Hi I’m the uke in the video.thank you for the nice comments. I unfortunately don’t do aikido Just jiu jitsu and martial arts from a very young age but I was always taught how important falling the right way is. And we practiced this demo A LOT and it’s easy when you have a good partner 😂

Its becoming way more normalized now, as it should be. You've got feet whether youre in the gi or not, learn to protect them. All fair game.

@Scottierolls within the sport. Check out all the competitions that allow heel hooks in the gi. Usually It's reserved for upper belts because of how dangerous they are but still, they're there. As the sport transitions to less and less gi, alot of those no-gi and wrestling techniques are being recognized as vital to the game. As I said, you still have feet, why ignore them just because you have the gi on? Originally everyone ignored the feet. Nowadays it's all fair game.

if a student leaves just because they got the black belt then they weren't dedicated enough to the art to earn that belt in the first place. No true black belt trains just to receive that belt. Most who receive that prestigious award have put their body on the line for close to a decade, and have spent countless hours on the mat honing their skills. This thing is hard, and it takes a true love for the skill to get a black belt. You don't pour hours of your life onto the mats just to have a different colored piece of wool put around your waist. With that being said, by the time someone is even a purple belt, they have spent quite some time on the mat. Who knows what type of personal issues have come and gone in that time. People move, get injured, get promoted at work, get married, have kids. Plenty of things get in the way of training consistently for 10 years straight. Therefore, for some it very well might take 14 years just to get a brown belt. Comparing it to the difficulty of other disciplines and skills is a waste of time, and diminishes the difficulty and complexity of Jiu Jitsu. There is a shitload to learn in Jiu Jitsu, and the difference between someone who has trained 10 years compared to the individual who has trained 2 years is astounding. Sure, it takes over a decade to become a surgeon, but why does that matter? It takes over a decade to become anything close to a master in Jiu Jitsu. Hence the belt system that awards those who put real time and dedication into the art. This isn't karate, which awards 10 year olds with black belts. If someone is in it just for the recognition, they aren't in it for the right reasons and, as you said, wont last once they get promoted. We see this clearly with the very first promotion, the blue belt. 90% of blues dont reach purple.

Appalling? How do you know the student didn't take time off during that span? Maybe the student was only going 1-2 days a week, etc. There are many reasons why it takes some longer than others. 5-7 yrs is more than enough for anyone to become a BB? Your subjective opinions don't matter. Instructors use different criteria to determine who is honored with the BB: competition, attendance, hitting the techniques shown in class, keeping up with the higher belts while sparring, etc. No, not everyone deserves a BB in 5-7 yrs. Some might take 10 yrs, 12 yrs or longer. Some may never get it. Nobody deserves anything. You have to earn it. Unfortunately, too many martial arts are watered down to appease their students with belts being given out too liberally. You have no clue why or what circumstances this student had to wait this long for his brown belt.

Everyone’s progress and journey is different. Wild to generalize that if someone has been doing BJJ for 5-7 years they should be awarded a black belt. Are there people that have achieved a black belt in that time span? Absolutely, and they are probably exceptional and/or the exception. And I agree with you, what an inspiring journey.

@benzaccaria6580 Thanks for taking the time to reply. In reality, I would risk saying 100% of students start with the goal of becoming a blackbelt, since that is what "mastery" equates to. With time, obviously, they realized the title equates to the skill set, not the color. Also, no student owes allegiance to their teacher. Being a blackbelt gives them autonomy. Even then, you still have scumbags who want to make money on their former students' gym. Ridiculous. BJJ is just a sport, but some treat it like a cult, of which you have to be a member forever. The antidote is to keep them below BB for as long as possible. This is no secret. Thirdly, it is useful to compare other disciplines because you can gage if it is reasonable. If in 5 years you can become a lawyer, is it really reasonable to take 14 to become a BB? Obviously not. And please don't tell me you actually believe becoming a doctor or lawer is less complex than a BB. You can be an absolute idiot and still get a BB, and the examples are abundant (NOT saying BB are dumb, just to be clear).The same standard applies to doctors,architectss, trades, etc. The reason is because "masters" would not make money. Even if it took 7, it's still reasonable. As you mentioned, life gets in the way, stretching the time, sure. 14 years is still more than sufficient to reach BB, if dedication is there. Say he missed 6, he still had 8 on the mats. C'mon bro, that is crazy.

@user-cd6kn9pf5f Helio Gracie himself, in video, said 5 years is enough. It wasn't a business then. It was a set of skills you needed to know. If the ambassador says that, everyone else should take a few seconds to reflect on their requirements for a BB.
