Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic talks about how he came to record his first solo instrumental album "Lifeboat" from being influenced by Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the Dixie Dregs in his first band at age 18, and how these early experiences made him happier as a sideman than the band leader and came to pay off later by playing with Aquarium Rescue Unit (the perfect "sideman" band) and even later on his solo album with Derek Trucks, Jeff Sipe, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge, and Greg Osby.

Jimmy went to my high school in Fayetteville, NC. he was always the most gracious. He came to my senior year talent show a year after he graduated and told me after my band played Stairway to Heaven that he enjoyed my improvised solo. I am sure that my performance wasn't even close up to snuff, but I still remember his kind words to this day. What a great guy and musician !

Another reason to like Jimmy Herring, Humility! If only more Human Beings recognized, based on their own insecurities, what it felt like to become/be an arsehole to others and make the decision quite simply, not to be!

Thank you, Michael! do you know Jimmy, btw? funny, just last Saturday i was at Terry Sandford Sr High(FTS) where he went to school - see my youtube "Terry Sandford Sr High - 20210123 SD 480p" - i was one year older, jimmy was always a super nice guy. i saw him later in his ARU band in Carrboro; saw him later in 2009 Raleigh guitar jazz concert; Jimmy is gentle and mindful - a joy to engage. we're not hang out pals but he mainly knows my sister who was his age at FTS; lol i recall one Thursday night when i was not playing my guitar but i was out partying, Jimmy was at the FTS talent show and i heard he was playing Carry On, My Wayward Son/kansas - obviously Jimmy did more w his guitar than i did with mine. i jam for fun, Jimmy jams on a whole different level!!! :P

@@fibo12358 Hi David, I'm in Sydney Australia, a world away. I've never been to the US, but have always been in awe of the rich musical History you have. I guess I'm surprised that someone so talented as Jimmy isn't the egotistical diva we see in the pop world. It's a meaningful lesson not lost on me. Cheers mate 👍🏼

@@michaelreis8266 lol that is so awesome, Michael :) - man, you are so right re the musical diva! i am no expert on the person of Jimmy Herring - i only spoke w him a couple of times in High School(we're from Fayetteville, NC), then 10 years later at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro(next to UNC Chapel Hill), then in 2009 at the New Universe guitar jazz festival here in Raleigh, but from day 1 but he's been delightful - as his interviews go so he is in person. i feel the same about Joe Satriani but have never met him personally; SO do you play, Michael? and, i would love to visit Sidney, see a Sydney Funnelweb(love biology) - AND to SEE but NOT TOUCH the Gimby Gimby(suicide plant)/lol - what a nightmare!, ==> and to hit some live music venues there and catch ur local talent; not to mention bands i grew up hearing - ACDC, INXS, Men at Work, etc, etc - and, ppl are ppl so i love meeting bands of yesteryear to see that they are[a]regular mortals, [b]often, later, they show special individual attention to their long time fan base, for example; (liked: Cheers mate); and i'll say as Jeff Bridges would be told ... Later, dude :);

@@fibo12358 I'm no expert on Jimmy either David, I guess I just except that his demeanor is as seen in clips on YT. I can generally tell when someone is acting. I do play guitar David, I was a later starter @19, but I was/am obsessed with it from day one, I had NO choice. I played in bands in my 20's (1990's) when Australia still had a musical landscape that catered to live music. Now it's all about noise control tp appease upwardly mobile yuppie tenants. If/when the covid situation calms down you should visit Australia, I know you'll love it, It's a beautiful place despite the incorrect belief that everything here can kill you. I mean some animals can, but if you respect their home nothing will happen. Having said that beware of cassowaries in breeding season, they are dinosaurs and capable of breaking your leg or disemboweling you with one strike! But they are up north. The only threats in Sydney are the high cost of living and cringey shirtless hipsters spilling their Lattes on you, lol. You'll be fine 😁👍 P.s: The Dude Abides 👌

@@michaelreis8266 LOL The Dude Abides! i am just NOW appreciating that movie, probably watched 40% of it via clips alone; "Is this your homework, Larry?" lol - look, Michael don't get me wrong, i would LOVE to visit Australia! beCAUSE of the cool animals - and the Southern Cross, and just to be there - I mean Great Barrier Reef, cool people, hippies lol - yah well we have Burning Man here :P - and, if I sang I'd wanna sing like Robert Plant, scarf and all lol; Cassowaries? goodness gracious there go some serious legs and claws on that joker! well, we have the largest rattlesnake here, probably a few hours southeast in the summer i could rattle up a few ;]. we have gators, Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and Coral Snakes; Mountain Lions, Bobcats, Bears, and even coyotes in this area that apparently will eat ur cat and dog lol :P. not to mention Miami the huge hub for the importation of exotic reptiles and the epidemic of constrictor snakes in FL lol; but yeah it'd be awesome to visit; i wish there was a website where we could register ID's and swap info then i click the map when i wanna visit and ur name comes up on it saying Fellow JH Fan, lives in Sydney - :P. ah, life is so busy, man. for your reference if you wanna store it away, and if u ever visit NC obviously hit me up dcparham gmail; 2 hrs from Wrightsvile Beach, not far from Kitty Hawk outer banks (wright brothers); it'd be an honor to house a fellow JK fan from the great down under. we'd hit some venues so ppl could hear ur cool accent eh :P. hey JH is an inspiration and i may never play like him but check out youtube Winter Songbird 2021 - just posted it yesterday; AND, you have any YT songs?

I got your autograph on a ticket stub at the sand bar in chatt, Tn, in 1992. You were ripping for col. Bruce. I always loved your style. The ticket is faded away but your signature is still there. Thanks for all you have given to us.

ur so right, VarMark - i'm nobody but happy to say i was a year older in high school with Jimmy; always nice (skinny red head kid with a mullet then lol); his Mom was a teacher there, i played guitar, too, but he obviously advanced massively; saw him later after seeing his ARU in Durham at Eno River Festival summer 1992; then in Carrboro "Cat's Cradle" i think; then later at 2009 jazz guitar festival - always congenial, humble, mindful, listens like he cares - met his wife, and children that night, too. John McLauglin was there; i got a photo of Jimmy with his brother Bob, and Joe. in fact i called out to Joe bc i thought it was Jimmy; he looked like him lol, long hair; anyway, for what it's worth i appreciate when someone appreciates humility :];

Cool interview. Can't believe it took me this long to stumble across it. I was up in Rush's studio one day, when they were tracking this - got thrown out because I fell asleep and started snoring (I'm a live sound/recording guy - studios put me right to sleep). Did get to tell Jimmy it was about goddamn time he got off his ass and did his own album. I was dropping Bobby Lee Rodgers to do some tracks (I was managing and doing sound/recording for the CodeTalkers at the time), we were on a home-time turnaround on one of our tours. For one of the premier shredders of our time, Jimmy is one of the most self effacing cats I've ever met. Took me a few listens to warm up to Lifeboat -but it is pure Jimmy...

Being the circus leader seems like it would suck most days. Don't even get me started on singers. In my experience, the only thing worse than having to look for a singer, is working with one. I too choose instrumental music for that reason. You may suffer a loss in fan count, but your sanity will thank you endlessly. BTW, I was at GIT with Jimmy and got to hang with him fairly often. He's every bit the great guy everybody thinks he is.

i didn't get that at all. remember Einstein's view of his own intellect? there's an element of humility, mortality, and even self-doubt about one's own talent that keeps them pushing towards excellence, which i believe Jimmy Herring is pretty close to that asymptote!
