What are your thoughts on grappling dummies?
@a-ian-lim

Hey, can you make a video on your thoughts on using grappling dummies in general? I’m a white belt, been doing BJJ for 5 months, and gone through about 55 classes, watched hours upon hours of youtube videos, and 16 hours of actual drill time with techniques outside of class on my own. I built my own grappling dummy with ¾ Inch PVC and springs, plastic head, feet and hands. I think it’s very beneficial for anyone who is trying to learn a new skill (specific move) and has zero experience with it…. Like me. My strategy is to learn the technique in class (armbars, triangle chokes….) drill it in class, then after class drill it with friends, watch videos online, and get reps in with my dummy. I like to drill on my dummy, watch videos on the technique I’m practicing while I’m drilling. Then the next day drill the same technique with my friends. Mixing between friends and the dummy, allows me more time to train at my pace… and helps reduce the physical damage on my training buddies. Once I get the gross motor movements familiar with a technique, there comes a point when a dummy provides diminishing returns. At that point, you will have to train with a real opponent with increasingly difficult resistance. I have almost gotten to that point on some moves… I’ve done about 1 to 1.5k reps on armbars on my dummy, and I think I’m about ½ to the point where I should move on to different moves. 1500 reps may not seem like a lot, but consider this, when you’re in class… you have the opportunity to train that move maybe 20-40 reps if you and your partner are familiar with the move. It could be as little as 1-10 times if you guys are new.

This one is way too expensive if you can afford it great, but i cant justify spending that much on this.

Everyone asks me about training with dummies. 1. Let me drill an armbar or guillotine on you properly, 100reps, every day. For 6 months. 2. Most people forget what they did after class. I’ve seen my wife improve just by repping what she learned in her class 3. Would you train boxing without a punching bag? That is essentially what a grappling dummy is, allows you to work proper technique without having to worry about injuring your partner. 4. When you become more advance, finding other advance guys to train is slim. Dummies allow you to focus on your current goal so you can attempt to drill on your partners on live rolls. In the end, it’s a tool, if you actually use often and correctly you will get benefits from it

Great info. Only thing I will say is buying it unfilled is significantly cheaper and they give very specific instructions on how to stuff it so that it will function the way it is intended.

Awesome breakdown and information for anyone looking for these as an option when you are very limited with partners or time with job shifts. I have a 200# leather sand filled, but it is a pain to use. This looks phenomenal. I’ll be getting some for the dojo and our home. Oss 🙏🏼

Hey man 200lbs is way to heavy for a dummy. Try cutting it down by 125lbs. Wether the weight is 200 or 75 lbs, it still is going to be unrealistic You want to be training gross motor movements when doing a specific technique, not spending all your energy moving an unrealistic weight (dead weight) in a work out.

Very good. I have a 6f dummy weighing 90kg . I absolutely love it. i run stairs with it on my back and do throws take downs on it and ground and pound at the top of running stairs. I enjoy moving my and lifting my dummy it's definitely got me grappling stronger 💪. One big + is I can practice my judo throws and take downs and full power 😅 and not hurt ny training parnters

Hi Chasen. Thank you for this excellent review. As with all of your videos, very informative and well-produced. A quick follow-up question... Which size dummy did you use and what would you recommend for someone 5-9? Thank you 🙏

I used the cloth one at class from time to time and I 100% hate it. It doesn't help me learn properly. I like the idea of this one much more than the ones I've used.

Hey thanks for the good information. I'm 5 foot 10 inches 180lbs and I am curious about the size of the dummy. This company makes an XL now. Do you have any thoughts on the size of the 2.0? Would you have a recommendation for which size someone my size should purchase.

Do you think I’d be able to drill take down entries, throws and trips with this if I keep it balanced with my arms?

Possibly. The one I used is about 50lbs. There is a bigger one with more weight. So you most likley could lift up yourself!
