Im from Central Illinois, lived 10 miles south of Charleston for 2 and a half decades, and the only reason these states still exist is because of the help we get from the state of Illinois. Because Chicago makes all the money, we get more tax money back than we put in

I went to EIU back in the day. Others have noted the location would be if you turn right / north from Lincoln Av onto 4th Street and just to the right. The current Jimmy John’s location was a Hardee’s burger franchise.

The original Jimmy John's was actually on the East side of 4th st. Just North of that little strip mall. It was barely more than a little shack, but man! did they sell a lot of sandwiches! My roommate was a delivery driver for them in '89 and '90, until he got called up for the National Guard for Desert Storm.

I went to EIU in the 70's. I used live behind Ike's (still there in the video, but I actually knew the owner, Ike) which was right across the road from Old Main. When I was there, that original Jimmy John's location had a Hardee's there instead.

That was not the first Jimmy Johns. That used to be a Hardee's. Jimmy Johns bought the property and moved there long after going nation wide. The first Location was behind those row of businesses before the current location. A tiny little shack, where only a hand full of people could fit inside. You can see a picture of it on their Wikipedia page.

You may not be political but Illinois definitely is, and that political climate and high taxes are the reason that several large corporations have left the state. Recently we've lost Boeing. Another thing about Illinois is that it is not friendly to business but is very friendly to litigation. As for EIU alumni, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys went to school there.

Firstly, the Jimmy John's in Charleston is NOT the original. THAT was located along the alley behind the small shopping centre across from Pemberton Hall. Jimmy Johns moved about 2010 to its current location.

I know I've seen this place on maps, but I've never thought much about it. It is nice to learn about a new place. It looks like a pleasant town without a great deal going on, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. As is usually the case with towns of its size and age, there are a few interesting buildings. It's been a few years since the last time I went on a road trip to the flat states. After the virus subsides, it might be worth taking some vacation and going there again. Since I've always lived in the west, surrounded by mountains, deserts, and ocean, the flat states are quite a novelty to me, and I enjoy visiting them. Naturally, I've explored a lot more of the western portion of the region (Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas) than I have places farther east. Maybe states like Illinois and its immediate neighbors should be next on my list. I've been speculating a bit on the situation in Illinois. I could be way off, of course, but I wonder if the state has run into a particularly thorny problem. Could it be stuck in a positive feedback loop, at least regarding the tax situation? I suspect that the taxes are high, in part, due to past obligations, such as pensions, but there could be other reasons. High taxes drive people away, but the state must still fund certain things, so as people leave, the budget becomes stressed, and this puts upward pressure on taxes, thereby causing more people to leave, and causing yet more upward pressure on taxes for those who remain. Naturally, this sort of cycle is unsustainable, but it is very difficult to break out of it, and Illinois isn't exactly known for competent government regardless of which party has power at any given time, so I don't think they have much of a chance. Illinois has the added problem of being surrounded by states that offer similar amenities and climate conditions; possibly aside from some cultural/political differences, there is nothing that makes Illinois stand out from its neighbors, whereas other high tax states, such as New Jersey and California, are attractive enough in many ways to make the high taxes and generally high cost of living worth it to many people. Even Chicago, which is certainly a draw, is so close to two other states that one doesn't have to live in Illinois to experience all of its benefits. I moved to California from a lower cost place, and I don't regret it at all even though I feel some financial pain, because there is so much here that I love. As nice as many of these towns in downstate Illinois are, I doubt they could replace all of the advantages that drew me to California. After I reach retirement age, I'm afraid that California could become unaffordable, so I might have to look for other options. Illinois, even with its high taxes, would be a bargain compared to California. I'm just afraid that the climate (specifically, the summer heat and humidity) would send me to an early grave. To those who know Illinois better than I do, am I on to something with my speculation about the tax and government situation, or am I completely off base? I certainly would like to understand why Illinois has ended up mired in this messy situation, while the neighboring states seem to be in better shape.

I just got done reading a few “lists” that show “the worst things about every state.” The worst thing for Illinois was the tax burden, saying that it was the worst state in the country for paying taxes. The same article said that the average annual household in Illinois pays just over $8,000 per year on taxes. Not sure how that compares to California, nor am I sure how the math adds up when you take the median household income into the equation for both states. I also looked up the “ states with the worst fiscal health.” Mostly every article I found had Illinois listed between the worst and the third worst in the country, as the state is in debt at a rate of $-52,000 for every tax payer. I’m not sure how Illinois got to be this way, but I do know that there are several former Illinois Governors that have spent time in the good ole penitentiary: www.google.com/amp/s/abc7chicago.com/amp/illinois-governors-in-jail-jailed-who-did-time-served/5944787/ As you mentioned, I’m also interested in hearing the responses of people who have lived in Illinois and have years of life experience of having Illinois taxes as being their reality. I’ve had some great comments on other videos regarding this, but there’s still so much more backstory to learn.
