McEnroe wasn't the best on grass at the time. Connors beat him in the final at Queens only a couple of weeks earlier. So Connors beat him at Queens and then beat him at Wimbledon. Two grass tournaments in a row. Later that year Connors won the U.S open also, and regained the no.1 world ranking. And the next year Connors again beat McEnroe at Queens on grass.

I always thought that too, then after many years I've watched again this match and i understood that Connors was playing with a carbonium racket and Mcenroe with a wood one. Connors adapt first to new material and i think he got big advantage out of it.

@@colderbeer different strokes. for a lot of people federer's aggressive, attacking, *neo-baseline tennis is the most exciting. conners was mainly a baseliner. when it comes to exciting groundstroke players i think Nadal probably tops the heep for his ridiculous court coverage, tenacity, and signature banana passing shots. borg right up there, too. everyone has their own preferences.

Let's not forget that Connors cleaned Borg's clock in the 1978 US Open Final. Then beat Borg again a few months later in a tournament final in Buenes' Ares.

No question the game has changed a lot, but golf has changed far more. Equipment, the ball, course conditions make for a completely different game every 10 years.

The way they hit the ball and barely moved around the court they didn’t need towels, neither did they need any of energy enhancing foods and drinks…i would like to see them play the way modern players play without breaking a sweat! If they can still do it without need for towel - hats off then! But somehow i doubt it…lol

The Wimbledon surface in those days was a lot faster so serve and volley was still a viable way to win a match and the points were therefore shorter hence less sweating. Plus I can’t see any shadows so maybe it wasn’t a hot day. Then they made the surface slower to accommodate the European clay courters, and then racket/string technology changed which enable huge topspin which made it harder to volley so longer baseline exchanges became more common. Add to that the fitness of the modern player who runs for everything and the game is now more dynamic although I do miss the serve and volley routines.

Had chance of tennis during lockdown. I dusted my old Mac maxply. bloody heavy. Strings like cheeswire. Nicely made though. Mate let me have a modern racket lol. ....wot a difference I'm playing well now. Lol. How he played with the wooden I'll never know. But he sure did very well. I remember buying the max at my local sports shop for £19 quid I think. On offer. They were sold off cheap due to new modern stuff emerging at the time .....

Never forget Connors fighting spirit always gives Jimmy a chance even when the odds are stacked against him! Always remember Connors artistry of hitting the ball so flat with little room for error and no other player played the game like Jimmy! The best ever in my opinion and certainly the most exiting player ever! His will to win was superb!

@ Elmo Blatch. The interesting thing is that since the Connors-McEnroe '82 Wimbledon Men's Singles Final was played under overcast skies, there is no reason for McEnroe to have missed the overheads that he missed because there was no sun to make the overheads difficult.
