In this video I will regrow rosemary that I purchased from the grocery store. Rosemary is a beautiful and delicious herb that we can easily propagate and regrow from cuttings. Rosemary makes an excellent counter top plant, and re-growing it is a great way to always have fresh herbs in your kitchen! I demonstrate how we can grow rosemary indoors with hydroponics and in soil. It could not be easier to grow rosemary from cuttings, and it's an excellent project for a beginner gardener!

The reason the roots roted and turned black is most likely because rosmary dosnt need/likes lots of water once its rooted! It preffers semi dry soil!

Yes, it's a mediterranean plant actually growing in dry or even sandy soil. I think of you grow them in that water reservoir you might want to harvest for cooking first and then regrow from small stems again, repeating the process.

I’ve managed to kill at least 4 Rosemary plants which I bought from my local grocery store, alive & healthy, growing in a small pot of soil. After I bought my latest I went on KZfaq 😉 & found lots of tutorials for growing Rosemaries. I found out that it is native to the Mediterranean shores found on cliffs in sandy(fast draining)soil under hot dry weather & ocean mist. So, about halfway thru THIS video I’m wondering “I thought Rosemary didn’t like wet roots, so how is he gonna avoid root rot?”

I was wondering the same thing. Anytime I buy Rosemary and put it in a pot, it dies. Even when I put it in a clay pot and don't really water it but have a humidifier right by it, it still dies. But the plant that I put outside in our sandy/red dirt, it's thriving even in the cold temperatures. When I started watching this video, my first thought was that plant is going to die of root rot. Lol I keep hoping that I'm going to find a video of someone that made their Rosemary survive in hydroponics. I doubt it though.

The thing that causes root rot isn't the water itself- it's the soil. If the soil stays too wet, it will get compacted and suffocate the roots, which opens the door for infection. Plants grown in water don't usually have this problem, but sometimes infection does happen

Numerous herbs and plants like Pathos can live and thrive in just water while establishing a plentiful, sturdy root system. As mentioned in this video, trim off at least an inch of leaves from the stem. Foliage in water is the biggest culprit in developing root rot. Also, change the water out every 3 days. Overtime, oxygen levels will deplete if not changed. I like to use bottled spring water during propagation because it’s free of chemicals in tap water that may affect roots at this early and vulnerable phase.

Trimming the top of the plant is such a great trip! I did not know that! Thank you! Also, the roots looked pristine when you first took them out of the white jars. I'm wondering if the roots went bad because the water hadn't been changed for weeks while you were away.

With most plants, they'll slowly drink up the water and the roots would still be a healthy white, even after long periods of time. And thats how kratky hydroponics works. With rosemary in particular though, its a dry climate plant that doesnt love excess water. Ive tried this a few additional times and could never get them to continue growing in hydroponic environments, even though they start so well. Seems soil is key for this plant

Thank you for this informative video! I had been wondering if those fresh Rosemary cutting in the grocery store could root. I live in a rural mountain area where there are no rosemary plants for sale. I ordered some live ones off Amazon a few weeks ago, but they all arrived dead. 😔 I did not want to try growing from seed. So I will go ahead and get some of the fresh sprigs for cooking from my local market and when they root, I'll be planting them in some succulent soil and see what happens. At least I know that the store herbs can root now! That is so cool! Thank you again! 🙂

Lol you're leaving out the part about how growing rosemary from seed teaches you Zen levels of patience. First you gotta wait longer than your used to by like 3x-7x longer for them to sprout. Then you gotta wait like a full week or 2 for the first true leaves to to form, then you gotta wait another 2 weeks for the second set of true leaves to form. I can't speak any further than that because that's the stage my plants are at right now. I can confirm I've tried from cutting from the store 4 different times and they just rotted away every time though so seed is the way to go for me I guess.

They said you could Cut the stems then place them into water to cut it again. Otherwise Yeah be kind of hard to cut it under water while still growing in the garden. My guess about the roots are that you first had it in jars painted white which would have made it 'light' inside the jar. The foil though, created a darker invironment and if it were placed in a sunny area, the water also became too hot and increased the chance for bacteria to grow.

I successfully grew a whole herb garden thanks to your instructions! My mint is going bonkers and will need repotting soon because it's pushing leca out of the cup and I'm having to trim back "underground" branches that grow in all directions (including towards the roots!) every couple days. I'm guessing I'll have to cut open the net cup when up-potting. Any tips on an easy way to remove overgrown plants in net cup without causing too much damage to the root system?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 3 жыл бұрын
Love to hear you’re having success! Mint definitely grows fast. If you’re going to keep going with hydroponics, I would just move the net cup/plant to a bigger reservoir. I’ve never really had a need for a bigger net cup. If you want to try transplanting into some soil, cutting the net cup is probably the way to go. I’ve pulled plants out of net cups before- some roots will rip off, but if you’re able to keep 75% or more of them, the plant typically recovers fine in my experience. Good luck! Would love to hear how it turns out

I would have changed the reservoir at the first signs of plant distress. It’s possible the ph was out of line, or there was something funky in the tap water somehow that day. Because I was leaving the plant for 2 weeks, I moved it from its original spot to a place with less light so it hopefully wouldn’t dry out before I made it back. I’m assuming this change contributed to shocking the plant.

I bought a similar package which had the roots and a tiny bit of dirt still attached. This was my third attempt, and again the rosemary died. This time, I gave the rosemary a few days to acclimate to being warmer and gave it just a tiny bit of water. Then I put it in potting soil, but not in direct sunlight. I gradually introduced it to more and more sunlight. I probably over-waterd the soil, and I have no idea about the soil's pH. The leaves started curling up and turning a dark gray-green, so I suspect root rot. I felt the soil, and find that even after two days since I last watered it, the soil is still very moist. So maybe try again using the soil I bought for my son's cactus? Any ideas?

Soil Requirements for Rosemary Plant **Ideal Soil for Rosemary:** - **Well-Draining Soil:** Rosemary thrives in soil that drains well. Sandy or loamy soil types are ideal as they prevent water from stagnating, which can cause root rot. - **Slightly Acidic to Neutral pH:** The optimal pH for rosemary is between 6.0 and 7.0. Soil that is too acidic or too alkaline can hinder the plant's growth. - **Nutrient-Rich Soil:** While rosemary does not require overly rich soil, it benefits from soil with good fertility. You can amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to enhance its nutrient content. **Soil Conditions in Nature:** - **Mediterranean Climate:** In its native habitat, rosemary is found in the Mediterranean region, where the soil is often sandy or rocky with excellent drainage. - **Dry, Sunny Slopes:** Rosemary naturally grows on dry, sunny slopes with minimal organic matter. This type of environment mimics the well-draining conditions that rosemary prefers. ### Recommendations: - **Garden Soil Mix:** For potted rosemary or garden beds, you can use a mix of garden soil, sand, and compost to ensure proper drainage and fertility. - **Container Planting:** If planting in a container, ensure it has drainage holes and use a high-quality potting mix combined with sand or perlite. By providing these soil conditions, you can help your rosemary plant flourish, whether indoors or outdoors.

I believe I over filled the reservoir and drowned the plant, then the roots went black as the plant died. It’s best to leave an inch or so of roots exposed to air to help the plant breathe. I overdid it, trying to ensure the plant wouldn’t dry out while I was away on vacation

I think in many cases planting in soil is way safer for plant while we are not able to look after frequently. My rosemary plant is living without any help or watering close to higher plants and trees. I think rosemary needs a little bit of shady place.
