performance by Louis CK where he made the entire 45 minute set seem like it was just one long rambling joke by using a massive callback at the end. Carr is hilarious, but Lennny Bruce was wrong about audiences being a genius. Look at Dennis Miller audiences. They laugh at any obscure reference just because it's the punchline. Comedianes and any entertainers can also do very well if they are mediocre, but good looking, or if the audience is generally drunk or stoned. No accounting for taste.
@GCKelloch
@GCKelloch 15 күн бұрын
@@tjones7823 I very much doubt a substantial portion of his US audience knew who the obscure references were in his stand-up routines. Given the average literacy level of US comedy audiences, it would be more ridiculous to assume they did. Granted, he was very well-educated and pretty witty in his day, and I liked him on the SNL Weekend Update, but he eventually lost any edge he may have had and has become nothing more than a sell-out Fox news puppet. I'm not a big fan of Carrot Top, but at least he wasn't a pretentious ass. For political humor, I think comedians like Bruce, Carlin, Pryer, Judah Friedlander, Seth Myers, Michelle Wolf or the late Michael Brooks have/had more going on than Miller ever did. You may be surprised to know I think Norm MacDonald was one of the GOATs.

@@tjones7823 Enjoy using that ridiculous strawman argument i.e. "If you're not a DM fan, you must only enjoy silly prop comedy". It's much more ridiculous to assume US comedy audiences even know who most of his obscure references were/are, or how the similes relate, if they even do relate.
