What a opening lineup to kick things off with -JOS, Kenny Burrell, and dream horn front line of Clark Terry, Art Farmer, the homeboy James Moody, & flying home from the swing era & beyond: Mr. Illinois Jacquet. Cannon ball & his always underrated brother Nat delivering & exploring their jazz funk into the early 70s with help from the next generation of groove in the form of young George Duke.

The Cannonball, pacesetting and forever jovial. His work with Miles in general, and Kind of Blue specifically, will always be remembered as his defining best. Seeing him out front here, and performing his "al(to)chemy" is almost otherworldly, after listening to his music for more than fifty years. The visual freezes time, and adds another perspective to the man, the musician, the brother. Thanks for sharing his greatness with the world. May he rest in peace.👑 🎸🎵🎷

Wow! Thanks for sharing all this magnificent jazz. I just want to clarify a few things as a Cannonball Adderley historian. Cannonball was playing at the York Club in Los Angeles for a three week stent from 29-10-1971 through 13-11-1971. I think the recording is actually from October 27, 1972 during the "Newport Jazz Festival in Europe" tour. This concert was in Rotterdam as you correctly state. I have all the audio recordings and an additional video of the band playing Straight No Chaser from the original NPS broadcast. When I first got these recordings I was told the date was October 18, 1972, but Cannonball was in Warsaw Poland and I have all the recordings from that concert and none of these match. Here is the list of all the tunes the Quintet played at the Rotterdam performance(s). It isn't clear if they are two sets from a single concert or two different concerts. The stage is set up identically on the Straight No Chaser video as in your videos, suggesting the same concert with an intermission: 1. The Black Messiah (15:35) 2. Hummin' (11:44) 3. Walk Tall/The Scene (5:14) Intermission? 4. The Brakes (12:21) 5. Straight, No Chaser (4:13) 6. The Blooz/Oh Babe (6:58) No matter what the facts are, I really appreciate seeing these and all the other material. Thanks again. Doc Stewart

Wonderful rhythms and traditional/contemporary instrumentation. Love the funky organ sounds. The production is clean and unobtrusive, allowing the grooves and melodies to shine through. I am also impressed with the natural sounds of the percussion effects. As a musician, composer and orchestra leader (currently conducting a classical chamber orchestra) who has worked in a number of genres with producers such as Daniel Lanois and musicians like the late Billy Preston, I appreciated the quality of what you are presenting. Congratulations!

Mr. Bassman was feelin cannonballs solo. But man, I so wish he was out there longer. Hands down the best!!

I wish ol' Pete (my dear Father) were still alive for many reasons. But I know he would've seriously dug this- he'd have thought he'd hit the motherlode with the availability of KZfaq videos such as this !! He saw many jazz greats in his day at the old Red Hill Inn- Pennsauken, NJ. Many years later, (late 80s ?) we went to see Dave Brubeck at Glassboro State College (Glassboro, NJ). He'd learned about the show earlier that day, got home & asked me if I was interested. Sure... (I was into "progressive" rock- King Crimson, Yes, EL&P, Genesis. I always enjoyed rock with some jazz leanings & versa/vice-a. Musicianship & songwriting abilities above all else; so I am surely game for this....) we get there only to discover that it is a fundraising event. Tuxes & gowns permeate the place. Not good for us- he's a propane truck driver & serviceman. Still in his work duds, me in jeans & my Bernie Parent hockey jersey, right ? They had a heart. Dispite it being sold out & our not being dressed ? There were 2 cancelled tickets awaiting new customers like us. Thank you, God ! Because it was a night neither one of us would ever forget.... Ol' Mr. Brubeck had HIS SON performing on both upright & electric basses that night. By the second song, my Pops is requesting Take Five & Blue Rondo à la Turk, as we're only in, like, the 6th or 7th row. Not loudly, mind you. But subtle ,"5 !!"s !! & "Turk !!"s after applauses wound down. Blue Rondo à la Turk was covered by The Nice. (another "prog" band lead by Keith Emerson, albeit in 4/4 time versus the original 5/4 by the Brubeck Quartet). Again we were rewarded as they'd played them both before the night was over. On the way home, I remember Dad saying more than once, "the only thing that could have made this night better would've been Paul Desmond." That night was one of those things that were great because you knew how great the night actually was, as we were doing it & that we would both have that endearing memory for the remainder of our days on Earth. If one is able to revisit life's experiences after having expired, in Heaven; this night is truly a given- to be able to do it again. And we'd actually thought at one point that we'd might have driven, one way, 45 minutes for nothing, once we'd seen all those tuxedos & gowns filing into the building. Good, no- GREAT THING- we pressed on like we did !! Love you, Dad !! If some of what I said earlier is true, (about revisiting life's treasured moments in the afterlife...) then surely ol' Pete is at a Count or Duke show at the Red Hill Inn- right about now....😇

It's rare that I hear Jimmy Smith playing with such a crunchy tone as we hear in this clip. Overdriven and aggressive, and I think it suits the piece really well.

Cat Anderson wailing on that trumpet tossing in a line of “Shine on harvest Moon” in Perdido. Did I hear that right? Played with the Duke and it shows. Lost both his parents at 4 years old and learned to play trumpet in an orphanage.

One of the first Jazz albums I bought as a teen was with this setting of the Cannonball Adderly Quintet. Loved it. Was also surprised that this was George Duke before he joined Frank Zappa, since I was also a Zappa fan.

While most people play the bass like they’re trying to hold it up and prevent it from crushing them, Mingus always looked like he was a giant come to rest his arms on the upright and the fingers moved automatically. What a solid pair of hands
